플래퍼의 상징과 문화적 의미

Abstract

1920년대는 미국 역사상 가장 많은 변화가 발생한 시기였고 기계화, 대중화, 소비사회 등 현대 미국 사회의 특성을 형성하고 뚜렷하게 보여준 시기였다. 전후 경제적 번영으로 인한 물질적 풍요 속에 사람들의 의식과 생활 양식, 사회문화 전반에 걸쳐 많은 변화가 발생하였다. 자동차 시대의 도래와 개인주의, 쾌락주의의 만연, 물질 만능의 풍조, 전통적인 가치관의 붕괴와 성적인 개방, 여성과 젊은 세대의 등장, 대중 매체를 통해 등장한 연예계나 스포츠 스타 등 모든 것이 이 시기에 시작되었다. 전후 젊은 세대들의 급부상과 경제 번영으로 인한 소비 사회의 도래는 도덕과 절약 정신으로 대표되던 전통적 가치와 현대성(modernity) 사이의 긴장이 한꺼번에 드러나게 했다. 전쟁이라는 역사적 단절은 짧은 시간동안 사회의 가치관을 바꾸어놓았고 특히 젊은 세대를 중심으로 가치관이나 도덕관에 영향을 주었다. 플래퍼는 일련의 변화들을 받아들이고 형성해 나간 과정의 중심에 있었다. 본고에서는 1920년대 미국 사회의 빈번한 논쟁거리였던 플래퍼를 통해서 현대 미국사회의 변화를 살펴보려고 한다. 플래퍼가 상징하고 의미하는 바는 과연 무엇인가? 이에 대한 답을 찾기 위해서 2장에서는 플래퍼가 등장하게 된 역사적 조건, 3장에서는 대중 매체를 통해 드러나는 플래퍼들의 이미지, 4장에서는 플래퍼에 대한 연구와 논의를 분석하고 각 논의의 의의와 한계를 통해 미국 역사에서 플래퍼가 가지는 진정한 의미를 살펴보려 한다. 그들은 젊은 여성이라는 사회적 소수 세력임에도 불구하고 문화 현상에 영향을 주었으며 대공황 전까지 거의 10년간 사회 이슈의 중심에 있었다. 플래퍼의 문화를 제대로 분석하는 것은 1920년대의 미국 사회에 대한 이해를 도모할 수 있는 길이 될 수 있다. 플래퍼야말로 당대의 변화를 가장 집약적으로 나타내는 존재이기 때문이다. 플래퍼가 등장할 수 있었던 역사적인 조건은 한가지 사건으로는 설명될 수 없다. 많은 학자들이 사회 변화의 원인으로 전쟁(제 1차 세계대전)을 지목하고 있지만 전쟁 전 약 2세기에 걸쳐서 사회는 꾸준히 변화해왔다. 본고에서는 이와 같은 사회의 변화를 여성상의 변화에 맞추어 살펴볼 예정이다. 한 사회에서 나타나는 여성의 이미지는 사회 도덕의 문화적 생산물이라는 관점에서 볼 때, 또한 여성사의 시각은 아니라 하더라도 플래퍼 분석에서 여성관의 변화는 필수적으로 언급되어야하므로 여성상의 변화를 살펴보는 것은 필수적이다. 그와 동시에 점진적으로 변해오던 여성상이 이 시기에 갑자기 극단적으로 변한 이유를 당시의 사회적 제반 상황에서 찾고자 한다. 이러한 역사적 변화 속에서 등장한 플래퍼는 각종 매체를 통해 다양한 모습으로 그려졌다. 신문과 잡지에는 그들의 패션에 대한 정보성 기사부터 탈전통적 사고방식과 자유로운 행동에 대한 비난의 기사까지 다양한 기사가 실렸다. 광고업자들에게 플래퍼는 사람들의 구매행위에 영향을 주는 훌륭한 모델이었다. 소설이나 영화 속에서도 주인공들은 플래퍼의 모습을 하고 있었다. 그 속에서 플래퍼들은 전통적인 여성관에서 현저히 벗어나는 자유롭고 역동적인, 때로는 물질주의적인 이미지로 표현되었다. 플래퍼들의 이미지는 언론이나 학계로부터 뜨거운 관심을 받게 되었고 이들의 이미지에서 드러나는 플래퍼의 특성은 저마다 다르게 해석되었다. 긍정적으로는 현대사회의 상징이자 개혁적인 존재로서, 부정적으로는 도덕적 일탈자들이자 사회적으로 무의미한 존재로서 여겨졌다. 본고에서는 신세대로서, 또한 소비 문화와 대중 문화의 중심으로서 플래퍼를 현대의 상징이며 미국 역사에서 변화를 형성했던 긍정적인 세력으로 평가하고자 한다. 플래퍼들은 1920년대가 끝나갈 무렵 대공황과 함께 사라졌지만 그들이 진행시켰던 변화는 사라지지 않았다 플래퍼들의 존재는 2차 대전 이후에 생겨난 여성의 또 한번의 사회진출과 나아가 1960년대에 젊은 세대의 저항문화가 의미하는 다양한 문화적 세력의 토대로서의 가치를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.;1920s in American History is the era of changes during which various features of modern American society such as mechanization, popularization and consumerization etc. had been formed. After the World War I, the advent of the auto-ages, prevailing individualism, materialism, conventional disciplines breaking down, sexual openness, female and young generation appearing as independent subjects of society, stars following mass media's expansion were the factors representing this period and they all originated in it. The young people rapidly extended their power over the society. The national consumption expanding considerably during that time attributed to this fact. Accordingly the conflicts concealed between modernity and conventional disciplines representing diligence and frugality were growing severe. War, a historical interruption, swayed social standards so intensely in a short time and mostly affected the young generation. Flappers, as a core of the young generation, fostered and took in the changes actively. I try to show and define the transformations in modern American society through reviewing "Flapper" which was the most controversial phenomenon in the 1920s. What does Flapper stand for? To answer this question, I examine the historical background in Chapter 2 and Flapper's image appearing in mass medias in Chapter 3. Finally in Chapter 4, reviewing various debates and studies about Flappers, I try to analyze the meanings and limitations each of them. It can be helpful looking into the true meaning of Flapper. Flappers influenced many cultural phenomena and brought various social issues and they, themselves were the major issue of the time. They are integrating the characteristics of 1920s American society, consequently understanding Flappers and analyzing their behaviors signify understanding the contemporary society. Many scholars point out the World War I as a cause of 1920s social changes. However these kinds of changes had been made gradually but constantly for two preceding centuries. This paper rather focus on women's social status change to examine the cause. Also focus on the contemporary circumstances to figure out which factor accelerated the gradual transformation of the woman's status for two preceding centuries and made abrupt changes in 1920s America. Flappers turning up through a maze of historical changes were reflected as various images at that time. Newspapers and magazines were busy publishing articles about Flappers. Some were about Flapper's fashions and lifestyles solely to deliver information about Flappers to their subscribers. The others introduced the Flappers' describing their self-indulgence and misbehaviors, naturally criticizing Flappers. However, for advertisement business, Flapper was a perfect model of a modern woman. Flapper often appears on novels and movies too. They were described as liberal, active and rather materialized individuals who were free from social conventions. The characteristics of their image have been interpreted diversely. Some regarded Flapper positively as a symbol of modern society and cultural pioneer. Conversely some others considered Flappers as a radical and meaningless figure. I examine Flapper as a new generation at that time and a center of contemporary pop culture. Through this we can reach the conclusion that Flapper has performed active and positive role as a symbol of modern American society. Even though Flappers had vanished with Great Depression late 1920s, their influence remains still. Flapper established the foundation of various social changes and movements coming later including the second large entry of women into the economic sphere after the World War Ⅱ and 1960s' resistance movements.
