Abstract
허쉬(E.D. The American identity used to be defined in accordance with the theory of the 'melting pot' or 'salada bowl.' However, such single theory cannot account for the whole picture of American society. This paper presumes that an identity of a society is a product from the continuous interactions and challenges. Reflected on this presumption, the canon controversy is the microcosm, that illustrates how the identity of American society has been formulated through the struggles on what to teach. This paper is intended to explore on how the canon controversy was formulated and developed as a discourse. In Chapter 2, this paper will discuss about the emergence of new forces, who attempted to define the American society in other ways than the one before, and the development of multiculturalism and multicultural education. Chapter 3 looks on the disapproving reactions against the multiculturalism movements and analyzes on how the conservative, those who wished to adhere the conventional value and canon that time, were constructed. Two contrasting sides respectively dealt in Chapter 2 and 3 are put together in Chapter 4 to reveal how these two forces interacted each other and resulted a practical discourse in the field of the literature education of English or the Western civilization education in a wider scope of sense. Multiculturalism was resulted from the progressive movement at societal level in 1960-70. College students were the agents of the progressive movement. Considering their colleges as the miniature of the real society, the students searched for alternatives such as 'free university' to the current unjust address of colleges at that time. They criticized the unjust practices within campus such as that authoritarian oppression from the headquarter of college were pervasive, the curriculum lacked the autonomy, and the practice of racial discrimination in society were represented within campus. Their struggle did not stop at colleges. Their interest furthered to the society as promoting the rights of minority and colored people and fighting against the unjust of society like the Vietnam war. Such activism was spreaded into other parts of society from colleges and finally reshaped as one notion in 1970s: multiculturalism induced to create variable multicultural courses such as studies on African, African American , minority, and women. Meanwhile, those conservative added harsh voices on society and colleges that were influenced by the multiculturalism. Allan Bloom and E.D.Hirsch ware awakened and accelerated the conservative criticism. Bloom lamented about the future of American society claiming students involved in the multicultural education were destroying the American society. Other conservative scholar who joined the ride with Bloom emphasized the homogeneity of American culture and proclaimed the superiority of Western civilization. Parading the higher education background, those critics on multiculturalism put cultures and academics on the priority over the ideational orientation. They considered the multiculturalist as those with the limited view on society as confining the constituent of identity only to races, people, or genders and over-emphasizing differences brought by them. They viewed the multiculturalism would deepen the previous conflict system and devide the culture within the U.S. At the long run, the multiculturalsim was considered to breed new form of racism. The canon controversy evidences back the balanced maturity of two parties: the conservative and the progressive. One of good examples that illustrate the balance between the conservative and the progressive is the controversy over removing the required 'Western Civilization' course and substituting it with alternatives CIV at the Stanford University. Admittedly, Canon controversy started from the dispute over what to read between Canonists and Anti-Canonists in English literature. However, it can be viewed as that between the conservative and the multiculturalists. Canon becomes the topic for such controversy not because it is the object of learning but because it functions to reproduce the social ideas and values. The political aspects of canon gets revealed through the canonization process. Canonization is the process of choice and exclusion. What survived the process of choice and exclusion and have the honor to be named as canon are the thoughts, and ideas of dead white males from the Western civilization. After all, non Western-civilization, women, minority are the objects to oppress by the canon. Those from the multicultural background disapprove the canon and request to put a limelight on their literature. Still, appreciating new literatures than the conventional canons, Anti-Canonists could not avoid the process of choice, neither. The process of choice are criticized as to have the oppressive factor in the conventional canonization. Another critic that the multiculturalists could not escape from is that they manipulated racial and gender issues to achieve their political power. It is exactly same with the logics employed by the conservative. Eventually, there appeared some canons that only delivered only African or minority literature and these cases presented another problem with new canonization, the counter discrimination against white. However, instead of as signs of staggering identity of American society, the critics on the Anti-Canonist could be considered as part of another process to search new version of multiculturalism and conservativism in the continuum of challenges.
