Herman Melville의 Billy Budd 연구

Abstract

Melville은 社會속의 人間의 存在樣式과 社會와 個人과의 關係에 대해 관심을 가지고 있었다. 그 결과 작가 자신의 경험과 깊은 문제파악은 Billy Budd라는 圓熟한 中篇小說을 낳게 하였다. 그 構造的인 矛盾이 현저하게 드러나지 않았던 19세기 美國社會에는 超絶的 理想主義者들의 樂觀主義的인 世界觀이 지배적이었다. 그러나 Melville은 폭넓은 經驗과 날카로운 洞察力으로 社會의 어두운 現實을 直視하였다. 그리하여 그는 그의 전 작품을 통하여 現實의 음폐된 심층을 밝혀 내고자 하였다. 본 논문의 目的은 그것이 비록 中篇이기는 하지만 Melville 藝術의 綜合이라 할 수 있는 Billy Budd에서 주인공 Billy의 참을 통하여 作家가 전달하고자 하는 메시지가 무엇인가를 살펴 보는데 있다. 商船 Rights-of-Man호에서 戰艦 Bellipotent호로 徵發되므로써 Billy는 Claggart와 대면하는 계기를 갖게 된다. 19세기 美國社會의 構造的인 惡은 Claggart의 邪惡함을 통해 象徵的으로 제시되고 있다. 이를 認識하게 되자 Billy는 비로소 現實에 눈뜨게 된다. 그리하여 그는 二元論的인 世界觀에 안주해 現實을 固守하는 Vere선장과 달리 이에서 더 나아가 惡이 존재하게끔 하는 社會의 構造的인 矛盾에 대결하게 된다. Moby Dick에서는 二元論的인 世界觀을 갖는 個人意識이 유효한 세계였다. 그러나 Billy Budd에서는 世界의 二重性을 認識한 후 構造的인 社會惡에 대항해 싸우는 Billy의 행동만이 바람직한 것으로 제시되고 있다. 즉 Melville은 이렇게 하면 Billy처럼 본인 자신은 죽어야 하지만 일반 凡人들에게 삶의 reality와 사람이 가야할 길을 보여주는 계기가 된다는 것을 말하고 있다고 생각된다.;Melville had a keen Concern on the problems of relationship among social members and relation between social members and the society. His interest in the problems, helped by his wide experiences and his sharp insight, produced a mature work, Billy Budd. Its social structural contradictions were not revealed yet in American society in 19th century. Therefore optimistic world view of the Transcendental Idealists prevailed over the country. But Melville could not help but see the dark reality of the time. Therefore he attempted to expose the negative hidden reality through his works. In this study on Billy Budd I intend to grasp Melville's message which the author tried to tell the reader through Billy's life. Taken by force from the merchantship Rights-of-Man to the H.M.S. Bellipotent, Billy came to meet Claggart. Melville presented symbolically the social structural vice of the 19th century America through Claggart's wickedness. So Billy became to understand and perceive the vice in reality. In spite of his dualistic world view, Captain Vere slicked to the present social structure and social order. But Billy attempted to confront the social structural contradiction. In Moby Dick Melville dealt with the validity of Individual awareness of dualistic world view. But in Billy Budd Melville made Billy confront the social structural vice. And it seems to no that the author tried to convey his message by killing Billy. Because Melville apparently believed that Billy is death would bring the common people realize the reality and the meaning of Billy's death.
