ULYSSES에 나타난 追求의 主題에 관한 硏究

Abstract

James Joyce의 Ulysses(1922)는 古代神話 Odyssey의 구조를 사용하여 現代의 都市라는 時間的 空間的 개념을 연결시키고 있다. 여기서 Joyce는 Homer의 作品을 그대로 모방하는 것이 아니라, 자신의 神話를 구축하는 디딤돌로 삼고 있다. Ulysses를 神話的 구조로 쓴 작가의 의도는 불모의 현대 사회에 과거 神話의 가치를 대비시킴으로써 현대의 황폐성을 주장하며, 동시에 역설적으로 현대에 과거와 같은 삶의 의미를 부여하는데 있다. 즉 人間性을 상실한 황무지와 같은 현대에서 Ulysses는 일종의 神話의 文學的 祭式 기능을 가지고서 인간과 사회 간의 동일성 ( identity )을 조장하며 사회 결속을 시도한다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 Joyce의 Ulysses에 가장 크게 내재하는 神話的 요소는 追求의 과정이다. 3人의 등장인물들은 Joyce가 특별히 설정한 1904년 6월 16일 마비의 중심 Dublin에서 각기 다른 양상으로 추구를 진행에 나간다. 현대의 왜소한 주인공들인 이들의 추구를 통해 Joyce는 時空的 한계를 뛰어넘어 영원히 계속되는 신화의 개념을 확립하고자 한다. 물론 이들에게는 과거와 같은 安住나 결말이 주어지지 않는다. 現代의 신화 Ulysses에는 오로지 추구의 과정만 허용되기 때문이다. 그러나 필자는 결말이 주어지지 않는 등장인물들의 추구를 작가의 비관적 인생관에 기인하는 것으로 보지 않는다. 그들의 추구가 목적지나 어련 상태에 도달하지 못하고, 그 결과 변형을 이루지 못하지만, Joyce는 이로써 Dublin이라는 거대한 현대 사회를 제시하고 있다. 결국 Ulysses는 과거 신화가 개인적 수준에 머물러 있음을 거부하며, 개인을 넘어서서 더욱 넓은 사회적 의미를 갖게 된다.;In Ulysses James Joyce has related the frame of Homer's Odyssey with the idea of time and space of a modern megalopolis. Joyce does not intend to imitate Homer's exactly here, on the otherwise he uses it as a foundation of his myth. Writing Ulysses on the mythic structure, the intend of the author is, to draw a parallel between the sterility of the modern society and the values of the myth to insist on the wasteness of the modern age, at the same time to provide the modern times with the significance of life which had been in the old times. That is, in the contemporary world where the meaning of human existence has been lost, Ulysses promotes the identify between individual and society and projects the solidarity of the groups with the function of ritual literature The most important mythic element immanent in Joyce's Ulysses is that of quest. The three characters are searching for something with different aspects in Dublin, June 16, 1904, which Joyce especially chose. By means of their quest Joyce is going to establish the conceptions of the myth as a permanent continuation beyond the limitations of time and space. Of course, the rests and consequences of the past are not allowed to them. Because as a modern myth the Ulysses is permitted only in the course of quest. Yet, I do not contribute the never-ending quests of the characters to the author's pessimistic vision. With the quests of the characters not arriving the destination, and as a result not achieving its transformation, Joyce provides us with the modern society Dublin. In conclusion, the Ulysses denies remaining in the dimension of individual which was accustomed in the old myth. Beyond individuals it has the broader social importance.
