Abstract

William Butler Yeats는 현대의 위대한 시인으로 인간의 삶에 대한 본질적인 진리를 탐구하는 것을 그의 중요한 임무로 간주하고, 평생에 걸쳐서 인생의 二律背反的인 면을 해결해 보려고 시도했다. 그의 인생의 말기인 1936년에서 부터 1939년까지 쓰여진 시들은 Last Poems라는 제목으로 死後에 편집되어 출판되었다. Yeats는 이 시집에서 그의 인생과 예술에 대한 최후의 견해를 피력하고 있다. Last Poems 에서 Yeats는 인생과 예술에 대한 견해를 펼쳐 보이기 위해 상반된 두가지 Perspectives를 유지하고 있다. 첫번째는 the cosmic poems 에서 볼 수 있는 예언자의 모습이다. 이러한 예언자적인 입장은 the´lust and rage´ poems에서 표현되는 방랑시인의 모습과 대조된다. Yeats는 삶과 현대문명에 팽배해 있는 혼란과 황폐함을 바라다보며, 이러한 인생의 고통에 對處하는 인간의 자세를 기쁨속에서 찾고있다. 평생동안 삶의 의미를 定立하고자 심혈을 기울였던 Yeats에게는 위대한 비극의 주인공들에게서 느껴지는 'tragic joy'의 감정에서 인생에 대한 단하나의 긍정적인 태도를 발견하였다. 그러나 이런 'tragic joy'를 단언했는데도 불구하고 그는 쉽사리 고통을 극복할 수 없었으며 인생에 대한 비극적인 견해를 확신있게 긍정할 수 없었다. 'tragic joy'의 균형도 계속해서 유지될 수 없었다. 그것은 본질적으로 궁극적인 인생의 의미를 순간적으로 흘끗 엿본것에 불과했다. 그래서 그는 역설적으로 'lust and rage'를 다룬 시들에서 나타나는 'wild old wicked man'의 역할에서 위안을 찾으려고 시도해 본다. 한편 Last Poems에는 이러한 두 종류의 주제들을 포괄적으로 다루고 있는 시들이 세편 실려있다. Yeats는 이 시들 속에서 the cosmic poem와 the 'lust and rage' poems 의 상반되는 perspectivies를 융합시켜서 인생과 예술에 대한 최종적인 선언을 보여준다. 본 논문은 Last Poem에 담긴 세 그룹의 시들을 분석하여 인생과 예술에 대한 Yeats의 견해를 고찰했다. 결론적으로 그는 예술이 인생의 모든 樣相을 완전히 표현할 수는 없지만, 진정한 예술은 인생을 비추어 줄 수 있다고 생각한다. 그리고 진정한 예술은 정신적인 귀족주의를 보존하는 동시에 민중의 삶에 뿌리를 박아야 하며, 진정한 예술가는 이기적이고 현대적이며, 불안한 요소들을 止場하고 전통적인 고결함과 아름다움을 그리는데 기쁨을 느낄것을 주장하고 있다.;One of the best poets in the modern times, Yeats saw his essential task as being the pursuit of essential truths about the unique nature of human life, and had tried to solve the life's antinomies all through his life. The poems written in the final period of his life from 1936 to 1939 were edited and published in the title of Last Poem after his death. The main interest of these poems is the final judgement on his life and art. Yeats has two opposite perspectives in Last Poems to show his final attitude about life and art. One is the prophet's perspective seen in the cosmic poems. The prophetic perspective of the Last Poems is counterpointed by that of gleeman in the 'lust and rage' poems. Looking out over the whole of human life, and its prevailing desolation, he tries to find the proper response to life and suffering in terms of a gaiety. Throughout his life he had tried to make sense of life without distorting it, and the emotion of tragic joy felt by the great tragic heroes now appears to him as the only possible final, positive response to life. In spite of his assertion of tragic joy in some poems, suffering is not always so easily transcended, nor the tragic view accepted so confidently. The equipoise of tragic joy is not an attitude that can persisted in. It is essentially a brief glimpse of life's ultimate meaning. As a result he tries to find relief in the role of 'wild old wicked man' in the 'lust and rage' poems paradoxically. Also there are three central poems which bracket two groups of poems in the Last Poems. They fuse two opposite perspectives of the cosmic poems and the 'Iust and rage' poems to show his final assertion about life and art. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate Yeat's attitude about life and art in the Last Poems through the analysis of three groups of poems. The conclusion is that true art can shape life, though it can not express life's fullness. Yeats holds true art must be aristocratic in spirit yet rooted in the life of the people, true artists have delighted in traditional sanctity and loveliness below all that is individual, modern and restless.
