This paper focused not only on providing historical materials for drama, movie and play in the future, but also on investigating the depth and change of historical research on dress styles. It is analyzing dress styles from the historical view in commercial picture Jangheebin, which is based on the story about the royal concubine Jang in the age of King Sukjong in the Chosun Dynasty and pointing out errors in expression by comparing dresses in the pictures with those in that age. As for the methodologies of the research, two movies(1961 and 1968) and three TV dramas(1988, 1995 and 2003) are reviewed. the historical background of Jangheebin and changes in picture Jangheebin is collected, and then, dress styles appearing in the pictures in the point of highlight scene and character respectively are examined. In addition, the dress styles in the pictures were compared with remaining dresses from King Sukjong and those in the literature of that age. Even though the general story of the same historical background is produced as a picture, it describes dress styles differently because the dramatic structure reflects the social, cultural and historical characteristics of the period when the film is made. When scrutinizing the trend of historical research on Korean dress style through picture Jangheebin, movies in the 1960s tended to emphasize on dramatic requirement rather than historical authenticity. Pictures in 1988 try to keep track of the rule of historical research and show the marks of efforts to reproduce original dress styles pertinent to situations and the social standings of characters, but still quite small number of dresses were usually made without thorough historical research. there hereby was no change in dress styles and the dress style of the late Chosun Dynasty appeared despite the historical background was the age of King Sukjong, the middle of the Chosun Dynasty. Jangheebin broadcast by SBS in 1995 showed much advanced historical research, yet they did not make suitable costume changes with the variable scenes. In the Jangheebin KBS in 2003, the largest number of diverse dresses appeared, which is reproducing well the original dress style in the middle of the Chosun Dynasty. However, the use of many fluorescent or high-chroma colors for maximizing screen effects was not compatible with the historical research. This study researched dress styles of pictures in detail, there are three parts-ordinary clothes, extraordinary dresses, special dresses in the highlight scenes. Highlight scenes consist of national wedding ceremonies, national funerals, dismissal from the palace and bestowal of poison. A wedding ceremony at court is composed of six steps, which are Napchae, Gogi, Chinyeong, Napjing, Chaekbi and Dongroi. Dresses are different in each of the six steps. Most pictures reproduce Chinyeong through historical investigation, but not all the six steps of the ceremony. The forms of ceremonial dresses were Myeonbok(Ceremonial robe of the emperor) for King Sukjong and Chijeokeui(Ceremonial robe) for Queen Inhyeon except the movie in 1968. Cabinet ministers wore a gold crown and a court suit with a baton in hands, and court ladies put on Nokwonsam(Ceremonial robe). As for the system of funeral dresses in the Chosun Dynasty, the term of wearing, fabricating methods and the thickness of used cloth were different according to the relationship between the mourner and the dead person. But, pictures did not show such differences accurately. For instance, funeral dresses were just white-patched everyday dresses, and even pictures in 1960's omitted funeral dresses. Pictures in 1995 temporarily showed King Sukjong who wore Choibok(Mourner's garb). In the scenes that Jang and Queen Inhyeon were driven out of the palace, they dressed Sangbok[white Jeogori(Korean-style jackets) md white Chima(skirt)], but their dress style outside the palace was different each other. Jang appeared in a dress similar to that of an aristocratic woman, while Queen Inhyeon like a sinner kept wearing the Sangbok all the time in that period. This seems to describe and stress on the personality of the characters. The most interesting scene is that Jang received the bestowal of poison. This scene is very different with respect to the producer's interpretation of this historical event. As looked into pictures in 1961 and 1968, Jang received poison letting down her hair and wearing Sangbok, while poison is bestowed on her in ordinary dresses at the scene of cinema in 1968. In the analysis of the dress styles of each character, we researched those of Jang, Queen Inhyeon, King Sukjong, court ladies, military officers, aristocratic ladies and shamans. Each picture maintained the basic forms of Jeogori(Korean-style jackets) and Chima(Skirt) identified from historical investigation. Dress styles during the period of King Sukjong appeared in the picture of 1995. Jang's dress styles were divided into that of the private house before entering the palace, that of a court lady, that of a royal concubine and that of a queen. The dress style at the private house and the palace was not much different from that of Queen Inhyeon. Concubines and the queen basically wore Dangeui(Ceremonial long jacket), differences in which were the coverage of gold leaves, whether Bo(Insignia) was put on or not, and whether Srandan(Gold foil) existed on Chima or not. King Sukjong's dress styles comprised dresses and plain clothes. Ordinary dresses are basically Gonryongpo(Royal robe) with Ikseonkgwan(Royal crown with ordinary dresses). The king appeared in the dress most of time in picture, but the shape of Gonryongpo and Ikseonkgwan is slightly different among pictures. Plain clothes were Dopo(Outer robe) or Changeui(Outer robe) with Gat(Traditional cylidrical Korean hat) on the head for both the king and military officers. The dress style of court ladies was different according to their position. The most common dresses of Naein(Court lady) were light blue Samhoijang Jeogori and deep blue chima, and those of Sanggung(Court lady) were green Mindang Jeogori(Korean-style jackets with no pattern) and deep blue Chima. The ordinary dress of civil and military officers was Gwanbok(Official robe), but military officers occasionally wore Gugunbok(Military robe). Civil officers were distinguished from military ones by the shape and color of the embroidered insignias on the breast and the back of their robes. The basic shape was identical to that of the king's Gonryongpo. Officers' plain clothes were also the same as the king's. Ladies who were allowed to access the palace wore Samhoijang or Banhoijang Jeogori and Chima at ordinary times and wore Mindangeui and Chima when entering the palace. The dress style of shamans appears differently, but in general they wore Dongdari(Military uniform) and Jeonbok (Sleeveless robe) with Jeonrip(Hat) on the head, or Cheolik(Coat with pleats) with armholes and Jeonrip on the head. As presented above, this paper examined characteristics and changes in each period through picture Jangheebin, which has been produced repeatedly since the 1960s to the present in 2003. There has been remarkable development in historical research on the shape of dresses, but dress styles tend to be exaggerated and excessively decorated using brilliant colors, gorgeous ornaments and much advanced makeup techniques. Historical research is important in historical picture because the visual representation of historical facts may cause people to have misunderstanding of history. Thus historical pictures are always in dilemma between reflecting historical facts and stressing on dramatic expressions. Inadequate expressions maybe inevitable in producing historical dramas due to the dramatist's intervention, the cost of production and the fact that dresses are merely properties of the picture, but the picture in 1995 was distinctive in that Choibok(Mourner's garb)and discolored dresses were worn although it could not show all systems of funeral dresses perfectly. If we keep going on such an effort to revive historical realities, the environment of making historical dramas is getting better and better. In addition, the era of King Sukjong was the period of factionalism. Diversification and precision of the style or shape of dresses allows the picture to be much more realistic.-
