은유이해의 초기 처리과정

Abstract

이 연구는 은유(metaphor)의 심적 처리 과정에 관한 구조사상(structure-mapping) 이론과 범주포함(class-inclusion)이론의 상반되는 가정들을 살펴본 후, 실험을 통하여 이를 검증함으로써 어떠한 이론이 은유의 처리과정을 설명하는데 있어 더 타당한지를 밝히고자 하였다. 구조사상이론은 근거영역과 표적영역의 구조적 정렬(structural alignment)과정을 통해 새로운 은유의 처리가 시작된다고 주장하는 반면, 범주포함이론은 근거영역이 포함되는 상위 범주에 표적영역의 한정적인 차원들(attributive dimensions)이 포함됨으로써 은유처리가 시작된다는 상호작용론적인 입장을 취하고 있다. 종전의 은유 처리에 관한 대부분의 연구결과들은 은유의 초기 처리과정이 역할 중립적(role-neutral)임을 보임으로써 구조사상이론을 지지하였다 즉, 근거영역과 표적영역의 순서가 바뀌었을 때, 은유의 초기 처리과정이 영향을 받지 않음으로써 정렬과정이 입증되었다. 그러나 이 연구자는 은유를 이해하기 위해서, 먼저 정렬과정 이전에 새로운 은유임을 인식할 수 있는 단계가 선행되어야 한다고 주장하였다. 즉, 새로운 은유의 처리는 정렬 과정이 아니라, 장기 기억에 저장되어 있는 관습적 은유(conventionalized metaphor)를 탐색, 비교하는 과정에서 출발한다고 가정하였다. 따라서 이 연구의 가정은 방향성(directionality)을 전제하며, 이것은 정렬과정을 통한 초기 비방향적(nondirectional)처리 과정을 주장하는 구조사상이론과 대립되는 것이라 할 수 있다. 실험 1의 결과, 연구자의 가정이 지지되었다. 즉, 관습적 은유 점화조건이 중성 점화조건보다 유의미하게 빠른 반응시간을 나타내었다. 이 결과는 해석해야 할 새로운 은유 이전에 관습적 은유를 먼저 봄으로써, 기억을 탐색해야 하는 인지적 노력을 절약해 주기 때문으로 해석할 수 있다. 만약, 구조사상이론이 맞다면, 두 조건간 반응시간에 유의미한 차이가 나타나지 않아야 한다. 실험 2는 좀 더 직접적으로 구조사상이론과 범주포함이론을 비교하였다 즉, 순서를 뒤집은 역방향 은유(reversed metaphor)와 정방향 은유(forward metaphor)를 비교했을 때, 반응시간에서 유의미한 차이가 나타났다. 또한 구조사상이론의 가정들이 잘 나타날 수 있는 조건들의 결과들을 분석했을 때도 구조사상이론을 지지되는 증거들은 발견되지 않았다. 따라서 실험 1과 2의 결과들은 구조사상이론을 지지하지 않으며, 범주포함이론 이 은유의 심적 처리 자정을 설명하는 더 타당한 이론임을 제안한다. 결론적으로 이 연구는 실험 1과 2를 통하여 오랫동안 지지되어왔던 정렬론 보다 범주포함론이 은유의 처리과정을 설명하는 더 타당한 이론임을 밝히고 아울러 새로운 은유를 처리하는 과정은 관습적인 은유를 처리하는 것에서 시작된다는 새로운 가설을 제안, 검증했다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.;For this study, it is necessary to observe the contrary hypothesis between two theories' the structure-mapping theory that is about the psychological interpretation process of the metaphor and the class-inclusion theory T tned to find out which theory is more appropriate to explain the process of the metaphor through the experiments. The structure-mapping theory asserts that the new metaphor interpretation begins from the structural alignment of the source and target domains. On the other hand, the class-inclusion theory insists an interaction theory. It tells that when the attributive dimensions of the target domain become the part of the superior category, which includes the source domain, the metaphor process begins. Most of the previous studies supported the structure-mapping theory by showing the early stage of the Interpretation process is role-neutral. Therefore, when the source domain and the target domain order changes, it can demonstrated the structural alignment showing the before procedure changes and the early stage of the interpretation process. However, to understand the metaphor, I believe it is necessary to have the preceding stage to recognize that it is the metaphor. Hence, the new process of the metaphor is not the alignment I believed it begins at the process of investigating and comparing the conventionalized metaphor that was kept in a long-term memory. In consequence, hypothesis of this study assumes the directionality and this apposed to the structure-mapping theory which asserts the early nondirectional process. The result of the first experiment supported my hypothesis. The conventional metaphor priming condition significantly displayed the rapid reaction time than the neutral priming condition. It is because that saved some efforts to researching for the memories by looking at the conventionalized metaphor first. The second experiment directly compared the structure-mapping theory and the class-inclusion theory. When comparing the reversed and forward metaphor, the reaction time significantly showed the difference. As well, when analyzing the outcomes of the hypothesis of the structure-mapping theory, it was unable to find the evidence that supports the structure-mapping theory. it suggests the class-inclusion theory is more appropriate to explain the psychological process of the metaphor. In conclusion, through the both experiments 1 and 2, the class-inclusion theory is the appropriate to describe the psychological interpretation process of the metaphor than the alignment theory which was supported by many studies for a long time. At the same time, this study verifies that the process of interpretation the new metaphor begins from approaching the conventionalized metaphor.
