Since the reduction of transformational component to "move-α", various ideas on the structure of IP have been proposed in order to explain linguistic data in the spirit of "move-α". This article aims to assertain the most appropriate structure of IP in English, focusing on the syntax of verb. In order to reach this goal, changes and developments in the status of auxiliaries in generative grammar are investigated. There is are two schools on the status of auxiliaries in classical transformational grammar. One is the Phrase Structure Analysis which postulates "AUX" category and emphasizes the helping character of auxiliaries. The other is the Main Verb Analysis focusing on the verbal character of auxiliaries without "AUX" category. INFL in Chomsky (1981) contains the affixes related to tense and agreement features. It was not until Barriers (1986) that the movement of verb is explained by means of "move-α". On the basis of Barrier framework, more articulated IP structure with respect to the syntax of verb is proposed by Pollock (1989). He divides INFL info two different heads -- i. e. Tense and AGR -- and distinguishes θ-opaque AGR in English from θ-transparent AGR in French. Chomsky, following Pollock, suggests the Principles of Economy, consisting of two sub-principles. One is the Principle of Least Effort which claims that shorter derivations are chosen over longer ones. The other is the Last Resort Principle that language particular rule is used only to save the valid D-structure --that means, only when UG cannot derive the correct result, the language particular rule applies. According to the Principles of Economy, the shortest movement, V-Raising is considered first. If V-Raising is prohibited, I lowers. Only when neither of two movements is possible, English-particular rule of "do-insertion" applies. Pesetsky(1989) suggests ubiquitous μ position above each auxiliary and main verb as an option. He confutes Chomsky by means of confutes Chomsky by means of "do-inertness" phenomena. However, his suggestion overgenerates because of the μ position. I suggest a modification of Chomsky's Principles of Economy: language-particular rule in English is not "do-insertion" but "Affix-Raising". 'Do' is an element inserted at PF to the stranded affix. This revised version of Chomsky's principle can explain "do-inertness" and block the overgeneration in Pesetsky.;변형생성문법은 그 통사부의 규칙을 최소형태로 만들어 여러가지 단위원리(modules)들과 함께 문장 생성을 설명하려는 방향으로 발전해 왔다. Lectures on Government and Binding(1981)에서 INFL이라는 범주에 시제(Tense)와 일치(Agreement)에 관한 접사(affix)를 포함시킨다.
