Abstract

Roussel (Roussel, Albert Charles Paul Marie; 1869-1937) is considered a s one of the greatest composers after Debussy in the first half of twentieth century French music. He demonstrated his musicality in his art songs with a unique musical style including outstanding counterpoint, diversity of rhythm and colorful harmony. He was the bridge between the trasitional French post-romanticism of the 19th century and 20th century music. He studied composition, orchestration and music history with d'Indy (Vincent d'Indy; 1851-1931) at Schola Cantorum. His music shows exotic taste as in the French romantic style, and in d'Indy and Debussy's impressionism. It seems that his favor towards exoticism emerged from the experience of his long journeys, especially to India. Although his music received some influence from d'Indy and Debussy, it displays his originality as an outstanding composer. One of the characteristic features in his music is the constitution of the vocal line. It is constructed horizontally while the accompaniment serves as a part of the melody. Composing the art songs, Roussel seemed to prefer texts which describe nature. He turned them into lyrical melodies which reveal the colorful description of the poetry and the rhythm of poetic meters. In the French music world, Poulenc (Francis Poulenc, 1899∼1963) is usually seen as the successor to Debussy. However, of his 140 or so compositions, the majority are vocal works, particularly art songs, in contrast to Roussel. Roussel excelled in all music genre, instrumental as well as vocal, and as such, must be remembered as one of the greatest French composers after the time of Debussy. This thesis discusses Roussel's life as well as his music, especially his art songs, through an analysis of his <Six Me´lo'dies> - Light, Le Bachelier de Salamanque, Sarabande, Des fleurs font une broderie ..., Re´ponse d´une e´pouse sage and Juzz dans la nuit.;루셀(Roussel, Albert Charles Paul Marie; 1869-1937)은 20세기 프랑스 작곡가로, 프랑스에서는 드뷔시 이후에 가장 위대한 작곡가 중의 한사람으로 평가되고 있다. 그는 프랑스 음악사에서, 20세기 첫 반세기에 비중 있는 자리를 차지하고 있는 작곡가이다. 독특한 스타일과 당대 프랑스 작곡가들 중 뛰어난 대위법 구사와 리듬의 다양성과 세련된 화음을 보여준 예술가곡으로 그 음악성을 평가받고 있다. 루셀은 19세기 프랑스의 후기 낭만주의와 20세기 현대 음악의 과도기를 연결해 주는 작곡가로 개성적인 작곡기법을 가지고 있다. 그는 스콜라 칸토룸 (Schola Cantorum)에서 댕디(Vincent d'Indy;1851-1931)와 작곡과 관현악법, 음악사를 공부하였다. 댕디와 드뷔시(Claude Achille Debussy, 1862-1918)에게서 받은 영향으로 인상주의와, 오랜 기간동안의 여행에서 말미암은 이국적 정서, 인도의 선법(旋法) 등을 자신의 음악에 반영하여, 이국적인 취향의 테마를 프랑스의 낭만주의 풍으로 곡을 쓴 작곡가였다. 댕디와 드뷔시의 영향을 받고 출발한 루셀은 그 후 그 누구에게도 속하지 않는 독창성을 발휘했다. 그의 음악은 리듬의 강조와 수평적인 라인에 기초한 선율 구성을 추구한 것이 특징이다. 이와 동시에 각 성부는 화성의 각 파트를 담당하도록 세심하게 구성되어 하나의 화음으로 들리는 기법을 구사했다. 루셀의 자연 친화적 성향은 성악곡을 작곡하는데 있어서 자연을 묘사한 시들을 선택하여 시의 운율과 특징을 반영하는 경쾌한 리듬과 오감(五感)을 통해 시의 내용을 묘사하는 듯한 색채감 있고, 향기가 나는 듯한 서정적인 선율과 화성을 구사하였다. 전반적으로 그의 음악은 현대적인 모든 요소를 구사하면서도 조성과 서정적인 면을 가지고 있는 후기 낭만주의적, 신고전주의적인 경향을 보여 준다. 루셀의 음악이 음악사에서 비중이 있는 것은, 그가 20세기 작곡가중 프랑스의 고전, 낭만적인 요소를 현대적이고도 개성적으로 조화시킨 관현악 어법을 사용한 작곡가 중의 하나라는데 있다. 일반적으로 드뷔시 이후에 프랑스 음악사에 있어서 뛰어난 업적을 남긴 작곡가로 풀랑(Francis Poulenc, 1899-1963)이 언급되지만, 풀랑의 작품(140여곡) 대부분이 성악곡, 특히 가곡에 초점이 맞추어진 것을 고려한다면, 기악, 성악, 모두에서 뛰어난 작품을 남긴 루셀이야말로 드뷔시 이후에 가장 많은 업적을 남긴 프랑스 작곡가들 중의 한 사람으로 반드시 기억되어야 한다고 본다. 본 논문에서는 루셀의 생애와 음악적 특징을 소개하고, 그의 가곡에 대해 연구하고자 하며, 그의 성악 작품 중 중요하고도 대표적인 곡들을 출판업자가 편집한 6개의 멜로디(Six Me'lodies) - Light(빛), Le Bachelier do Salamanque(살라망끄의 기사), Sarabande(사라방드), Des fleurs font une broderie...(꽃들이 수를 놓는다...), Re'ponse d'une e'pouse sage(현명한 아내의 대답), Jazz dans la nuit(한밤의 재즈) - 를 분석하여 그의 가곡의 특징을 살펴보았다.
