Samuel Barber Excursions, Op.20에 대한 분석 연구

Abstract

짧은 역사에도 불구하고 20세기 미국음악은 이전의 유럽음악의 반영에서 벗어나 미국 작곡가 고유의 독자적인 음악을 갖고자 하는 노력으로 다양한 양식들이 공존하게 된다. 이 시기에 미국을 대표하는 작곡가중 한 사람인 사무엘 바버(Samuel Barber, 1910∼1981)는 신낭만주의로 분류되는 보수적인 작곡가로 그의 음악은 서정적인 선율, 전통적인 화성에 바탕을 두고 현대적인 화성, 리듬을 융합시킴으로 새로운 음악적 스타일을 창출하였다. 「Excursions, op. 20(1944)」는 바버의 피아노 대표작품 중 하나이며, 전통적이고 보수적인 성향을 고수하던 1940년대 이전의 작품과 달리, 과도기적인 시기에 작곡 된 곡으로 민속적이고 대중적인 요소를 결합시킨 작품이다. 이 곡은 조성이나 형식면에서는 매우 단순하고 간결한 짜임새를 가지고 있으나 리듬 면에서는 다양한 변화를 보여주고 있다. 제1곡 Un poco allegro는 왼손에서 규칙적으로 반복되는 오스티나토 음형 위에 오른손의 비교적 자유로운 선율이 흐르는 부기우기(boogie-woogie)스타일이며, 제2곡 In slow blues tempo는 블루노트, 당김음, 변박, 약박에서의 악센트 사용 등으로 복합적이며 블루스의 느낌이 잘 표현된 곡이다. 제3곡 Allegro는 카우보이 노래의 서정적이며 목가적인 멜로디를 변주시킨 곡으로 8:7의 헤미올라 리듬을 사용하여 복잡하지 않은 어법으로 뚜렷한 멜로디를 보여주고 있다. 제4곡 Allegro no]to는 당김음, 불규칙한 악센트를 사용하여 농가무(Barn dance)를 양식화한 곡으로 피들(fiddle)의 음색을 흉내 내는 멜로디로 리듬을 강조하여 경쾌한 분위기이다. Barber의 「Excursions, op. 20(1944)」는 자유롭고 낭만적이며 서정적인 멜로디와, 미국의 여러 지방의 전통적인 민속음악에서 유래된 요소와 재즈의 요소를 가진 독특한 모음곡 형식을 취하고 있어, 그만의 독특한 음악적 특징을 잘 보여주고 있는 곡이다.;In spite of its short history, the 20th century American music grew out of the previous influence of European music, and its composers tried to have their unique music so that various styles coexisted. Samuel Barber (1910 - 1981), one of representative composers in America, is classified as a conservative .composer with neo-romanticism, and he had his own individuality and musical expression with modem Americanized rhythm and subject based on traditional style and lyricism. 「Excursion, op. 20(1944)」 is his middle years work. It was composed in his transitional period, containing folk popular elements. This four-piece suite has very simple and concise structure in composition and style aspect, but diverse variation in rhythm. The first piece [Un poco allegro] has boogie-woogie style where the left hand repeats ostinato figure while the right hand plays relatively free melody. The second piece [In slow blues tempo1 has complex and strong blues features with blue note, syncopation, irregular time and accents in auftakt. The third piece [Allegro] is a variation of the lyric and bucolic melody of a cowboy's song. It has distinct melody without complex expression while using 8:7 hemiola rhythm. The fourth piece [Allegro molto] conventionalizes a barn dance by using syncopation and irregular accents; its rhythm is emphasized with fiddle-like tone, resulting in a cheerful tone. This work can be considered as Barber's masterpiece containing the romantic tradition as well as modem expression.
