전체 4곡으로 구성된 연가곡「4개의 인상」은 유미주의 시인 와일드의 시를 사용한 것으로서, 제 1곡 “ Le Jardin (The Garden)”은 늦가을 정원의 인상을 표현하였고, 제 2곡 “Impression du Matin (Early Morning in London)”은 이른 아침의 런던의 인상을, 제 3곡 “La Mer (The Sea)”는 겨울밤의 바다에 대한 인상을, 제 4곡 “Le Re´veillon (Dawn)”은 여명의 인상을 나타낸다. This thesis is an analysis of Charles T. Griffes’s (1884-1920) song cycle, “Four Impressions,” which is one of the works performed by the researcher for the master’s recital. The purposes of this thesis are as follows: First, to examine the characteristics of “Four Impressions,” and to help understand and perform this work; secondly, to know the general characteristics of his vocal music and comprehend the significance of Griffes’s place in the history of American song genre. In order to fulfill these objectives, we have reviewed the following aspects of Griffes’s life and work in this paper; the circumstances of the early 20th century, when Griffes was most active as a composer; the aestheticism of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), for whose poem the song cycle was composed; Griffes’s personal life, his vocal works and their characteristics; and lastly, the lyrics and melody of “Four Impressions.” Griffes was an American pianist and composer who played an important role in bridging the late-romantic period and impressionist period in the early 20th century. He was also a leading composer in the history of American song genre after the tradition of Edward MacDowell (1861-1908), and a contemporary of Charles Ives (1874-1954). His works can be divided into three chronological periods according to the time of their composition and their musical attributes. In his early songs, the influence of German late-romanticism is evident. In the middle works, the characteristics of impressionism are noteworthy. In his late compositions, the colors and atmosphere of the oriental music are apparent. Griffes had inherited traditional musical thought, but he had longed to express it more freely through the forms of 20th century music. Even when he chose texts to set music, he not only uses the German and symbolistic poetry, but also the Chinese poetry, and traditional poetry of various other countries, thus displaying much cultural diversity. The song cycle, “Four Impression,” consists of 4 songs, and uses the text by Oscar Wilde, the aestheticist poet. The first song, “Le Jardin (The Garden),” expresses the impression of a garden in late autumn; the second song, “Impression du Matin (Early Morning in London),” the impression of early-morning London; the third song, “La Mer (The Sea),” the impression of the ocean in the winter night; and the fourth song, “Le Reveillon (Dawn),” the impression of the dawn. The song cycle as a whole creates the impression of viewing four pieces of paintings, consequently carries significance in examplifying the characteristics of Griffes’ impressionist vocal music.-
