Johannes Brahms의「Klavierstücke Op. 118」에 관한 연구

Abstract

The period of Romanticism, it was the period of variety of piano works. During that period, composers excluded the popular program music to bring birth to the short lyrical works called "Charakterstücke". Unlike his contemporary composers, however, Brahms did not attach caricatural themes to such works while many other composers used ordinary themes primarily such as interlude or caprice. Moreover, he did not link his music to the Romanticism literature but maintained his works to be universal and neutral. In addition, unlike his contemporary Romanticism composers, he breathed a new life into the Classical forms despite he lived in the age of Romanticism. Since he kept the Classical forms thoroughly, he is called 'Romantic Classicist'. The subject of this study shows characteristics of Brahms' later piano works well. This work titled "Klavierstücke Op. 118" consists of 6 pieces in total: Intermezzo - Intermezzo- Ballade - Intermezzo - Romanze - Intermezzo. All these pieces are using simple 3-part form (A-B-A) except first Intermezzo. In terms of melodies, third, sixth and eight are frequently overlapped, while such non-harmonies as passing tones and auxiliary tones appear in the a wide compass together with the simple accompaniment of a distributed harmony. In terms of rhythms, hemiola and such cross rhythms as 2:3 are used, while dotted notes and syncopation are frequently shown. And stretto, canon and such counterpoint techniques as ostinato are used much. All in all, the subject work of Brahms' features Classical forms and techniques as well as varying harmonies, free rhythms, melodies across a wide compass and other Romantic techniques. Thus, it is not exaggerating to say that this work represent Brahms' late piano works. This study reviewed Brahms' life and then, examined his piano works in terms of periods and forms and thereupon, sampled researcher's graduation performance work of "Klavierstücke Op. 118" representing his late piano works and thereby, analyzed its melodies, rhythms, harmonies and forms.;낭만시대에는 많은 피아노 작품들이 작곡 되었는데, 작곡가들은 당시 유행하는 표제음악을 배제하고 성격소품이라고 일컬어지는 짧은 서정적 소품들을 탄생시킨다. 하지만, 브람스는 동시대 작곡가들과 달리 성격 소품에 묘사적인 제목을 붙이는 표제음악을 만들지 않고 간주곡, 기상곡 등의 일반적인 제목을 붙이는 절대음악을 주로 작곡하였으며 독일 낭만주의 문학운동으로 인한 문학과의 연계성을 두지 않고 곡 자체가 보편적이고 중립적인 성격을 지니고 있다. 또한 당시 낭만주의 작곡가들과는 달리 낭만주의 시대에 살면서 고전주의 형식에 새로운 생명을 불어 넣음으로써 고전주의의 형식들을 철저하게 따른 보수적 작곡가로 낭만주의적 고전주의자(Romantic Classicist)로 불리운다. 본 논문에서 연구할 브람스의 후기 피아노 음악의 특징을 잘 보여주는「Klavierstücke Op. 118」은 1. Intermezzo, 2. Intermezzo, 3. Ballade, 4. Intermezzo, 5. Romanze, 6. Intermezzo의 총 6개의 곡으로 구성되어있다. 이 곡의 형식은 첫 번째 곡을 제외하고는 모두 단순한(A-B-A)의 3부 형식으로 작곡 되었으며 선율은 3, 6, 8도의 잦은 중복, 경과음, 보조음 등의 비화성음, 분산화음 형태의 단순한 반주가 넓은 음역에서 나타난다. 리듬은 헤미올라(Hemiola), 그리고 2:3과 같은 교차리듬을 사용하였으며 붓점 음표와 당김음의 빈번한 사용이 나타나며, 근접모방과 캐논, 오스티나토(Ostinato)등의 대위적 기법을 즐겨 사용하였다. 이와 같이 고전적인 형식과 기법의 틀을 가지고 변화 화성, 자유로운 리듬, 넓은 음역에 걸쳐 나타나는 선율과 같은 낭만적인 기법을 동시에 지니며 브람스의 후기 피아노 음악적 특징을 여실히 보여주는 대표적 작품이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 본 논문에서는 브람스의 피아노 음악을 중심으로 그의 후기 대표적 작품인 「Klavierstücke Op. 118」에 관한 연구에 앞서 그의 생애를 먼저 살펴본 후, 그의 피아노 음악을 시기와 형식면에서 나누어 특징을 알아보고 필자의 졸업 연주곡이였던 이 곡을 선율, 리듬, 화성, 형식적인 면을 중점적으로 연구하였다.
