Roger Quilter의 Three Shakespeare Songs, Op.6에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 영국의 대문호 William Shakespeare의 희곡에 나오는 노래들에 곡을 붙인 Roger Quilter의 가곡집 「Three Shakespeare Songs, Op. 6」에 관한 연구이다. Roger Quilter(1877∼1953)는 영국 브라이튼 태생의 작곡가로 합창과 기악작품들도 다수 작곡하였으나 아름다운 가곡으로 더욱 주목받는 작곡가이다. 소박한 선율과 세련된 화성법을 구사하는 퀄터는 20세기에 새로운 경향의 음악교육을 받았음에도 불구하고 그의 가곡 작곡에 있어서 낭만주의적인 보수적 태도를 견지하였다. 퀄터의 선율적 감각은 화성을 기술적으로 잘 결합시킴으로 그 진가를 더하는데, 그의 시에 대한 음악적 화답은 시어의 강세, 문장의 강세와 잘 어울려져 호소력 짙은 가곡을 탄생시켰다. 그가 작곡한 112곡의 가곡은 그의 미적, 음악적 감각이 가곡에서 얼마나 잘 발휘되었는지 보여 준다. 영국의 시를 사랑하였던 컬터는 가사의 선택에 있어서 주로 잘 알려진 시인의 시를 사용하였는데 Shakespeare를 비롯한 17세기 엘리자베스시대 시인의 시나, 자신과 동시대 인물인 19세기 시인 Herrick. Roger Quilter (1877-1953), born in Brighton, England, is an attractive composer known more for his songs than choral or instrumental music works. While his music consists of comparatively simple melodies and polished harmony, and for all that he was thoroughly educated in the new trends of music, he kept a conservative attitude towards his song compositions. Through his 112 songs, he has shown how fully his aesthetic and musical senses were displaced. He, who loved English poetry, used the poems of well-known writers, preferring Shakespeare, as well as Herrick, Blake, Shelley, and Tennyson, who were poets of the Elizabethan and Victorian periods, respectively. Especially, he is famous for his Shakespearean songs which provided twenty texts. One of Quilter's most appealing characteristics is the word stress and verbal intonation of each song, a true marriage of music and literature. 「Three Shakespeare Songs」, are amongst the most frequently performed of his songs, and were composed in 1905. They consist of 'come away, Death', 'O Mistress Mine', and 'Blow, blow, thou Winter Wind'. These songs, which are performed in many recitals, reveal the meaning of the poems, and comprise of Quilter's most remarkable achievements.
