삽화(Illustrations)를 통해 다시 읽는 Blake

Abstract

본 논문은 Songs of innocence and of Experience를 중심으로 삽화와 시를 함께 고찰하면서, 통합예술인 Songs가 보여주는 Blake의 현실의식을 고찰하고자 한다. 통합예술가인 블레이크의 독창성을 최초로 보여주는 Songs의 시와 삽화들은 중세 성경의 기법을 모방하여 구성되어 있으며, 시의 내용도 인간 창조로부터 구원에 이르는 성서의 내용을 기반으로 하고 있다. 그리고 삽화들은 아기예수, 마돈나, 요한, Tree of Jesse와 같은 전통성화의 구성요소로 이루어져 있다. 그러나 블레이크는 이러한 성서의 맥락을 의도적으로 변용하는데, 그것은 그의 적극적인 현실의식을 보여주기 위함이다. 블레이크가 가장 비판의 대상으로 지목한 것은 당대의 종교이다. 종교에 대한 비판적 시각은 인간이 하나님의 형상대로 선하게 창조되었다는 기독교의 원론적 인식에 대한 독창적인 이해로 이어진다. 이러한 인식은 인간의 구원이라는 종교의 소명을 다하지 못하는 종교의 타락과 위선의 일면을 보여주는 것으로 구체화된다. 그리고 어린이노동자 등 산업화가 낳은 현실의 문제에 주목하면서, 그러한 현실의 문제에 무기력하고 오히려 인간에게 억압적 기제로 작용하는 종교를 강력히 비판하고 풍자한다. 결국 블레이크는 기독교의 원론적인 구원의 방법은 종교의 타락과 산업화로 야기된 피폐한 현실을 구원할 수 없다는 인식을 보여준다. 통념적인 삽화의 의미에서 벗어난 블레이크의 독특한 삽화들은 독자의 창조적인 독서를 유도하여 그의 현실의식을 드러내는데 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 풍자적 요소가 강한 시에서 그 강도를 강화시키거나, 시에서 찾을 수 없는 시 해석의 단서들을 제공함으로써 모호하거나 단순한 시들을 새로운 각도에서 이해 할 수 있게 한다. 뿐만 아니라, 시와 모순된 삽화들을 통하여 폭 넓은 시 이해를 가능하게하여 블레이크의 독창적인 통합예술의 세계를 보이고 있다. 이러한 연구를 위하여, 본론 I에서는 통합예술의 이해를 돕기 위하여 화가, 삽화가로서 블레이크가 보이는 독창성을 살펴 본다. 블레이크에게 영향을 준 미학 전통과 거장들과의 비교를 통하여 통합예술을 형성한 그의 예술세계의 배경을 살펴 볼 수 있다. 본론 ll는 탄생, 타락, 구원이라고하는 성경적 맥락을 이용하여 세 범주로 나누어 시와 삽화를 함께 살펴본다. 인간의 탄생은 험악한 세상으로의 탄생이라는 의식에서 시작하여 구체적인 현실의 사회상들을 살피고, 기독교적 구원을 긍정하지 못하고 회의적으로 바라보고 있는 블레이크의 인식을 살펴본다. 이러한 통합예술이 가능하였던 것은 예술가이면서 판화가라는 기능공이었던 블레이크의 독창적 예술세계가 구축되어 있었기 때문이며, 그가 보여주는 성서와 성화의 변용은 그의 예술세계를 이해하는 기초가 될 수 있다.;This thesis examines Blake's consciousness of social reality in Songs of Innocence and of Experience, a composite art, by considering illustrations and poems together. The illustrations and poems of Songs show Blake's creativity as a composite artist. Songs is modeled after the Medieval Bible, especially The Psalter, and the contents of the poems were based on The Bible that contains the history of humankind from the creation to the redemption. In addition, Blake's illustrations show the iconographies of Christian Art, such as the Christ Child, Madonna, St. John, and the Tree of Jesse. This implies that both the poems and the illustrations are placed within the biblical contexts. However, Blake used these contexts distinctively to strengthen his social criticism. The contemporary Christian of that time is the first target of Blake's social criticism. Focusing on the social problems like child labor at that time, Blake bitterly satirizes the religion showing that the contemporary church is not only useless in giving charity but also oppressive in the management of the poor. Ultimately, Blake remains skeptical about the possibility of human redemption through the conventional religious institutions. Blake's original illustrations, which differ from conventional illustration and lead the readers' creative understanding, play an important role in presenting his social criticism. They invite various interpretations of the poetic texts, reinforcing the satire in poems or offering decisive clues to the textual meaning. And the contradiction between the illustration and the poem, making possible a different reading of the poems, is one of the characteristics of Blake's creative art world. Chapter Ⅰ is providing the background information about Blake as an artist and illustrator to interpret his composite art by surveying the aesthetic tradition and great artists that influenced his art. Chapter Ⅱ examines the poems and the illustrations together according to three categories : the birth, the fall, and the redemption. To Blake, the birth means coming into a dangerous world, and this society cannot be redeemed by the conventional principle of Christian church.
