Samuel Barber의 Song Cycle 〈Despite and Still〉 Op.41에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 현대 미국 예술가곡의 대표적인 작곡가 바버(Samuel Barber : 1910-1981)의 <Despite and Still> op.41 에 관한 연구이다. 바버의 음악은 낭만과 현대의 적절한 조화가운데 자신만의 독특한 색을 나타내고 있다. 그의 음악은 신낭만주의 (neo-romantic)계열로 분류되어진다. 낭만주의에 기초하여 전통적이고 보수적인 면을 가지고 있지만, 그 낭만성에만 의존하지 않고 인간의 감정표현을 위하여 20세기의 새로운 기법들을 적극적으로 수용하고, 그것들을 자신만의 독특한 색깔로 다시 만들어 냈다. 천부적인 감각과 음악적 재능은 그를 미국최고의 서정주의자로 만들었으며, 그런 그의 음악은 연주자와 청중모두에게 쉬우면서도 독특한 느낌으로 큰 호응을 받았다. 작곡가인 동시에 바리톤 가수였던 바버는 성악작품과 성악가에 대한 이해가 뛰어나 현대 미국 예술가곡의 발전에 있어서 핵심적인 인물이었다. 그의 가곡들은 그의 다른 작품들보다 자신의 서정성을 표현하기에 가장 적합했다. 본 논문은 미국의 예술가곡, 바버의 생애, 바버의 음악적 특징, 작품 <Despite and Still>op.41 (1968) 전곡을 분석하였다. 이 곡은 바버 후기의 작품으로 5곡으로 이루어져있다. 곡 전체의 형식, 성악 선율, 박자의 변화, 현대적 화성 등 곡 해석과 가사, 음악적 표현에 대한 성악적 연구를 해 보았다.;This thesis is the study about the song called <Despite and Still> composed by Samuel Barber (1910-1981), the representative composer of the modern American art song. Barber’s music shows the unique color of his own with the harmony of romanticism and modernism. His work is classified as neo-romantics. His work does contains traditional and conservative side, but he also progressively accepted the new techniques of the 20th century to express the emotion of the human, to create unique color of his own. Gifted sense and musical talent lead him to be the best lyricist of the United States, and his work was complimented by the performers and audiences with easy but unique feels. As a composer and baritone singer, he was the core person in the development of the American modern art songs due to his knowledge and understanding of vocal music and vocalists. His own art songs, compare to any other work of his, were the most adequate to express his own lyricism. This thesis analyzed the American art song, the life of Samuel Barber, characteristics of Barber’s music and the full length of <Despite and Still>. <Despite and Still> is the work of his later period and composed of 5 songs. This thesis shows the study of analysis of the music, such as form, melody, variation of rhythm, harmony and etc., and the vocal study of musical expressions.
