Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the factors affecting the continuous participation of housewives in volunteer activities and to provide efficient management methods for more active and sustainable volunteer activities. In order to achieve these purposes, the research examined how personal characteristics, family characteristics, psycho-social characteristics and organization characteristics respectively affect participation intensity, participation frequency, and participation period of volunteers. The research was carried out targeting 263 female volunteer workers, aged between 35 and 60, who belong to various volunteer centers located in Seoul. The study was conducted based on a social survey using survey questionnaire from April 27th to May 22nd in 2007. A frequency analysis, a correlation analysis, and a hierarchical multiple regression were utilized as data-analyzing methods by using a SPSS 12.0 (Statistical Package for Service 12.0) The results of this study are as follows: First, the variables of religion, participation type of volunteer activities, family support, sociality, social identity, education, relationship with clients and relationship with colleagues appear to be influential elements in participation intensity of volunteer activities. Regarding this, volunteers with no religion than Buddhist volunteers; volunteers working as small groups than independent volunteers; and volunteers with stronger family support seem to participate more enthusiastically in volunteer activities. In addition, volunteers with relatively higher sociality and social identity; volunteers with higher satisfaction at education opportunities and education contents; and volunteers with better relationship with clients and colleagues appear to show more intense participation in their volunteer activities. Second, five factors such as age, housework sharing, gender-role attitude, education, and recognition and compensation seem to be influential in participation frequency of volunteer activities. As volunteers are older; a degree of housework sharing among volunteers' family members is higher; volunteers' gender-role attitude is more modern; a degree of satisfaction of education opportunity and education contents is higher; and a degree of gratification by recognition and compensation is higher, volunteers' participation frequency seems to increase more. Third, participation duration of volunteer activities appears to be affected by volunteers' age, family support, supervision and evaluation, recognition and compensation, and relationship with supervisors. As volunteers are older; volunteers' family members show stronger support; volunteers feel stronger satisfaction with supervision and evaluation, recognition and compensation regarding their volunteer work; volunteers have better relationships with supervisors, volunteer workers seem to participate in their activities longer. Based on the results of this study, the following can be suggested in order to encourage more active and sustainable participation of middle aged women's volunteering activities. First, in order to help volunteers' family members recognize the value of volunteering various family volunteering program can be developed. Second, by providing diverse education opportunities for participants and by supporting different kinds of recognition and compensation, more active participation in volunteering can be drawn. Third, more participation can be encouraged when volunteers have better relationship with their colleagues through social gathering. Fourth, when supervisors and related officials evaluate volunteers through constant interest, volunteers can have positive relationship with them, and this can result in continuous participation of volunteering. It is appeared that volunteer activities of middle-aged women is affected by personal characteristics, family characteristics, psycho-social characteristics, and especially organization characteristics. Therefore, in order to encourage more active participation of middle-aged women in volunteering, development of various volunteer work programs and management methods is necessary.
