추상화에 따른 인간성 상실

Abstract

Underlying Faulkner's Novels can be discerned a vision the collapse of society and the dehumanization of mankind. Especially in Light in August and Absalom, Absalom!, Faulkner has shown man's inhumanity to man by abstract ideas. The abstraction, in this thesis, doesn't mean to treat a man as a individual personality but to categorize him by a certain concept. This abstraction, especially, embodied the racial division of men into black and white in southern society. In light in August, Joe Christmas is destroyed by this society and absolutist concepts. Absolutist concepts are Calvinistic division of men into the damned and the elect and racial division of men into black and white. Joe Christmas is rejected by his brutal society from his birth has been thrust into the world of hatred and alienation. In the case of Joe Christmas' human condition, Faulkner shows the signs of loss of individuality in the society by the abstract racial concept. Absalom, Abslom! is a condemnation of the morals, mores, and ethics of his own Southern Culture. Quentin tells the story of the Sutpen family whose history must be seen as analogous to the history of the South. Thomas Sutpen conceives and pursues a grand design was conceived when the young Sutpen was insulted as the result of a strict caste system; yet the design itself is constructed to embrace that very caste system which caused Sutpen's rejection. Sutpen's major crime is that of refusing to recognize his son, Charles Bon. He rejects his son, because he has one drop of blackblood. Also, Henry rejects his brother, Bon and kills him, because Henry must forbid intermarriage between black and white. He acted simply and directly as the society demanded. Thus, it is through the character of Henry that Faulkner presents the most vivid criticism of the South. Though these novels deals with the particular forces in the South and upon the Southerner, it is fundamentally a study of the effect of any abstract absolutist view that makes the human beings its victim.;Faulkner는 대부분의 그의 소설에서 사회의 붕괴현상과 더불어 인간이 비인간화되는 모습에 관심을 갖고 있다. 특히, Light in August와 Absalom, Absalom!에서, Faukner는 추상화된 개념에 의해 인간성이 상실되는 모습을 보여 준다. 본 논문에서의 추상화란, 인간을 개성있는 한 개인으로 대우하지 않고, 일종의 개념에 따라 유형화시키는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 추상화는 대표적으로 남부사회에 만연된 흑과 백의 인종적 편견 위해서 이루어지게 된다. Light in August에서 Joe Christmas는 이러한 인종적 편견과, 캘빈주의 종교의 절대론자들에 의해 파괴된다. 남부의 절대론자들은 그들의 캘빈주의사상에 의거해 인간을 저주받은 흑인과 선택받은 백인으로 구분 짓는다. Joe 는 이러한 비인간적 구분이 행하여지는 사회에서 태어날때부터 버림받고 소외당한다. 이러한 Joe Christmas의 존재상황을 통해, Faulkner는 추상화된 개념이 만연된 사회에서, 한 인간이 인간성을 상실하게 되는 모습을 그리고 있다. 또한, Absalom, Absalom!은 남부의 비인간적인 행위와 윤리에 대해 비난하는 작품으로, Qnentin은 Sutpen 가족의 이야기에서 남부 역사의 모습을 찾게된다. Thomas Sutpen은 추상화된 원칙에 의거한 'design'을 세우게 되는데 그 'design'은 그가 어린시절, 일종의 계급제도에 의해 인간성을 무시당했을 때 세우게 된 것이다. 하지만 그의 'design'은 그가 당했던 인간을 거부하는 행위를 그대로 재현하는 과정을 거쳐 이루어진다. 그 중에서 그의 가장 큰 비인간적 행위는 그의 아들 Charles Bon이 검은 피를 지녔다는 이유로 아들로 인정조차 하지 않은 채, 저버린 일이다. 또한 Henry 역시 Sutpen과 똑 같은 이유에서 그의 형제를 거부하고, 흑백잡혼을 막기 위해 살해까지 하게 된다. Henry의 이러한 행동은 남부사회가 요구하는 행동이었고, 그는 사회가 지시하는 행위를 하게 된 것이다. 결국, Henry가 저지르는 행위를 통해, Faulkner는 남부의 비인간적 행위를 강렬히 비난하게 된다. 그리고, 이들 두 작품에서 작가는 남부와 남부인의 이야기를 하고 있지만 한 인간이 극단적인 추상화의 개념에 따라 희생된다는 점에서 모든 인간에게 보편적 의미를 줄 수 있을 것이다.
