Abstract

Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695) is one of the representative composers in England who was active in the late 17th century. He has left numerous musical works and concentrated on the traditional English polyphony. His opera "Dido & Aeneas" shows his unique mode of expression embracing the Italian vocal style, the French instrumental style and English polyphonic style. "Dido & Aeneas" is significantly menaingful in the history of the English music in a sense that it is a complete opera adopting English language to its libretto. In this study, we have surveyed the musical construction of "Dido & Aeneas", and characteristic features and techniques employed in it. "Dido & Aeneas" adopts a small scale opera form. Nevertheless, the opera gives a maximum dramatic effect by harmonizing properly all the applicable musical materials, rhythms of voices and emotional changes contained in the words with the pathetic aspects of the melody. In general, "Dido & Aeneas" contains long melodic lines expanding the 4 measure phrase. Such an attempt widened, at that time, the possibility of a new scope of expression. And it developed simple, bright and cheerful melodies like English folk songs by employing techniques such as repetition of motive, sequence, the imitative use of a figure, alternation, contrary motion and arpeggio. In the aspect of harmony, "Dido & Aeneas" uses bold progressions of dissonances including tritones and chromaticism. It makes the expression dramatically strong. And the frequent usages of false relations show the composing habits of the 16th-17th centuries. Regular & irregular rhythms are used in accordance with the text. Especially the use of the distinctive dotted rhythms gives realistic senses with expression of allusive cognition and scene. The ground bass used by Purcell gives an abundant effect to the melodic progression. The chromatic downward melodies are employed as a method of describing the pathetic emotion. One of the important contributions of Purcell is that he adopted English words as the libretto of his work "Dido & Aeneas". Strong accents and fast construction in the English words are well controlled, and melodies are applied to the text in a way that the consonant syllables should be free from the rhythmic bondage. As a result, melodies were created, moving freely and naturally to be harmonious with the accent, tempo and passions. Thus Purcell properly combined the unique English polyphonic style and the continental style in his great work "Dido and Aeneas".;Henry Purcell(1659∼1695)은 17세기 후반에 활약한 영국의 대표적인 작곡가이다. 그는 영국의 전통적인 다성음악에 이태리 성악양식과 불란서 기악양식을 포용한 자신의 새로운 독특한 표현양식으로 opera<Dido & Aeneas>를 작곡하였다. <Dido & Aeneas>는 전체가 음악으로 구성된 순수한 opera로써 영국 음악사상 의의가 크다. 본 논문에서는 <Dido & Aeneas>의 음악적 구성과 작품에서 사용된 기법 및 특징적인 요소를 고찰하였다. <Dido & Aeneas>의 음악적 구성은 소규모 opera의 형식을 취하고 있다. 그러나 이런 한정된 수단에 그가 적용시킬 수 있는 모든 음악적 소재와 노래의 리듬, 말에 내재되어 있는 감정의 변화를 선율과 잘 조화시켜 최대의 극적인 효과를 올리고 있다. Purcell은 <Dido & Aeneas>에서 일반적으로 4조절악구의 길이를 넘어서 형성되는 선율선을 만들어내었다. 이러한 시도는 당시에 새로운 작곡의 가능성과 표현 영역을 넓혀주는 것이었다. 그리고 이것을 동기의 반복, 모방, 교차, 반진행, 아르페지오 등의 기법을 사용하여 간결하면서도 밝고 쾌활한 영국 민요적인 선율로 전개하고 있다. 화성면에서는 3온음(tritone)을 포함한 불협화음의 대담한 진행과 불규칙한 반음계적 수법을 사용하였다. 그것은 극적으로 표현을 강하게 해준다. 또한 빈번하게 나타나는 對斜(false relation)는 당시(16∼17세기)의 작곡관습에 의한 것이다. 리듬들은 규칙적인 리듬과 가사의 뜻에 맞추어 움직이는 불규칙적인 형태로 조성되는데, 이런 리듬들은 다양성을 보이면서 자연스럽게 교체되고 있다. 특히 특징적인 붓점 리듬들을 사용하여 암시적인 인식과 장면을 표시함으로써 현실 감각을 나타내주고 있다. Purcell이 사용한 ground bass는 음악의 진행에 풍부한 효과를 주고 있다. 그는 비탄의 감정을 묘사하는 수법으로써 반음계적 하행선율로 된 ground bass를 사용하고 있다. <Dido & Aeneas>에서 특히 중요한 것은 작곡에 있어서 영어가사를 적절하게 채택한 점이다. 영어의 어휘가 가지는 강세(accent)와 빠른 구조의 특징을 잘 조절하여 자음으로 된 음절에는 리듬의 구속을 받지 않도록 하는 방법으로 가사에 선율을 붙였다. 그 결과 강세, 속도, 감정에 잘 융합되는 자유스럽고 자연스러운 움직임을 보이는 선율악구를 만들어냈다. 이와 같이 Purcell은 영국 고유의 다성음악 양식에 당시 영국에서 유행하던 대륙의 음악양식들을 잘 융합하여 자신의 뛰어난 독창성으로 opera<Dido & Aeneas>를 창작하였다. 그는 이 작품을 통해서 유기적인 구성과 균형의 감각을 보여줌으로써 영국음악에 새로운 양식을 남겼다.
