영화 <현기증>의 복식과 색채 상징성

Abstract

본 연구는 피에르 부왈로(Pierre Boileau)와 토마스 나르스작(Thomas Narcejac) 원작의 소설「D'entre les Morts」(1954)를 영상화한 영화<현기증(Vertigo)>(1958)을 통해서, 영화 주인공 Scottie와 동일인물인 Madeleine, Judy 그리고 Midge Wood의 복식과 색채 이미지를 연구하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 방법은 영화<현기증>의 원작 소설 「D'entre les Morts」를 바탕으로 등장인물(Scottie, Madeleine, Judy, Midge Wood)의 이미지를 살펴보았고, 영화<현기증>의 DVD와 국내외 문헌자료, 신문, 잡지, 인터넷 등의 기사 및 시각자료를 중심으로 등장인물의 복식과 색채 이미지, 그리고 배경에 표현된 색채 상징성을 고찰하였다. 원작의 색채에 따른 상징적 이미지에 관한 직접적인 언급이나 표현은 없었으나, 극이 전개되는 상황을 통해 색채에 따른 상징적 이미지를 알 수 있었다. 첫 번째로, 등장인물에 표현된 복식과 색채 상징성을 살펴보면, 스코티의 이미지는 신체적 제약-고소공포증으로 인한 현기증-에서 오는 불안함을 나타내기 위해 회색 싱글 브레스트 플란넬 슈트가 이용되었다. 그의 불안함과 사건을 해결하지 않고 관찰만 하는 모습을 나타냈다. 또한 마들렌의 죽음이후 그의 마들렌을 잃은 상실감, 우울한 심리는 파란색 스웨터와 슈트를 통해 표현되었다. 의상에 있어서는 싱글 브레스트 슈트와 스웨터, 홈부르크 해트 등으로 스코티를 표현했다. 동일인물인 마들렌과 주디의 이미지로 사용된 녹색은 동일인물 임을 인식시켰으며, 붉은색 배경과의 대비를 통해 마들렌을 신비화시켜 스코티에게 환상적이고 몽환적인 이미지로 각인시켰다. 녹색은 또한 스코티를 향한 주디의 사랑과 마들렌의 환영이미지를 표현해냈다. 복식을 살펴보면, 녹색 라운드 네크라인의 풀오버 스웨터, 녹색 도트 무늬의 플랫칼라 블라우스, 빅 벨트, 풀 스커트 등 디테일이 있는 의상을 착용하여 그녀의 사랑을 표현했다. 반면, 흰색과 검은색의 대비, 회색 세퍼레이트 슈트, 검은색 드레스는 그녀의 부정된 모습을 표현했다. 미치우드의 이미지는 파스텔 톤의 색채로 마들렌과 다른 그녀의 현실적이고 순수한 이미지를 나타냈다. 그녀의 의상표현은 마들렌, 주디와 달리 디테일의 변화 없이, 색채의 변화로 그녀의 심리를 표현했다. 그녀는 파스텔톤의 블라우스를 착용하여 그녀의 현실적이고 순수한 성격을 표현했으며, 다홍색의 블라우스로 마들렌에 대한 강한 질투를 표현했다. 두 번째로, 영화 속 배경으로 색채 상징성을 표출했다. 파란색 배경의 지붕이나 수도원 종탑장면은 스코티의 고소공포증으로 인한 누군가의 죽음을 예고함과 동시에 그의 우울한 심리를 상징했다. 스코티의 아파트나 엠파이어 호텔은 가상적인 존재인 마들렌을 상징함과 동시에 그녀가 재창조되는 공간으로 녹색 배경색채를 통해 표현되었다. 이상에서 살펴본 바와 같이 영화 속에서 표현된 주인공의 복식과 색채는 이미지에서 우선적으로 지각되는 시각요소로서 강한 설득력을 가지는 있음을 재인식하고, 나아가 영화복식에 다양한 색채로 표현되는 복식과 그 이미지에 관한 연구가 앞으로 더욱더 깊이 탐구해야 할 대상이 되어야 할 것이다.;The purpose of this study is to investigate costume and color image in Scottie, Madeleine, Judy and Midgewood through the movie <Vertigo>(1958), which was represented in <D'entre les Morts>(1954) in Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac. For the research method, it was examined images of Scottie, Madeleine, Judy, and Midgewood on the basis of <D'entre les Morts>, which is the original work of a film <Vertigo>, Also it was considered coloring images expressed in costumes of characters, its coloring images, and background based on articles and photos in DVD, literary material at home and abroad, newspapers, magazines, and internet of a film <Vertigo>. Although direct mention or expression on symbolic color image did not appeared in the original work, symbolic color image based on color was recognized through the situation developed in a play. First, given examined costume and color image, which were expressed in characters, Scottie’s image was expressed with gray color in an image of leadenness and character that only observes the case without solving it in a bid to indicate leadenness that is caused by vertigo due to physical restriction-acrophobia. Also, following Madeleine’s death, his sense of loss for Madeleine and gloomy mental state was expressed in blue color. In terms of clothes, Scottie was expressed with cardigan and Homburg hat based on single breast suit. Green, which was used for the image of Madeleine and Judy who are the same character. Contrast in green and red, allowed her to be mysterious, and made Scottie imprinted the fantastic and visionary image of Madeleine. Green also expressed her nervous psychology, mystery and hiding a secret. In terms of clothing expression, her anxious psychology was expressed by wearing clothes with details such as pull-over sweater in green round neckline, flat-color blouse in green-dotted pattern, big belt, and full skirt. On the other hand, contrast in red and black, gray separates suit, and black dress expressed her dishonesty. Aiming to express Midge Wood’s image, her realistic and daily image different from Madeleine were represented using pastel color. As for the expression of her clothes, her mental state was expressed by giving a change in color, without a change in details, differently from Madeleine and Judy. Her realistic and routine personality was expressed by wearing light yellow blouse, and through deep-red blouse, strong jealousy against Madeleine was shown. And, she expressed apology and gloomy mental state toward Scottie with soft blue blouse. Second, its image was expressed through color image that was expressed in the background amid a film. On the scene of the roof in the blue background or of a bell tower in a monastery, his gloomy mental state was displayed simultaneously with foretelling somebody’s death from Scottie’s acrophobia. Scottie’s apartment in green background or empire hotel symbolized Madeleine, which is a virtual existence, and at the same time, expressed as space where she is recreated. Based on the above results, a hero’s costume and color image, which were expressed amid a film, were indicated by placing a great deal of weight on a visual effect rather than being conveyed through speech or clothes’ shape. Like this, with recognizing that color has strong persuasive power as a visual element in modern society, it is thought to be significant to conduct a follow-up research on costumes and its image that is expressed in various color application to present a new direction on costume for films for the future.
