Illustration에서 내러티브의 효율적 전개를 위한 다중공간구성에 관한 연구

Abstract

일러스트레이션(illustration)은 어원상 ''to make light' 즉 ‘빛을 비추다’라는 의미를 가지고 있다. 즉 실제로 보이지 않는 대상 혹은 감정이나 사상을 재해석하여 시각적으로 명확히 재현하는 것을 의미한다. 더불어 현대적 개념의 일러스트레이션이란 순수 회화나 단순한 설명적인 그림이 아니고 또한 그래픽 디자인처럼 기능적 측면만을 가진 것도 아닌, 전달하려는 내용을 가진 목표 지향적 그림으로서 또는 시각 언어이자 커뮤니케이션 예술로서 그 자체가 독자적인 시각예술의 한 장르를 형성해 가고 있다. 또한 일러스트레이션은 최근에 와서 그림책이라는 출판매체를 통해 급격히 성장해가고 있으며 그 시장도 점차 커지고 있다. 이제 그림책 일러스트레이션은 글의 보조 역할만하는 ‘조각그림’ 이라는 작은 개념에서 벗어나 그림책 일러스트레이션만의 독자적이고 전문적인 장르로 자리매김해야 할 것이다. 그림책 속의 그림에서 독자들은 내러티브와 풍부한 정보를 제공 받을 수 있어야함은 물론 시각적인 즐거움도 누릴 수 있어야한다. 연구자는 이 논문에서 그림책 일러스트레이션의 중요한 기능인 내러티브를 효율적으로 전달하고 독자들이 시각예술로서의 일러스트레이션에 대해 가지는 기대를 충족시킬 수 있는 한 방법으로 ‘다중공간(多重空間)’의 구성을 제안하고자 한다. 그림책에서 글과 그림이 가지는 서사성을 연구하고 그를 통해 그림책 일러스트레이션의 ‘다중공간’을 통한 내러티브 전개를 보여주고자 시도하였다. 먼저 본문의 Ⅱ장에서는 일러스트레이션에서의 내러티브 전개를 설명하기 위해 우선 그림책에서의 글과 그림의 여러 가지 관계를 문헌 연구를 통해 밝히고, 글과 그림 양자 모두를 통해 내러티브가 전개되는 그림을 볼 때의 '그림읽기'의 개념에 대해 알아보았다. 이어 그림은 사건이나 상황을 시간과 공간 그리고 등장인물 등을 통해 장면으로 표현해내는 시각예술이므로 그림책 일러스트레이션에서 시간과 공간에 대한 의미를 고찰하였고, 다중공간의 구성 개념을 밝히기 위해 시각적으로 내러티브를 전개하는 대표적인 방법 중의 하나인 만화식 구성에 대해 살펴보았다. Ⅲ장에서는 다중공간(多重空間)의 개념에 대해 정리하고, 다중공간 속 각 장면을 구성하는 시간과 공간을 한 화면에 조화시키는 다중공간 구성이 그림책 일러스트레이션의 내러티브 전개에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴보고자 했다. 다른 회화작품이나 현대 그림책 일러스트레이션 중 다중공간을 형성하고 있는 사례의 연구를 통해 다중공간이 가지는 의미를 살펴보고 다중공간이 내러티브의 효과적인 전달을 위해 유용함을 지적한다. 마지막으로 위의 연구를 바탕으로 하여 대중에게 많이 알려진 Lewis Carroll의 ‘이상한 나라의 앨리스’와 Hans Christian Andersen의 ‘나이팅게일’ 두 이야기의 관련 일러스트레이션의 예를 통해 일러스트레이션에서 다중공간을 이용한 내러티브의 효율적인 전개를 연구해 보고자 하였다. 모든 그림책의 그림은 글과 함께 내러티브의 전달을 목적으로 한다. 현재의 그림책에 있어서 글과 그림은 상호보완적인 관계에 있다. 단순히 그림이 글의 보조역할 만을 하는 과거의 그림책과는 달리 최근의 그림책에서의 그림은 내러티브 전달에 보다 적극적인 역할을 한다. 본 연구자는 다중공간의 구성을 통해 그림책 일러스트레이션이 내러티브의 전개를 좀 더 효율적으로 도울 수 있기를 바란다.;'Illustration' has the meaning 'to make light' etymologically. It means that illustration is the visual representation of invisible objects, emotions and thoughts through clarification and reinterpretation. Illustration in modern sense differs from painting proper, simple explanatory picture, or graphic design work of practical function and has come to form a genuine genre of visual art as a visual language, a communicative art and a goal-oriented work with significant contents. These days Illustration is on abrupt growth in virtue of illustrated storybook and the market is still expanding by degrees. Now it is required for storybook illustration to come out of the limited range of inserted cut which attends on main texts and to be classified as a specialistic genre. Illustration in storybooks should present not only narratives and plentiful information but also visual enjoyment for readers. In this essay, I would like to suggest the concept, the composition of 'multidimensional space' in picture as a way of conveying narratives effectively, which is one of important functions of illustration, and of meeting readers' expectation for appreciating illustration as a visual art. I have attempted to show narrative development by multidimensionally composed illustrations in storybooks, investigating the ways both text and picture contain and develop narratives. First, in section Ⅱ of this essay, in order to explane the development of narratives in illustration I looked into various relations of texts and pictures on relevant literatures and took notice of the concept of 'picture-reading', which is a sort of interpreting images of the illustration with narrative development by text and picture together. Then I considered the significance of time and space in storybook illustrations, for picture is a visual art presenting events and states of affairs composed of time, space and characters through scenes. And to make clear the concept of 'multidimensional space' composition, I gave attention to frame-cartoon composition, one of principal ways of developing narratives. In section Ⅲ, I gave an account of the concept of 'multidimensional space' and investigated the effect which multidimensional space composition has on storybook illustration by way of arranging time and space elements constituting each scenes of various dimensions in single picture plane. And I explained the meaning of multidimensional space examining other pictures and examples featuring multidimensional aspect among recent storybook illustrations and pointed out that multidimensional space is available to tell narratives effectively. Finally, on the basis of research in the preceding part I have attempted to illustrate the effective development of narratives using multidimensional space in illustrations picturing 'Alice in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll and 'Nightingale' by Hans Christian Anderson, which are familiar to us. All storybook illustrations and texts aim at telling narratives. Text and illustration are complementaries for each other these days. Recent storybook Illustration plays more active and important role for narratives while that of the past remained only subsidiary to text. I hope the composition of 'multidimensional space' can contribute to manage narratives in storybook illustration.
