"Neumeister Collection"에 수록된 J. S. Bach의 Organ Chorales에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 1984년 최초로 발견된 "Neumeister Collection"에 수록되어 있는 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750)의 organ chorale 작품들을 소개하여 이를 형식적으로 소개하여 이를 형식적으로 분석함으로써 J. S. Bach의 초기 organ chorale 작품들의 음악적 특성을 고찰하고 그 이후에 작곡된 그의 모든 organ chorale 작품들의 기초자료가 되었음을 이해하는데 목적을 두었다. 이 작품집은 Johann Gottfried Neumeister (1757 - 1840)에 의하여 편집되었으며 이름도 "Neumeister Collection"이라 붙여졌다. 이는 Yale University에 있는 John Herrick Jackson 음악도서관에서 Christoph Wolff에 의해 발견되었다. 여기에는 44개의 다른 작곡가들의 organ chorale 작품들과 38개의 J. S. Bach의 작품을 합하여 총 82개의 작품이 수록되어 있다. "Neumeister Collection"에 수록된 J. S. Bach의 organ chorale 작품들은 약 1710년에 작곡된 그의 초기 작품으로, 이태리, 프랑스 악파의 영향 뿐 아니라 Bach 이전의 작곡가들, 즉 Scheidt, Pachelbel, Tunder, Buxtehude, Bo¨hm 등과 같은 북부, 중·남부 독일악파의 영향을 받아 그들의 작품을 모방하여 음악적인 특성과 양식을 작품속에 담아내고 있다. 그래서 선모방, 건반에 나타나는 빠른 진행(passage)나 울림(echo) 효과, 같은 음형의 반복으로 곡의 통일성을 주기도 하고 한 작품속에서 다양한 음형을 사용하여 여러 부분(section)으로 구분하는 등의 특징을 보여주고 있다. 또한 이 작품들은 "Orgelbu¨chlein"과 유사하게 각 절기에 따라 작곡 되었을 뿐 아니라 일반적인 chorale 선율로도 작곡되어 있는데, 특히 죽음을 주제로 하는 chorale 선율을 사용하여 장례식을 위한 작품들이 많이 수록되어 있으며, 그 당시 자주 사용되지 않던 chorale 선율로도 작곡한 작품이 있다. 형식면에서 보면, 짧고 단순한 곡들이나 chorale prelude, chorale fugue, fughetta, ornamented chorale, chorale canon, 선모방(pre-imitation)형태, 4성부 화성적인 형식, 그리고 구조적으로 모호하게 변화하는 형식 등 다양한 형식을 구사하고 있다. 38개의 J. S. Bach 의 작품 중 3개는 "Orgelbu¨chlein"과 다른 chorale작품집을 통해 이미 알려져 있어서, 본 논문에서는 그 외에 35개의 작품만을 다루었다. 작품의 형식을 연구하는데 있어서 John David Peterson이 분류한 방법과 본 연구자의 분류방법을 비교하여 분석함으로써 여러 형식으로 작곡되었을 뿐 아니라 한 작품 속에서 두 세가지 형식을 함께 사용하여 다양한 양식을 보여주고 있음을 증명할 수 있었다. 바로크의 거장인 J. S. Bach 새로운 organ chorales 의 발견은 음악사적으로 볼 때 발견 그 자체로도 큰 의의가 있으며 J. S. Bach의 초기 발전상을 이해하는데 중요한 자료가 된다는 면에서 가치가 크다고 할 수 있다. Bach는 이러한 초기작품을 통해 여러 다양한 형식을 시도해 봄으로써, 그 이후에 작곡된 organ chorales에서 좀더 성숙하고 완성도가 높은 작품을 작곡할 수 있었으리라 추측된다. 초보자 뿐만 아니라 교회의 오르가니스트들이 예배시간에 사용하기 위해 작곡된 이 작품을 통해 앞으로 organ chorale 음악에 대해 좀더 깊은 관심과 연구를 하여 오르가니스트로서 교회예배시 연주되는 chorale 음악의 사용에 많은 도움이 되었으면 한다.;This thesis analyzes and introduces the Johann Sebastian Bach's organ chorales, gathered in the "Neumeister Collection", which was h t discovered in 1984. The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the musical characteristics of the early organ chorales in order to appreciate all those organ chorales which were composed by J. S. Bach (1685-1750). The "Neumeister Collection", which was compiled by Johann Gottfried Neumeister (1757-1840), was discovered by Christoph Wolff at John Herrick Jackson Music Library, Yale University. This collection comprises 82 organ chorales, of which 38 were composed by J. S. Bach while the rest are works by other composers. Among Bach's 38 organ chorales are three works which had well known already through "Orgelbu¨chlein" and other chorale collections. Therefore, in this thesis, the form and analysis of the rest of the 35 works only were studied by using John David Peterson's classification method. The J. S. Bach's organ chorale, written in the "Neumeister Collection", are early works and are considered to have been composed about in 1710 under the influence of Italian and French schools as well as German composers previous to Bach, such as Scheit, Pachelbel, Tunder, Buxtehude, and B o h from the southern, middle, and northern schools of Germany. Bach's early chorales seem to be in imitation of those composers. Thus, they display several features such as the fast passage on a manuel, echo effects, repetition of the same sound patterns, and division into many sections by using the various melodic phrases. Moreover, they are not only composed analogous to "Orgelbu¨chleh" according to passing seasons of the liturgical year, but also composed to general chorale melodies, in particular many of those concerned with death. At that time, some of them had not often been performed. Looking at their form, they are short, simple melodies, but utilize 4-part harmonic form, chorale fugue, fughetta, ornamented chorale, chorale canon, the pre-imitation patterns, chorale prelude, and other such varied form. The discovery of organ chorales composed by J. S. Bach, who was the great master of Baroque music, is quite meaningful by itself in the history of music, and it could be of great valuable in providing important materials for understanding the early development of J. S. Bach. We realize that, by attempting these various diverse forms, J. S. Bach was enabled to compose his work mature and perfect late organ chorales. Finally, we recognize that if we study more deeply the organ chorales with continuous and intense concern, we can properly use chorales at a church service as organists.
