최명익 소설의 시간과 공간 연구

Abstract

The aim of this research is to evaluate the space and time imagination of 최명익(崔明翊)'s novel. The object of this study includes his novels that had been published before and after Korean war. According to the special situation: Korea is the divided country, the studies on 최명익 (1903∼ ? )'s novel have been limited . So most of the researches has object of novels published before Korean War. This study is focused on finding the connection of 최명익's novels which is written before and after Korean war. Chapter Ⅱ examined the time structure and space where the main character wants to get. Time and space structure is divided three parts, 1st is regular time structure (from past to now), and character want to go to outside. The 2nd time structure is passed through stream consciousness of main character.(anarchrony) and the main character intends to go to inside or outside, 3rd time and space structure show anarchrony and main character wants to go to mediate space. Chapter Ⅲ analyze relationship between character's personality and time, space 1st type of character dreams a strange place and they have an open mind. The more they would go to outside, the more their space became smaller, and relationship has a problems. The 2nd type of character is also intend to go to outside to overcame difficulties. However they could not also get the answer, their communication with others has a much noise. At last they are in the situation, which they do not live nor die. The 3rd type of character is a person in the road. They miss the past time and always come back to the mediate space. They are at regular intervals with others; even they walk on a way day after day, so they can have many chances to meet strange people. Chapter Ⅳ reveals the whole meaning of time and space and close connection between time and space in 최명익's novel. To show the reason why future-oriented and open minded person get the negative result, why past-oriented and narrow minded person, I applied the theory of desire, especially triangle structure of Girard, Rene to the desire of the characters. There is an antagonism between, a circle structure and lineage structure in time and space of 최명익's novel. This antagonism means also between past-now and now future. Above ail, circle structure has a water image of life and revival and lineage structure has a fire image of destruction and extermination, following as the division of chapter Ⅱ and Ⅲ, it can be divided three parts. One is "secret place where a person become a victim", the other is " discord between the body and the spirit", the other is " Getting the freedom through repetition and circulation;". Even it looks like a closed society or person, it means a circulation for getting the freedom. "A- Secret place where a person becomes a victim": it shows that circular world assimilate into the lineage world. As the lineage rule, they meet the death. Also lineage world reveal the violence of new stuff; car, train, highway etc. In other words it makes human beings to be material, human personality and their individuality be destructed by totalitarianism.(or imperialism). The street is bright even in the night. Although there looks like a paradise, there is a place where is full of oppression. "B- Discord between the body and the spirit": it has a trouble between circular world, world of Books and lineage world , world of Money. There is a mediator " Beer" between the two values. They want to find the world of book, past but they become materialistic. As the result their spirit is dead even their body is alive. "C- Getting the freedom through repetition and circulation;" : they want to go back to past and also intend to go to inside through mediate space(read, door, window, etc) Especially, "섬월이(1963)" shows that only harmony and reconciliation of circulation can make people have freedom. Mediator of A and B is a new things from outside: train, car and highway but mediator of C is a old stuff from inside; narrow old road, gate etc. new and splendid things lead the person to the extinctive and destructive space however poor old mediator lead the people to the revive and harmonious way. Like this there is a reverse of good and bad in the 최명익's novel.: old and new, magnificent and poor, freedom and oppression, open and close. 최명익 would have reflected the times(1910-1945) when every things were controlled through reverse of meanings. There were armed aggressions under the name of 'communication, friendly relation and protection'. 최명익 wanted to reveal the contradictive situation through reverse of meanings.;본 논문은 최명익의 해방 전 후 소설의 시간과 공간을 분석하였다. 공간과 시간은 한 인물의 행동이 변화하는 공간이자 작가의 세계관을 반영하고, 소설을 분석하고 이해할 수 있는 기본 단위로 작용한다. 최명익 텍스트는 '노방의 타인' 의식이라는 비관적이고 염세적인 텍스트로 이해되면서 현실 참여가 부족한 텍스트로 평가받거나 /내/ 공간 지향은 부활을 꿈꾸는 적극적인 행위의 또 다른 모습이라고 논의되어 왔다. 그러나 대부분의 논의가 '자의식 과잉자의 소설' 혹은 '시대 정신의 결여'라는 부정적인 결론을 내리고 있다. 또 한편으로는 해방을 기점으로 모더니즘 계열의 심리주의 소설이라는 평가와 동반자적 소설이라는 다소 양분된 결론을 내리며, 그의 해방 전 후 소설의 연계점을 찾는 노력은 이렇다할 성과를 보지 못했다. 본 논문에서는 단편소설 「섬월이」를 통해서 해방 전 후 소설의 연계성을 찾아내고자 했다. 또한 시간과 공간의 구조를 통해, 최명익 텍스트의 긍정적인 면을 드러내고 그의 텍스트가 부정적인 의미로 해석되는 이유를 밝히고자 하였다. Ⅱ장에서는 시간의 구조와 각 인물이 지향하는 공간을 살펴보았다. 공간과 시간을 최소한의 유의미한 단위로 나눈 후, 공간의 이동 방향과 시간의 구조를 분석한다. 시간은 이야기 시간과 서술시간으로 나누어서 살펴보았는데, 크게 3가지로 나뉘어졌다. 1.과거에서 현재로 순차적인 시간 흐름을 보이며 /외/공간을 지향하는 것, 2.과거와 현재가 인물의 의식의 흐름을 따라 진행하면서 공간은 /외/공간 혹은 /내/ 공간을 지향하는 것, 3. 인물의 의식의 흐름에 따라 과거와 현재가 반복 교차되고, 공간은 매개공간을 지향하는 구조이다. 2와 3은 시간구조에 있어 심한 아나크로니 현상(무시간성)을 보여주었다. Ⅲ장에서는 Ⅱ장의 구분을 근거로 하여, 인물의 성격과 시간과 공간의 관계를 분석하였다. 이를 위해서 야콥슨의 의사소통에 관한 연구와 비언어적 의사소통에 관한 연구를 기반으로 하였다. 첫 번째 인물은 미지의 공간을 꿈꾸거나 미래와 현재에 충실한 인물들이었다. 그러나 이들이 /외/ 공간으로 나아갈수록 이들의 관계는 단절되고, 공간은 작아졌다. 두 번째 인물은 부정적인 현재의 공간을 벗어나기 위해서 /외/ 공간 혹은 /내/ 공간으로 나아가는 인물이었다. 그러나 이들 또한 타인과의 소통이 계속 미끄러지거나, 현재의 삶을 벗어날 수 있는 해답을 찾지 못하고 이러지도 저러지도 못한 채 산 것도 죽은 것도 아닌 상태에 부딪히게 된다. 세 번째는 길 위의 인물로 이들은 과거를 지향하며 다시 매개공간으로 돌아온다. 이들은 매개공간을 매일 같이 오고가지만, 타인과의 소통에 어느 정도 거리를 두고 있으며 사람에 대해서 관심을 두지 않는다. 잠시동안 타인 혹은 길 밖의 공간에 관심을 갖더라도 다시 길 위로 되돌아온다. Ⅳ장에서는 이제까지의 분석을 종합하여, 최명익 소설에 나타난 시간과 공간의 총체적 의미를 드러내었다. 미래지향적인 인물이 비극적인 결말을 맺고, 폐쇄적인 인물이 긍정적인 결론을 맺는 이유를 밝히기 위해서 각 인물이 지향하는 욕망을 르네 지라르의 욕망의 삼각구조로 분석하였다. 최명익 소설의 시간과 공간은 순환되는 원형의 구조와 직선의 구조가 서로 대립하는데 이는 신작로와 옛 길, 과거-현재, 현재-미래의 대립을 의미한다. 또한 원과 직선은 생명의 물과 소멸과 파괴의 불 이미지로 나타났다. 이러한 의미구조를 바탕으로 하며 2장과 3장에 의한 분류에 따라 A,개인이 희생되는 비밀의 공간 B.육체와 정신의 불화 C. 반복과 순환을 통한 자유획득으로 분석되었다. 즉 폐쇄적으로 보일 지라도 그것은 자유획득을 위한 순환으로 이해할 수 있다. A의 경우, 직선과 원의 세계가 만나지만 직선의 세계에 원의 세계가 동화하는 모습을 보여주었다. 따라서 이들은 직선의 법칙을 따라서 순환과 재생이 아닌 죽음을 맞이하는 결과를 낳는다. 또한 적선의 공간은 신작로에서 기차, 자동차등의 신 문물의 공간으로 확장되면서, 새로운 것의 폭력성을 드러낸다. 즉 기차 자동차 신작로 등은 인간을 사물화하고, 집단과 전체라는 이름 하에 인간성과 개성이 파괴되는 공간임을 알 수 있다. 또한 이들은 반짝반짝 빛나거나 혹은 밤에도 화려하게 빛나는 불의 공간으로 형상화되면서, 겉으로는 화려한 이상형으로 보이지만 그 내면은 억압과 폭력이 존재하는 공간임을 드러낸다. B는 과거로 돌아가려는 순환하는 순환의 세계와 /외/ 공간으로 향하려는 직선의 세계가 만나 갈등하는 양상을 보여준다. 또한 순환의 세계는 '책'으로 직선의 세계는 '돈'의 가치로 나타나는데, 책과 돈의 사이에는 인간간의 화합과 또한 폭력이라는 이중성을 가진 술이라는 매개항이 존재했다. 그러나 이들은 과거 즉 책의 세계를 찾으려 하지만, 현실에 적응하기 위해서 혹은 자신의 약한 의지로 인해 점차로 직선의 공간 즉 '돈' 이라는 물질중심의 가치체계로 나아갔다. 따라서 이들은 육체는 살아있지만 정신은 죽은, 정신과 육체가 화합하지 못한 상태를 보여준다. C는 과거로 돌아가려는 순환의 세계와 매개공간을 통해 내공간을 지향하고 더 나아가 내공간을 더 좋은 곳으로 만들려고 하는 의지를 보여주는 원의 세계로 분석되었다. 특히 「섬월이」는 단순한 /외/ 공간 지향이 아닌 원형의 순환과 조화만이 /내/,/외/를 조화롭게 변화시킬 수 있으며 진정한 자유를 획득할 수 있음을 보여주며./외/ 공간의 친교적인 행위는 공간침범과 폭력을 내재한다는 것을 드러낸다. 반면 무덤을 향한 매개공간은 재생과 부활이 가능함을 보여준다. A와 B의 매개공간이 기차, 자동차 그리고 신작로라는 새로운 문물이었던 데 반해서 C에서의 매개공간은 옛 길과 대문이라는 과거의 공간으로 나타난다. 새로운 것이 직선의 공간으로 언젠가는 끝에 부딪혀 죽음과 소멸을 맞이한다면 옛 길과 대문이라는 다소 초라하고 과거를 상징하는 매개공간은 자유로운 미래와 연결되어 있음을 의미한다. 이와 같이 최명익의 텍스트에서 새것과 헌 것, 그리고 화려함과 초라함, 자유와 억압, 열림과 닫힘의 의미는 전도된다. 최명익은 모든 상황이 통제되는 시대에서 이렇듯 거꾸로 말하기를 통해서 억압된 시대를 반영하려고 하였음을 알 수 있다. '소통과 친교 그리고 보호'라는 이름 하에 침략과 약탈이 난무하던 시대상황을 최명익은 거꾸로 말하기를 통해서 핍진하게 그려내는 것이다. 그리고 이러한 움직임은 그의 해방 이후, 일제시대를 배경으로 한 소설 「섬월이」에서는 보다 직설적으로 드러난다.
