일상생활방법론(Ethnomethodology)에 관한 연구

Abstract

This thesis deals with ethnomethodology with a special emphasis on its nature and diversity in order to delineate its importance in the field of sociology. The second chapther of this work investigates the methodology together with its critique of positivism. Basically, it is argued that the fundamental nature of ethnomethodology lies in its practical approach, as it provides with basic resources for the sociological research in the realm of everyday life, and as it formulates an independent and special area of inquiry. Ethnomethodology explains how everyday activities formulate the individuals' way of life, their daily life. Their practical life is based on reflexive, indexical, practical reasoning. Their activities are seen as bound to the situation which itself is changeable by practicality. In this respect, ethonomethodology by way of the method of "breaching" the norms probes how everyday activities are normally formulated and maintained in balance. The third chapter of this work deals with the theoretical aspects of ethnomethodology, for instance, its principles of reflexivity and indexicality, In this respect, it should be emphasized that ethnomethodology attempts to explain society in terms of the interactions achieved among the societal member. Ethnomethodology deals with such empirical issues as important to sociology as deviance and control, education, organizations, and other decision making processes by analyzing the everyday activities of societal members within various institutional settings. Thus, this thesis attempts to show the sociological meaning and implications of ethnometholdology by condusively overviewing the ressults of such empirical analyses. The fourth chapter of this work brings to light the Cognitive Sociology formulated by Aaron V. Cicourel in order to demonstrate its relevance for the study of the socialization processes geared to the maintenance of social structure. Finally this thesis examines conversational analysis as a particularly interesting research paradigm which belongs to ethnomethodology. This chapter makes attempt to delineate the usefulness of conversational analysis for the study of conversation process and communication. In conclusion, this thesis examines the limitations and the strength of ethnomethodology, arguing that ethnomethodology may become more useful for sociological study of human society.;본 논문은 새로운 사회학적 시각으로서의 「일상생활방법론」이 사회학에서 차지하는 위치가 무엇인가를 알아보기 위해 이 학문적 입장의 성격과 다양성을 규명하려는 의도로 쓰여졌다. 이러한 의도하에 이글은 「일상생활방법론」의 방법론적 기초를 실증주의 방법론과의 관계하에 논의하였고, 이러한 논의를 통하여 일상생활방법론」의 이론적 함의를 도출하였다. 일상 생활의 영역들을 사회학적 연구의 자원으로서, 그리고 하나의 독특한 독립된 연구 영역으로서 <재발견>한 「일상생활방법론」의 기본 성격은 실천적이라는 것이다. 즉, 사람들이 일상적인 생활 세계 안에서 일상적인 활동을 실제 어떻게 꾸려가는가를 설명하고자 하는 「일상생활방법론」은 인간 활동이 성찰적이고 지표적인 실제적 사고에 의해 이루어지며 따라서 그들의 활동은 상황에 구속받음과 동시에 상황 자체의 변화를 시도할 수 있는 실천적 성격을 띠는 것으로 파악한다. 이러한 관점에서 「일상생활방법론」은 사회 구조와 질서가 일상 생활 안에서 어떻게 안?壅품?유지되는가의 문제를 실천적인 차원에서 다루기 위해 규범의 실험적 파괴(breaching)라는 독특한 전략을 취하기도 한다. 「일상생활방법론」은 사회 성원들간의 상호 작용적 성취에 의 해 사회가 꾸려진다고 보아 다양한 제도적 배경 하에서 그 관련 성원들이 과연 어떻게 그들의 일상 활동을 꾸려 나가는가에 주목하여 활동을 전개해왔다. 어점에 유념하여, 이 논문은 이러한 이론적 작업의 결과들을 분석함으로써 「일상생활방법론」의 사회학적 의미와 함의를 규명하여 보았다. 즉, 「일상생활방법론」은 각 제도적인 배경하에서의 일상적인 활동을 연구함으로써 사회가 어떻게 유지되어 나가는가를 밝혀줄 수 있고, 그러한 과정에서 핵심적인 사회학적 쟁점들 즉, 권력관계, 불평등 현상 등을 설명해 줄 수 있는 가능성을 갖고 있음을 제시하였다. 또한 「일상생활방법론」의 보다 일반적이고 추상적인 차원에서의 이론화 작업인 시쿠렐의 인지 사회학(Cognitive Sociology)을 고찰함으로써 사회 구조의 유지에 필수적인 사회화에 대한 새로운 사회학적 설명을 제공하고자 하였다. 마지막으로 「일상생활방법론」의 보다 구체적이고 확고한 형태로서의 대화분석(conversational analysis)을 고찰함으로써 이 접근법의 사회학적 의의와 분석 도구로서의 유용성을 밝혀 보았다. 이상과 같은 작업을 통하여 본고는 「일상생활방법론」의 시각과 접근이 사회학적 연구 작업에 매우 유용하리라는 결론을 제시하였다.
