자질계층이론에 의한 조음위치 자질동화현상 분석

Abstract

비선형음운론(nonlinear phonology)은 Chomsky and Halle의 The Sound Pattern of English(1968)로 대표되는 선형음운론(linear phonology)보다 자연 언어에 존재하는 많은 음운현상을 더 자연스럽게 설명해 왔다. 특히 음운현상에서 하나의 단위로 함께 기능하는 변별자질들의 자연부류(the natural classes of phonological features)의 개념과 자질들간에 존재하는 지배와 결합의 계층 구조를 잘 포착하는 자질계층이론(feature geometry)은 음운현상을 간결하고 자연스럽게 설명한다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 자질계층이론에 입각하여 동화현상을 분석하고 있다. 제 2 장에서는 복수층 자질표시를 가정하는 비선형음운론이 어떤 자질들의 묶음이 단위를 이루어 동화에 참여한다는 것을 체계적으로 설명하지 못하는 문제가 있음을 지적하고 자질내부에 계층구조를 두어 부류마디가 확산하는 것으로 동화현상을 설명하는 자질계층이론이 도입되어야 하는 타당한 근거를 제시한다. 제 3 장에서는 조음위치마디내의 조음위치자질들을 다른 관점에서 조직화하는 Sagey (1986)의 "조음자마디이론(Articulator Based Model)"과 Clements and Hume (1995)의 "협착이론(Constriction Based Model)"을 비교·검증한다. Sagey는 조음위치마디와 자질들 사이에 능동적인 조음자(active articulator)마디인 입술마디(labial node), 설정마디(coronal node) 및 설배마디(dorsal node)를 설정하여 조음위치자질들이 조음자에 의해 관할되는 것으로 설명하나 동화현상에서의 자음과 모음의 투명성(transparency)문제를 효과적으로 설명하지 못하는 한계가 있다. 이에 반해 Clements and Hume은 구강의 협착의 정도(the degree of constriction)와 협착이 일어나는 위치(the location of constriction)를 바탕으로 조음위치자질들을 구조화하고 있다. 따라서 협착모델에서는 동일한 조음위치자질(place features)에 의해 정의되는 자음과 모음을 자연부류로 포착하므로 서로 인접해 있는 자음과 모음사이에서 발생하는 동화나 이화현상을 보다 합리적으로 설명한다. 제 4 장에서는 Clements and Hume의 협착이론을 실제 언어의 동화현상에 적용해 본다. 협착이론에서는 구강협착을 기본원리로 하여 분절음(segment)을 통합적인 관점에서 자연부류로 파악하므로 범주상호간에 일어나는 음운현상을 자연스럽게 설명한다. 즉, 자음이 인접한 모음의 조음위치자질을 얻는 구개음화와 마찰음화는 모음의 조음위치자질이 인접자음으로 확산된 것으로 설명하고 그리고 동일한 조음위치자질에 의해 정의되는 자음과 모음이 인접하지 않는 이화현상은 필수굴곡원리에 의한 분포상의 제약으로 설명하므로 협착에 근거한 자질계층이론이 음운동화현상을 설명하는데 있어서 보다 합리적인 분석을 가능하게 함을 보여주려 한다.;Nonlinear phonology shows a more plausible explanatory power than the linear phonology, the culmination of which is found in Chomsky and Halle's The Sound Pattern of English (1968). A number of different theoretical frameworks are found in nonlinear phonology, one of which is "the theory of feature geometry." The concept of ''natural classes of phonological segments" has greatly enriched the explanatory spectrum of phonological theory. However, it lacked the internal organization of the features which make up a segment or a natural class. This deficiency was supplemented by the theory of feature geometry, which incorporates a hierarchical internal organization among the distinctive features which are realized as a phonological segment on the surface. The present thesis has attempted to show that the theory of feature geometry is more powerful in its mechanism for the explanation of phonological processes of assimilation. In particular, we have tried to show that the Clements and Hume's (1995) Constriction Based Model with its "Place Node" is an ideal device to comprehesively account for the phonological assimilation.
