편견으로서의 성차별주의와 가치갈등에 관한 일 연구

Abstract

This study examined the relevance of egalitarian and individualistic values to sexism. The subject of this study were the 335 college students in Seoul area. Swim, Aikin, Hall & Hunter(1995) proposed that values underlying sexism might be egalitarianism and individualism. Those who believe in egalitarianism support the idea that all people deserve the same opportunities for success. Individualists believe that people should be judged on the basis of their abilities and devotion to work and rewards should be given on the basis of superior effort and talent. First, we conducted correlations of scores on the sexism with egalitarianism scores and individualism scores. The results supported that egalitarian values correlated negatively with sexism, and individualist values uncorrelated with sexism. Our second test of regression analyses examined the effects of egalitarian and individualistic values to sexism. The results of this analyses supported the effects of the value in the egalitarianism and individualism on sexism. A total of 11.26% of the variance was explained by the analyses. Two variables included in this study proved to be a significant predictor of sexism. Third, differences in sexism scores for the combined effect of levels of egalitarianism scores and levels of individualism scores were assessed by way of a t-test. Those respondents whose egalitarianism scores was high and individualism scores was low would have been placed in the high egalitarianism/low individualism group. Those respondents whose individualism scores was high and egalitarianism scores was low would have been placed in the high individualism/low egalitarianism group. There were statistic ally significant differences between the means of the combined levels of egalitarianism and individualism. The more a person believes in the principles of egalitarianism, the less likely it is that the person will support sexism. Egalitarianism and individualism proved to be a significant predictor of sexism. More importantly, the relative extent to which a person believes in the principles of egalitarianism and individualism affects the extent of that person's sexism. The more the person believes in egalitarianism relative to that person's belief in individualism, the less likely the person will support sexism. Similarly, the more the person believes in individualism relative to that person's belief in egalitarianism, the more likely the person will support sexism.;본 연구는 편견중에서 성차별주의를 선정하여 이에 기초하는 기본적 가치로서의 평등주의와 개인주의가 유의한 상관관계를 형성하고 있는지, 그리고 성차별주의에 개인주의와 평등주의 가치가 기초한다면 성차별주의에 미치는 두 가치의 영향은 유의한 것인지를 검증해 보고자 하였다. 덧붙여, 개인이 성차별주의적 태도를 표명하는데 있어서, 개인주의 가치와 평등주의 가치간의 갈등을 경험한다면, 두 가치의 상대적 크기에 따라 개인이 표명하는 성차별주의적 태도는 다를 것이고 이를 검증하여 보고자 하였다. 본 연구는 서울지역의 전문대를 포함한 대학 남녀 재학생 335명을 대상으로 실시되었으며 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 평등주의는 성차별주의와 부적 상관관계를 나타냈고, 개인주의는 유의한 상관관계를 나타내지 않았다. 즉, 모든 개인에게 그가 어떠한 결점을 가졌든지간에 성공할 수 있는 동등한 기회, 여건이 주어져야 한다고 생각하는 평등주의자일수록 성차별주의적 태도를 적게 나타내었음을 말한다. 그리고 개인의 성공여부는 얼마나 노력하였느냐, 얼마나 능력을 갖추었느냐에 달려있다고 생각하는 개인주의자들은 성차별주의적 태도와 상관을 보이지 않았다. 개인이 가진 평등주의, 개인주의 두 가지 가치로 성차별주의적 태도를 예측할 수 있음도 밝혀졌다. 평등주의 가치와 개인주의 가치는 성차별주의에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 보여지고, 성차별주의 점수의 총 변동중 평등주의, 개인주의 가치 점수의 변화로 설명될 수 있는 부분은 11.26%였다. 그리고, 평등주의 대 개인주의 갈등이론에 따라 두 가치의 상대적 크기가 다른 집단이 성차별주의 점수에 유의한 차이를 나타내는지를 알아보기 위하여 두 집단의 평균을 비교한 결과 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그것은 높은 평등주의 가치를 가진 동시에 낮은 개인주의 가치를 가진 집단은 높은 개인주의 가치를 가진 동시에 낮은 평등주의 가치를 가진 집단보다 성차별주의 점수가 낮을 것이라는 예측을 지지하는 것이다.
