S. Rachmaninoff의 Piano Sonata Op. 36에 관한 연구 및 분석

Abstract

Sergei Vasilyevith Rachmaninoff(1873-1943), the successful pianist, conductor and musical composer, was one of the very few who did not follow the 'new trend' among the composers who lived in his time during the late 19th and early 20th century. Like Tchaikovsky, he was in line with the conservative Anton Rubinstein(1829-1894) and was traditional Russian musicians. Rachmaninoff adopted the brilliant virtuoso techniques and the singing melodies that Chopin and Liszt used. By adopting such traditional styles and not following the contemporary trends, Rachmaninoff is left in a rather vague position in the history on Western Music. He himself being an outstanding pianist, adopted the traditional techniques as can be seen in all of his work but especially in his piano works. Also, his ingenious techniques in melody is almost perfect. The purpose of this study is to analyze the musical characteristics and the performance technique of Rachmaninoff through "Piano Sonata Op. 36". As an approching to this study, I am going to discuss his lifetime, works, and general characteristic of his piano music. Then the analysis of Piano Sonata Op. 36 is followed. This sonata was composed in 1913 and revised in 1931. In revised version, it became more melodious and natural in musical flow. Examining this work in formal point of view, the first movement has the Sonata form that two contrasting themes are modified, developed, and recollected. And the first theme is continuously repeated and has many modulated parts. The second movement has introduction and A - B -A´ ternary form. Theme melody and melodies, where a piece of the first movement is modified, are main stream. The third movement also has introduction and two contrasting melodies are repeated. It makes us feel uniformity by continuous repetition of the first movement melody. Like this, all around the work, the first theme motive of the first movement is repeated and gives the relevance of each movement. This point is the most great characteristic of this work. Piano Sonata Op. 36 of Rachmaninoff has the color of the late Romanticism in melody, chord, rhythm, form etc.. Through the study on this work, these musical characteristics of Rachmaninoff are able to be examined.;본 논문은 러시아 후기 낭만파 음악의 중요한 작곡가인 Sergei Vasilyevitch Rachmaninoff(1873-1943)의 피아노 음악과 「Piano Sonata b♭minor, Op. 36」의 음악적 특징을 분석, 연구함으로써 시대적 전환기를 맞는 Rachmaninoff의 자세를 재음미하고, 그의 음악에서 갖는 피아노 작품의 비중을 재인식시키는데 그 목적이 있다. Rachmaninoff는 19∼20세기의 두 시대에 걸쳐있는 작곡가들 가운데 새로운 사조에 동요하지 않고 낭만어법을 계승한 대표적인 러시아 작곡가이다. 그의 「Piano Sonata b♭minor, OP. 36」은 1913년에 작곡되고 1931년에 개작되었는데, 1931년 판에서는 선율, 화성, 리듬, 아티큘레이션, 다이나믹, 짜임새에 있어 많은 변화가 이루어졌다. 1악장은 서로 대조적인 두 개의 주제가 변형되어 나가며 곡이 전개되고 재현되는 소나타 형식으로 되어 있다. 2악장은 서주와 A - B - A′의 세 부분 형식을 취하며 주제 선율과 1악장의 단편이 변형된 선율이 주를 이룬다. 3악장도 서주로 시작되며 2악장과 마찬가지로 1악장의 제 1주제 선율이 계속적으로 나옴으로써 통일감을 느끼게 한다. 이와 같이 곡 전체에 걸쳐 1악장의 제 1주제 동기가 반복되어 악장간의 연관성을 부여하는데, 이 점을 이 곡의 가장 큰 특징이라 볼 수 있겠다. 그 외에도 다양한 화음, 선율 적인 면에서의 반음계적 진행과 이로 인한 빈번한 전조가 나타나 음악에 색채감을 더하고, 셋잇단음표, 당김음 등 다 양한 리듬 형태로 곡의 분위기를 더욱 생동감 있게 하고 있으며, 효과적인 다이나믹은 곡의 웅장함을 더하고 있다. 이렇듯 Rachmaninoff의 「Piano Sonata b♭minor, Op. 36」은 선율, 화성, 리듬, 형식 등의 여러 가지 면에 있어 후기 낭만주의적 색채를 띄고 있다.
