William Godwin과 Mary Wollstonecraft의 고딕 소설로 본 현실

Abstract

The 1790's of England was a period of upheaval, because the French Revolution of 1789 had given a strong boost to English reformers. Some of the English reformers called English Jacobins used the novel as a vehicle to spread their political ideas and enlighten a popular audience. The English Jacobin novels which contain numerous Gothic elements have not received a high rank in the received canon of the realistic novel. The English Jacobin novelists, conscious of the limited and perverted "objective" reality that realistic novelists portrayed, chose to show the reality of contemporary life through their subjective vision. In this thesis, I intend to re-evaluate the subjective vision and reality of the English Jacobins and in particular, William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft. I will analyze Godwin's Caleb Williams and Wollstonecraft's the Wrongs of Woman to reveal what I call their "Gothic" reality which embodies both the writers's estimation of "true'' reality and their desire for social reformation. In Caleb Williams, Godwin presents "the modes of domestic and unrecorded despotism, by which man becomes the destroyer of man." He shows the suffering psychology of the oppressed individual through Caleb's subjective point of view. By revealing Caleb's own final submission to the romanticized "honour" of his social superior, the guilty Falkland, Godwin criticizes the power of political ideology in dominating the spirit of the people. In The Wrongs of Woman, Wollstonecraft embodies her emotions to exhibit "the misery and oppression, peculiar to women, that arise out of the partial laws and customs of society." Wollstonecraft delineates the world of women's inner suffering through Maria's memoirs and Jemima's long monologue. She also picks the mad-house as her work's setting to highlight the gothic reality of women. In contrast with Godwin who just presents the tragic gothic reality of the oppressed, Wollstonecraft suggests that the wrongs of women must be overcome through the mutual sympathy and union of women. Godwin and Wollstonecraft as reformers deliver their penetrating insight into their society in their novels by means of Gothic elements. By delineating "things as they are" by focusing on the suffering mentality of the oppressed, they warn that "the objective truth" of a hierarchical society is susceptible to become the privilege of those in power. They aim to awaken the submissive spirit of people and make them realize their identity as free individuals. In this respect, I think it is desirable to re-estimate the import of their novels as well as their status as novelists. I wish to contribute to a revisionary appreciation of the English Jacobin novelists through my thesis.;격동의 시기로 기억되는 1790년에 활동한 개혁가들 중 일부는 자신의 정치적 사상을 널리 알리고 일반 대중들을 각성시키기 위해서 소설을 썼다. 하지만 다양한 고딕 요소를 담고 있는 이들의 소설은 사실주의 소설이 주류로 인정되는 문학 전통 속에서 높은 평가를 받지 못했다. 영국 자코뱅 소설가라 불리는 이들은 사실주의 소설이 보여주는 객관적 실재가 가진 한계를 인식하고 자신의 주관적인 인식을 통해서 당대의 삶을 제시한다. 이 논문에서 필자는 영국 자코뱅 소설가, 특히 William Godwin과 Mary Wollstonecraft가 가진 당대 사회 현실에 대한 인식 능력과 그들의 개혁 의지를 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고 Godwin의 Caleb Williams와 Wollstonecraft의 The Wrongs of Woman의 분석을 통해, 각 작가가 자신의 "진정한 실재"에 대한 인식과 사회 개혁의지를 고딕 요소를 이용해서 어떻게 담아내고 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. Godwin은 Caleb Williams에서 Caleb의 주관적인 관점을 통해 사회적 불평등속에서 독재자에 의해 희생당하는 억압된 자의 내면을 파해친다. 그리고 마지막 결론에서 Caleb이 자신을 고통으로 몰고 간 Falkland의 가치관에 항복하는 모습을 통해, Godwin은 일반 대중의 정신을 지배하는 정치 이데올로기의 위력을 비판한다. 반면에 Wollstonecraft는 The Wrongs of Woman에서 Maria의 회상록과 Jemima의 긴 독백을 통해서 편파적인 법과 사회적 관습 속에서 고통받는 여성의 내면 세계를 드러낸다. 특히, 그는 여성 상호간의 공감과 화합으로 가부장적 사회 속에서 여성의 억압된 상황을 극복할 수 있는 방안을 제시해 준다. 이상과 같이 Godwin과 Wollstonecraft는 사회 현실에 대한 깊은 통찰력을 고딕 요소를 통해 보여줌으로써 "객관적 실재"의 한계를 지적할 뿐만 아니라 독자들이 "진정한 실재"의 참 모습을 자각할 수 있도록 한다. 이런 면에서 필자는 이들의 소설이 가진 중요성과 소설가로써 이들의 위치를 재평가하는 것이 바람직하다고 생각한다.
