Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to define the truth conditions of the progressive aspectual operator perfect aspectual operator HAVE in English. Originally, the aspect was understood as the state or characteristics which the verbs mean. But, the concept of aspect was changed with the development of the transformational generative grammar. According to them, the aspect in English is divided into the progressive aspect and the perfect aspect. The former appears as the form of be + present participle and the latter as have + past participle. Therefore, in this thesis the truth conditions of the operators of these two aspects are discussed. For the analysis of aspect, the concept of 'time' is very important. In this thesis, the process of defining the truth conditions of progressive and perfect aspect is not based on the moments of time, but based on the intervals of time. The contents of this thesis are as following; In Chapter 2, based on the time intervals, the English progressive form is analyzed and the problem of 'imperfective paradox' is presented. We become to know that this 'imperfective paradox' can be solved by introducing the branching time structure instead of the linear time structure. For the purpose of analyzing the progressive form, the progressive operator PROG was assumed by Dowty and so the progressive sentence is fully explained by defining the truth condition of [PROG Φ]. In addition, according to Tedeschi's theory, we can supplement the weak point of Dowty's analysis of progressive form. In Chapter 3, the inchoative BECOME is discussed in the branching time structure which is introduced in Chapter 2. This inchoative BECOME is the characteristic property of the achievement verbs. We can interpret properly the sentences containing the inchoative verbs by defining the truth condition of [BECOME Φ] in the branching time structure. And the imperfective paradox can be solved by considering the definition of [PROG (BECOME Φ)] which is formed from [PROG Φ] and [BECOME Φ]. In Chapter 4, the truth condition of the perfect form in English is discussed. First of all, many kinds of theories about the perfect form, and next, the main point that we must pay attention to is presented. The truth condition of the perfect form is also concerned with ˝time˝ and it's very important whether the present time is contained in the time in which the perfect is defined. Therefore, we need to observe the meaning of now. In the end, we become to know that now is defined as referring to its neighborhood, an indefinite interval of time containing the present moment of time, and the present perfect is realized in its neighborhood preceding the present moment 'n'. The truth conditions of the perfect operator HAVE which are presented by Richards and Heny are also observed, and it is concluded that Heny's definition of HAVE is proper to the analysis of the perfect form. Therefore, based on the truth condition of HAVE by Heny, the perfect sentences with now and other time adverbials can be properly analyzed.
