- Choi Jung-hee is an author falling under the category of the second stage of woman's literature with Park Wha-sung, Paek Shin-Ae, Kang Kyung-Ae, following in the footsteps of 1920's Women's Literature by Kim Il-yob, Na Hye-suk, Kim Myung-Soon etc. Choi Jung-hee marked an epoch in the history of Korean Woman's Literature, while going through her literary transfiguration process in her own way for about 50 years. Her over 50-year-old literary history is in contrast to the other women authors of the early stage of New Literature, who put an end to their short period of writing activities due to artificial causes like a premature death. Therefore a comprehensive study on the distinctive feature and the development process of Choi Jung-hee's novels means giving shape to the women writer's consciousness of the early stage of New Literature lasted about 50 years from a historical perspective of woman's Literature. In Choi Jung-Hee's novel, women's lives with the development of modernization from the early stage of New Literature through more than 50 years are consistently formed.
the development process of her novels is relevant to a heroine's modern experience and her confronting phase, which is an establishing course of women's identity in a global order of modern times. Her heroines make an effort to shake off burdened fetters of pre-modern times as well as standing as the self-regulating modern subject, which is linked together with an exertion to overcome the modern convention of the times. That's because it's impossible for women to obtain modern subjectivity without fundamental changes of modern times. In her novel, women gain their identity in a public area, which means that women are critical members of society seeking their potentiality within themselves, by suggesting 'Feminity ' , witch is restructed through fundamental self-examination process in women's own experience, as an alternative model of essential quality of modernity. Like this, the distinctive feature of Choi Jung-hee's novels shares opinions of a trend of feminism, which generalizes women by placing them under the catergory of analysis. In this thhhesis, we classify it into 4 chapters and study in order to look into the detailed identity obtainng process of her heroines minutely.
In chapter Ⅱ, the category of woman, which Choi Jung-Hee's heroines accept as a fate, is iooked into in connection with the time element, 'modern times', however modern times solidify the category of women instead. As a result, her heroines' confrontation has no choice but to becomplex in a global order of modern times. Choi Jung-Hee's heroines are faced with fatal circumstances of exerting themselves continuously to be sound modern subject, while at the same time inevitably making an attempt to overcome the modern convention.
In chapter Ⅲ, Friedman's plot names are quoted with aview to study the development press of Choi Jung- Hee's novels. Her works, dealing with woman's fates, come under the fortune plot as the main problems created according to the plot and their solutions rely on external circumstances not on heroines' intention or recognition. Choi Jung-Hee's works, falling within the fortune plot, are classified into three categories : the pathetic plot, the tragic plot, and the admiration plot. Her early works belong to the pathetic plot, whereas , a trilogy, which was published later, belong to the tragic plot, and the late works to the admiration plot, therefore, a study on the distinctive feature of her works made it possible to look into the development process of them. Choi Jung-Hee's novels show a narrative structure of self- discovery, while going through a period of criticism levelled at women following in the footsteps of conventional moral principles passively and also a period of study on woman's personal experience, followed by objectification of woman's fate in public area and acquisition of women's identity. The plot structure df Choi Jung-Hee's novels start from changes in woman's identity and also a process of her novels' development is equal to that of study on woman's identity.
In chapter Ⅳ, the connection between the spirit of the Choi Jung-Hee's times and women's identity is examined closely. Her study works convey a tendency character. However, her conscience as a writer, suggesting to readers for learning to be "strong woman" who can give a helping hand to Maxists, gets along with the times. After the study works, when Choi Jung-Hee belong to concentrate on women's personal experience, her realm of literature got into stride and reconstructed the feminity through fundamental study on woman's personal experience. While passing a period of the pathetic plot and the tragic plot, maternity not as a system but as an experience as well as sexuality not as a commodity but as a relation are found to create categories of new thought, therefore reaching a period of the admiration plot. Then the feminity comes up to surface as an alternative model against a conventional view and ideology of male domination. Moreover, women gain their identity in a public area as a critical member of society seeking their potentiality within themselves. Finally, they learn to objectify their fate, 'female'.
In chapter Ⅴ, we establish the significance of Choi Jung-Hee's works as woman's Literature by ascertaining that distinctive feature of her works share opinion of a trend of feminism which emphasize on characteristics of women's experiences and generalize women by placing them under the category of analysis.
However, the pattern that women's experience and understandings of women based on th experience solidify already existing conception of women's being in charge of housekeeping and bringing up children sets limits to Choi Jung-Hee's literature. Maternity for women should be understood as a way of forming a connection with reality, also as an actual role they play in realities of life.;최정희는 김일엽, 나혜석, 김명순 등의 20년대 여성문학에 이어 박화성, 백신애, 강경애 등과 함께 등장한, 여성문학 제 2기에 속하는 작가이다. 최정희는 50여 년 동안 나름대로의 문학적 변모과정을 거치면서 한국여성문학사에 큰 획을 그었다. 50여년이라는 긴 문학적 이력은 신문학 초기의 여성작가들이 요절 등의 인위적 요인에 의해 짧은 문학 활동은 마감한 것과 대조된다. 때문에 최정희 소설의 특징과 전개 과정에 대한 포괄적인 고찰은 여성문학사적 측면에서 50여년에 걸쳐 진행된 신문학 초기 여성작가의 의식을 구체화시킨다는 의의를 지닌다.
최정희의 소설에는 신문학 초기부터 근대화가 진전되는 50여 년 동안 여성들의 삶이 일관되게 형상화되어 있다. 최정희 소설의 전개 과정은 여주인공의 근대 경험과 그 대응양상과 관련되며, 근대라는 세계 질서 속에서 여성이 정체성을 확립하는 과정이기도 하다. 최정희 여주인공은 자신들에게 짐 지어진 전근대의 질곡을 헤치고 자율적인 근대적 주체로 서려는 노력을 하며, 이러한 노력은 근대의 틀을 넘어서려는 노력으로 이어진다. 근대의 근본적인 변화가 없이는 여성이 근대적 주체를 획득하는 것은 불가능하기 때문이다. 여성 자신의 체험에 대한 근원적 성찰과정을 통하여 재구성된 ‘여성성’이 근대주의적 속성에 대한 대안적 모델로 제시됨으로써, 여성은 여성 자신 속에서 가능성을 찾는 비판적 사회 구성원이라는, 공적 영역에서의 정체성을 획득하게 된다. 이러한 최정희 소설의 특징은 여성을 하나의 분석 범주로 개념화하려는 여성해방론의 한 경향과 맥을 같이 하는 것이다. 본고는 최정희 여주인공이 정체성을 획득하는 과정을 구체적으로 규명하기 위해 다음과 같이 4장으로 분류하여 고찰한다.
