Abstract
This is the study on Theo van Doesburg's Elementarism and architechtural works. Architecture and find arts have been interrelated from ancient times, but until 19th century, by sharing plastic expressive means, architecture and art could not be integrated with a unity. Especially the geometrical abstract was applicated the architectural surface which had been searched the rational and pure form, contributed to the architecture as total artistic work (gesamtkunstwerk) representing modernity. The aims of Elementarism are to pursue the new unity between life and art, and then to present the ideal environment of the future by realization of the pure abstract style, both of artistically and socially. Through the Elmentarism against all of the static and the rigid, he wished to deconstruct arbitrary divided principles and structures, to create the environment revealing the ture reality, finally to recover the humanity tied to old traditions. The contents of Elementarism theory are consisted of three parts: universal reality, mechanic aesthetic, unity of space and time. Van Doedburg who convinced that abstract art could be Absolute Spirit in itself, pursued the perpetual movement which the artist regarded as the universal reality, through thories and works. He found the maximum of dynamics in contemporary social situation. He recognized the limitation of painterly expressive ability, so he practiced paintings and architectural works simultaneously. Machine, for van Doesbure, was identified with architecture in that both of them were reflection of the spirit of the times and have to satisfy the functional and aesthetic necessities. He took formative principle of machine which was organized according to mathematical logic with unpremeditated beauty, as the constrctural principle of the elementarist architecture. In this repect, he enthusiestically adopted dada spirit and acted in dada groups. Because Dadaism contains positive attitute to creative art, by denying prejudices and conventions. Van Doesburg converged various meaning such as Spiritualistic soul, hyper dimension, the space combined time, and dadaist fluidity upon '4th dimension' concept and intended to make elementaristic space as a 'space- time continuum'. In order to realize space-time continuum, he insisted on using colours and the oblique. Colours visually destroyed architectural structures and the oblique meant constant process and developing reason. Van Doesburg made a start architectural work with designing stained-glass and colour scheme committed from De Stijl architects. He transformated grid compositions intricately or stressed architectural elements by contrasting colours. In doing so, the orthogonal relationship of the building was dispersed. By van Eesteren's help, he could have broad visions about the space and get substential knowledge related architecture. 'Through the colour design of Amsterdam University Hall, van Doesburg recognized the expressive possibility of the diagonal. Following the works, the manufacture of the models and axonometric drawings, for De Stijl architecture exhibition in 1923, offered him the chance that was him to experiment new architectural concept breaking from historicism. The models and the counter -construction drawings, showing elementaristic open space, were the basis of the successive study about 4th dimension space with tesseracts. In 1926, van Doesburg, with Arp and his wife, repaired the Cafe Aubette in Strasburg, in the present fashion. Here he synthesized all of the fruits in painting and architecture. In this place where causes various action of the people he embodied dynamism that was the universal law and special quality of' the modern city. In particular, composition at 'Petite Salle Dancing' and counter-composition at 'Cine- Dancing' were the focus of the Aubett and dramatic realization of the contrast which he consistantly adhered to. He tried suggest the new idea of the future city. It was planned for solution about problems of the traffic and population. The Elementaristic environment was not simply a conception but the promoter that accelerate a ideal society by intellectually stimulating the people. Van Doesburg's Elementarism gave his own thoughts on art and architecture, man and social community. And, by visualizing his theory, through the medium of architecture, he wanted to suggest the new space reflecting reality of life.
