This thesis aims to examine "body" image and its variations that appear throughout Chung Hyun Jong's poetry, and study the linguistic techniques of incarnated poetic words used in relation with such body images, by which uncovering synthetically the inclinations of Chung ' s poetic consciousness. The structure of the thesis will be as follows: first, by considering body image and its world-cosmic variations in relation with the functional equivalency of the action verbs attached to these images, we shall examine the inclinations that 'body' expresses. Then by examining intentional consciousness manifested by the linguistic characteristics that are used in relation with the body image, we will uncover Chung's poetic consciousness, realized synthetically through body image and linguistic imaginations. Chung Hyun Jong creates rich variations of body image through his dynamic imagination, and derives by functional equivalency the necessary correlation between human body and cosmically expansive thing that is incarnated. Perceiving a body within the world as a sensory expressor and at the same time as an entity with transcendental tendency, beyond dualistic thinking on body and mind Chung endows the body itself with existential values and expresses through body image variations the communicative functions that human bodies conduct as a communicating medium for relating to the world and the cosmos. In chapter Ⅱ, we analyzed concretely the partial characteristics of body, manifested by words such as 'feet', 'wings', 'eyes', 'ears', 'hands', 'tongue', ' stomach', 'embrace', and 'womb' that appear in connection with action verbs; and examined the cosmically expanded images that possess functional equivalency with them to derive the inclinations connoted therein. 'Feet' possesses the equivalent function as 'wings' does and exhibits the will for ascension through actions such as 'walk', 'leap', 'dance', 'rhythm', and 'fly'. In the process where 'feet', linked with air and water images, develops the action of 'walk' onto 'leap' and 'dance', the limitation of humans as earthly beings is revealed. 'Wings', that appears as an alternative image to such limitation and realized by daydream of flying, is divided into three kinds -- 'wings of birds' as an ideal, 'wings of things' that enables projected flying, and 'wings of humans' that presupposes descension; and categorizes human ascension as ' ascension downward' after experiencing life's sufferings and 'substitutional ascension', sought after by relying on matters such as air and water. 'Feet' and 'wings' which are extended to world-cosmic spaces variates as 'hole' and 'tree'; 'hole' appears as a body image and a space image while 'tree' appears as a body image and a plant image, show the equivalency with vertical actions of 'feet' and 'wings'. The vertical communcation, imaged by 'holes' and 'trees', and the projective ascension of humans relying on these images are transferred to the images of 'stars' and 'gems', showing variations of images that represent communicative media and intentional projections as follows: 'stars' as a direct variation of body, 'stars' that interacts with humans, 'gems' with 'vertical dynamicity ' and 'gems' with 'temporality'. 'Eyes' and 'ears' are combined with the verbs 'hide' and 'are surprised', 'are enlarged' in each and, beyond the function of sensory perceptors, appear as a medium that enables apprehending the nature of things and perceiving the world. On the other hand, such functional characteristics of 'eyes' and 'ears' are endowed with dynamicity by the images of 'water' and 'wind' and show that they induce 'awakenness', i.e. correlation with the world through apprehending the nature of things. The world-cosmic expansions that are functionally equivalent to 'eyes' and 'ears' are 'mirror' and 'window'. 'Mirror' is divided into 'mirror' that reflects the inner being with the ability of self-reflection and interaction with others and 'mirror' that induces reader's awareness of the reality by reflecting objectively social conditions; while 'window' which is breaking down the barriers through the verbs 'open', 'break', 'be worn out', and 'collide' may be seen to be enabling the expansion of boundaries through mutual interaction among things. Such functions of apprehension and interaction possessed by 'mirror' and 'window' are the same as the mediational characteristics of 'eyes' and 'ears'. 'Hands' develops the functions of 'eyes' and 'ears' in apprehending the nature of things and interacting among things. 'Hands', when coupled with the verb 'touch', possesses the communicative capacity and shows the image of sexual communication as an sensual image. This is related with the image of sexual intercourse imaged when 'tongue', reminded by the form image of 'finger', is combined with the verb 'lick' and when 'mouth(lip)' that includes 'tongue' is linked with the verbs 'suck' and 'kiss'. The image of 'hands' is transferred by the form equivalency to 'keys', which is linked to verbs 'open' and 'lock' to derive in each positive and negative meaning terms of 'communcation' and 'closure' among things. On the other hand, 'road', which is a world-cosmic expansion of 'hands', is imaged as a horizontal communicating space and brings out the couplings among heterogeneous things, which has the equivalency with the communicative function of 'hands'. 'Road' is also linked with body images and coupled with the verb 'be opened' to result in the sensual sex image, shown by 'hands' and 'tongue', and the creation of life through it. 'Stomach','embrace, and 'womb', which share the form of a circle, represent the paradoxical relationship between 'emptying ' and ' filling', where in Chung's poetry, 'emptying' in connection with 'nude' and 'undress' means the large life and the communcation beyond the closedness. These body images are expanded and variated to world-cosmic space to appear as 'void' and 'empty room'. 'Void' and 'room' are linked with 'be spreaded' and 'empty' to be coupled with atmospheric elements, and through this process show the circularity leading from expansion to condensation to expansion to ..., etc. The circle-ness and the circularity shared by 'embrace', 'stomach', 'womb', 'void', 'empty room', etc show the circular imagination of Chung's poetry. Circular imagination can be seen in the circular shape of 'Sun' and the circularity of 'sunrise' linked with the verb 'rise'. All of these images are functioning in atmospheric imagination and activate the dialectic of affirmation and negation enblematized by Chung 's poetry. In chapter Ⅲ, by analyzing the incarnation phases of Chung's poetic words, which are closely connected to the body image, Chung's inclinations that are consistent with the poetic consciousness derived via variations of body in Chapter Ⅱ are synthetically explored. Mimetic and onomatopoetic words employed by Chung shows the dynamic aspect of languages characterized with playfulness. In many cases, mimetic and onomatopoetic words that appear in connection with the notion of 'play' show through their lightness his poetic consciousness that laughs at the existing customs and orders and intends to the new, which is also connected to the awareness of the reality symbolized by the verticality of human ascension studied in Ⅱ.A. On the other hand, we also studied in connection with the playful awareness the impact of cheerfulness and vitality obtained by the visualization of languages using techniques such as mixing mimetic and onomatopoetic words, employing unfamiliar mimetic-onomatopoetic words and foregrounding of onomatopoetic words. Closing techniques used in Chung's poetry in many cases take the form of noun-form closing and through listing method he finds the depth of echoes amplified by rich meanings desolved in concrete aspects of body image. Such listing method contains the possibility of being enlarged and continued endlessly, hence is related with the theme of expansion and growth via interactions among things discussed in Chapter Ⅱ. On the other hand, incomplete forms resulting from using points of ellipsis contain the infinity of words in the silence and are expanded to nullify the boundary between humans and things, showing the communicativeness and other-oriented awareness. In such continuing structures of listing, things are laid in the present time that starts anew endlessly and acquire the sense of life, hence being linked to the new dynamic births that overcome the conflicts dialectically. The notion of expansion and growth of self that can be obtained as a result of communicating with others can be interpreted in the same context as the world-cosmic variations of body images in Chapter Ⅱ. The exclamation techniques of Chung that nullify the causal time structure and link the condensed awareness to the transcendental is divided into reflective exclamation on self and exclamation on things. Chung, through exclamations, not only empties himself but also expresses the wonder obtained at the moment of understanding the mysteries of self, things and world, and also shows the nullification of the boundary between self and others obtained at the same time. The imaginative transcendence and sublimation acquired from the use of such exclamations exhibit through linguistic visualization the projective ascension through things in Chapter Ⅱ. Techniques of using mimetic and onomatopoetic words, listing and closing methods, and using exclamations are linked with the transcendental inclinations through body image and show synthetically the consistent inclinations of Chung ' s poetic consciousness. The transcendental world that Chung intends to is a world that can be embodied through body images that founded in reality. He adopted concrete names of body parts as his poetic words using dynamic imagination of mental transcendence through the body, while forming a unique poetic world that can be visually perceived by endowing the poetic words with vitality and rhythmicality.-
