존 하트필드의 정치적 포토몽타주에 나타난 변증법

Abstract

본 논문은 베를린 다다이스트 중 하나인 존 하트필드(John Heartfield)의 정치적 포토몽타주에서 사용된 변증법적 방법이 작품의 주제와 형식에 어떻게 적용되었는지를 분석하고자 하는 연구이다. 1차 세계 대전의 폐허속에서 탄생한 베를린 다다는 급진적인 정치 성향을 띠게 되며, 마르크스-레닌주의와 결합되면서 예술을 통한 사회 변혁을 목표로 하게 된다. 특히 하트필드는 다다시기를 거친 후 더욱 정치적 성향이 강화되면서 독일 공산당에 가입하게 되고, 마르크스-레닌주의에 입각하여 예술가이기 전에 공산당원으로서의 임무를 우선시 하였다. 예술을 계급투쟁의 도구로 사용하였던 하트필드는 자신이 발명한 포토몽타주라는 형식을 당 선전의 정치적인 목적으로 활용하게 된다. 그의 이러한 정치적 성향과 포토몽타주와의 결합은 당시 독일을 위협하던 파시즘에 대한 투쟁으로 나아간다. 하트필드의 포토몽타주는 비판적 성향을 드러내면서 단지 감상하는 차원의 예술작품이 아니라 현실에 대한 강한 비판과 풍자를 일반 대중들에게 보여줌으로써 무뎌진 대중들의 의식을 일깨우고, 나아가 현실을 변화시키는 힘을 부양하는데 목적을 둔다. 따라서 자신의 작품을 좀 더 쉽게 대중들에게 접근시키기 위해 화랑이나 미술관 등 예술에 대한 기존의 제도와 생산 수단에서 벗어나서 신문이나 잡지, 책표지 등 출판 매체를 이용하여 작품을 배포하는 혁명적 소통방식을 활용한다. 이런 방식은 부르조아 계급의 전유물처럼 되었던 예술의 기능을 전환시켜 일반 대중이 쉽게 전할 수 있는 것으로 만들었다. 또한 하트필드가 포토몽타주를 제작하는데 사용한 방법은 마르크스-레닌주의 철학의 근거가 되는 변증법을 예술형식에 적응시킨 변증법적 방법이다. 이 방법은 작품의 주제와 형식에 구체적으로 적용되었고 하트필드 예술의 독창성이 드러나는 요소이다. 주제에 적용된 변증법은 드러나는 현상과 그 뒤에 숨겨져 보이지 않는 실재를 대립적으로 병치시킴으로써 파시즘의 본질을 폭로하는 것이다. 특히 파시즘의 주요 인물인 히틀러와 나치 간부들, 나치의 상징인 스와스치카 기장등을 모티브로 삼아 파시즘의 만행과 그 탐욕스러운 본성을 신랄하게 파헤쳤다. 또한 파시즘의 자본주의적인 본성에 의한 전쟁과 다가올 또 하나의 전쟁에 대해서는 강한 위기의식을 가지고 경고하였다. 그는 독일의 파시즘 뿐만 아니라, 전 세계의 파시즘에 의한 만행과 전쟁을 대상으로 포토몽타주를 통해 투쟁하였다. 형식에 적용된 변증법은 사진 이미지와 텍스트의 대립적인 사용을 통한 제3의 의미와 형식을 창출하는 것이다. 하트필드는 특별한 의미가 부여되지 않은 사진을 사용하여 그와 대립되는 사전과 함께 역설적인 내용의 텍스트를 조합시킴으로써 새로운 의미나 형식의 창출을 유도하였다. 서로 다른 이미지들의 혼합과 대비를 통해 구현된 변증법적 방법은 파시즘에 대한 비판과 풍자를 대중들에게 강렬하게 인식시키는데 효과적이었으며, 어떠한 말이나 행동보다도 강력한 저항의 몸짓이었다. 이상에서 살펴본 하트필드의 정치적 포토몽타주에 사용된 변증법적 방법은 예술을 계급투쟁의 도구로 사용하고자 했던 하트필드의 정치성을 실현하는데 용이한 방법이었으며, 후대의 좌익 예술가들에게 있어 하트필드의 작품이 규범이 되는 중요한 요소가 되었다. 하트필드는 포토몽타주를 통해 그가 신념으로 삼았던 마르크스-레닌주의의 철학적 근거인 변증법을 예술형식으로 전환시켜 제작 방법에 투영시킴으로써 정치적 예술의 방법적인 부분에 있어서 새로운 지평을 열었다는 점에서 미술사적 의미를 지니게 된다.;This article has been studied how to apply the dialetic in political photomontage to the theme and format of the art work by John Heartfield, the member of the Berlin Dadaist. Berlin-Dadaism born in the ruin of the First World War inclined to be progressive political attitude. It was combined with Marx-Leninism and aimed at the Social Revolution through the art. Especially after the Dadaism, John Heartfield finned up more and more the political inclination and joined the Communist Party. With base of the Marx-Leninism, he had preference for the duty as the communist rather than the artist . Using the art as the method of the class struggle, John Heartfield invented the form of photomontage which was utilized for the political purpose of the party propaganda. The combination of his political disposition and photomontage advanced to the struggle about the Facism which had treathened Germany at that period. John Heartfield's photomontage with showing the critical disposition awake the dense mass with knowing the strong critique and satire about the reality just not appreciation of art work. Moreorver it had the objective to improve the power changing the real situation. To approach the mass more easily, he got out of the established existing system and production means such as the museum and gallery in art and he use the revolutional communication methods which distribute the works by using publication media including the newspaper, magazine and book jacket. This propaganda method converted the fuction of art from monopolized item by the bourgeois into easily accessible one by the mass. The way to produce the photomontage was the dialetic based on the philosophy of Marx-Leninism, which was appropriate to the form of art by Jon Heartfield. This method was definitly used into the theme and the form and was the main element of the Jon Heartfield's creativity. Through the dialetic in the theme, he disposed oppositely appealing the actual state and being behind the reality to explore the essence of the Facism. Especially he use the important factors of the Facism-Hitler, the executive members of Nazi and swastika the symbol of Nazi-as the motive to clarify incisively the Facism's barbarity and its greedy nature. Also he warned the coming war due to capitalistic nature of the Facism with strong crisis. He combated against brutality and war by the Facism of all over the world as well as Germany. Through the dialetic in the form, he invented the third meaning and form as using opposite image and text of the photography. He induced a new meaning and form from combination of meaningless photography, opposite one and paradoxical text of content. It's the dialetic through the mixture and confrontation of image. It was very effective for the mass to recognize intensively the critique and satire about the Facism. Particularly it was the struggle tool more powerful than any other word and action. As the dialetic used in photomontage was discussed above, it's useful method to realize the political ideas of John Heartfield, who wanted to made the art as the instrument of the class struggle. Moreover his works became the important element to be a criterion for the left artist of future generation. John Heartfield converted the dialetic based on the Ma-Leninism as :his belief into art form and reflected them to the production method. Therefore in the area of political art's method, his work was meaningful to develop the new way.
