Abstract
Concerto for Flute and Orchestra This dissertation studies and analyzes The Concerto for Flute and Orchestra composed in 1926 by Carl Nielsen, which was among the works played at the graduation recital for the achievement of a Master's Degree. The Flute Cencerto by Carl Nielsen is made up of two movements, and is more similar to chamber music rather than to a Flute Cencerto. This composition shows the various use of tonality and scale, rapid variation of tempo, varied repetition, melodies in gradual progression, the expansion and diminution of tone and the change of rhythm through chromatic progression. Through all these compositional characteristics, this work functions as a more intensive method of expression covering various stages from classical harmony to polytonality. Neilsen made it possible for his works to escape from the simplicity caused by the unity of tone which is produced by the use of pedal point. His orchestral works and symphonies, however, permitted nonharmonic melodies to consist of thematic motives and shows the characteristic of using balanced. The various characteristics which appeared in his works made it easy for this dissertation to approach and understand Nielsen's musical thought and method of tonal expression implied in his music.
