This thesis attempts to study Rhapsodie espagnole of Franz Liszt. He composed this music for piano in 1963 out of two Spanish folk dance: Folie D'espagne and Jotα Aragonese. It shows the best of Spanish folk melody, rhythm and harmony. Hungarian rhapsody also played an important role in its form and composition technics. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to help to perform this music better with the good knowledge of the influence of Spanish folk music and Hungarian rhapsody. Rhapsodie espagnole consists of two part: the slow tempo first part of Folie D'espagne and the fast tempo 2nd part of Jota Aragonese, which was influenced by Hungarian style of slow tempo Lassan and fast tempo Friska. In the introduction, there are lots of improvisation and decorating cadeza which can be often found in Hungarian rhapsody. As Liszt shows the tone- color of Hungarian folk musical instrument in his Hungarian rhapsody, he actualized the tone-color of Spanish guitar and castanets in the Rhapsodie espagnole. He also used Hungarian folk scale, the so-called 'gypsy scale', in the 2nd part of this masterpiece. In here, we can find the Hungarian characteristics of composition techniques: modification, imitation and sequence of subject development, plenty of chromatic and octave progress, and the frequent change of dynamics and expression mark. The part one is composed of Folia subject and six variations. Subject can be found as single melody in lift hand's low compass. The first variation is expressed as dotted rhythm and the 2nd is a variation where legato plays key role along with two phrase of subject simultaneously. In the third variation, subject is expressed as octave chordal in right hand, while Spanish folk rhythm is performed by left hand. The fourth is series of triplet which mainly progresses in chromatic scale. The fifth, as a whole, is full of octave, and sixteenth note subject is played in unison by both hand accompanied by abundant syncopation rhythm. Lastly the sixth is variation of Spanish folk rhythm and used broad dynamics which ranges from pianissimo to fortississimo. The part two is about Spanish folk dance Jota Aragonese which is specialized by its improvisational melody, simple rhythm and monodic harmony of tonic and daminant. This part also can be divided by A which fully expresses the characteristics of Jota Aragonese, and A' which is transformed and developed melody pattern of A. Rhapsodie espagnole concludes at magnificent Coda which uses main melodies of both part one and two.-
