Abstract
Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958) who is regarded as one of the greatest composers in England since Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695) is also known as a conductor, musical scholar, and a collector of various solo songs throughout his vigorous musical activities in numerous fields. He has truly found success in choral works, symphony, orchestral works, solo songs and operas, including in his diversified range of composition in stage music and incidental music for films and plays. He has also been proliferate in the area of arrangement of Purcell's and that of various folk songs from different countries. The originality and uniqueness of his work was created by means of absorbing and integrating the various factors of modern music which was founded on the traditional British music and the Western music. His music revitalized the British music which was in the period of lethargy, and provided the British music with amazement and freshness, which in turn played a significant role in the development of the 20th centry British music. In particular, Vaughan Williams who succeeded after Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934) to contribute greatly in the growth of 20th centry British music produced approximately 130 choral works among which 70 works are religious choral music. These 70 religious choral music well represent the characteristics of his music. In this thesis, we first analyse the characteristics of Vaughan Williams' religious choral music through various documents and notes, and then present his composing style and techniques by examing forms, melodies, scale and tonality, structure of harmony, rhythms and contrapuntal techniques. The results are as follows : Many choral music which were written in the period of the Renaissance were antiphonal that characterized the style of church music at that time. Each form of the music is partitioned into 2 parts, 3 parts, 4 parts or even more, depending on the words and musical characteristics. The melodies in each part presents the combination of diatonic, stepwise and leaping melody, and the simple figure of thematic melody varies continuously in augmentation, diminution, repetition, inversion, and imitation for full development. The form of melody progresses itself based on Major-minor and mode. Each part has the contrast of tonality in Major-minor, the change to Major-minor in mode, and the use of polymodality and polytonality. The harmony is based on the use of chord 3 and chord 7, and further presents clear array of styles such as modal harmonic progression, chord 3 progression of root position, continuous progression of chord 3, and false relation. As each part varies the form of rhythm, it either changes or repeats itself and shows the irregular combination of 2,3 meter, 5,7 asymmetric meter. Furthermore, it also features frequent changes in meter, and tempo appearing within short measures. Therefore, summing up the analysis on Vaughan Williams' religious choral works, the general features of the work are fully represented in his work 『Mass in G Minor』. We can conclude that his choral works, esecially 『Mass in G Minor』 are in great harmony with previous British musical tradition and modern elements of British music.
