현대 패션에 나타난 블랙의 미의식에 관한 연구

Abstract

This dissertation intended to investigate the black color as the fashion color of the late 20th century and the aesthetic consciousness of black fashion, referring to the books on general theory of color and contemporary fashion and to the magazines concerning fashion specially with 'Vogue (america)' Jan. 1961∼Sep. 1996 and 'Time' Jan. 1955∼Sep. 1996. A new concept of clothing was required as the mass culture was introduced under the internationalized metropolitan at the late of 20th century. Existentialism arose with the confusion after the wars. These whole situation led to seek for a new picture of human being. In the high fashion, black was used in order to transmit the manifest image with variation of silhouette, and in the street fashion, to express a rebellious emotion. Usage of black increased with the contrast of hue as pop art arose, and it moreover happened in the traditional costume. Black was adopted as a new mode for a women's wear, whereas it previously used only for a men's wear. It was also remarkable that black adds its significance in unconstructive designs of 1980s. Black usually expressed a negative meaning, and was regarded as a color for a mourning and a sacred dress in western culture. There found several periods of black trend specially after 14th century, and black became popular among bourgeoisie. Black was considered as a traditional color of men's fashion since Dandyism. However by the effect of art de´co fashion, the perception toward black changed to a new beauty in 20th century. There continuously found a lot of aspects of black fashion in the late 20th century. In the high fashion, popularity of black could be seen at five different look and style: The era of line alphabet, pantaloons suit style, folklore style, mannish look and unconstructive design by Japanese, and in street fashion, it showed at four different style and fashion: Beat style, mods and rockers style, punk fashion and fetish fashion. The aesthetic consciousness of black fashion at the late 20th century mentioned above should be summarized as follows. First, Minimalism: Black fully represented the Kunst-wollen of modem fashion which was the aspiration of purity by existing exclusively as a colorless state. It was used for the visual effect of minimizing the space. Second, Dandyism: black, which had used to emphasize the spirituality of dandy fashion, was accepted in modern fashion. It expressed an attitude of admiring high society and also revealed sarcasm. Third, Nihilism: Black as a part of punk fashion symbolized their dark future based on disappointment and rage toward society. Nevertheless as punk style expanded, its black opened a new field of beauty. Fourth, Asceticism: Black was appeared with unconstructive design by japanese in 1980s, and it allowed a ascetical image when pursuing the soul fundamentally in oriental aesthetics of repression. Finally, Eroticism: Black was related to it of fetish fashion, and it made a use as a symbol of new sexual identification which refused to distinguish male from female. In 1990s, the black appeared under the retro mood, and it should be regarded specially as one fashion trend of inclination of simplicity. Black should be called the representative color of 20th century fashion with the reason of containing the most of aesthetic consciousness in modem fashion and implying minimalism, dandyism, nihilism, asceticism and eroticism.;본 논문은 20세기 후반 패션의 색채 가운데 블랙에 대해 고찰하고, 블랙 패션이 지닌 미의식에 관한 연구에 목적이 있다. 본 연구를 수행하기 위한 방법으로는 일반 문헌 고찰과 1961년 이후 미국판 「Vogue」와 1955년 이후의 「Time」에 기재된 패션 기사를 중심으로 연구하였다. 20세기 후반은 국제화가 이루어진 대도시를 배경으로 대중문화가 등장하였고, 새로운 의복 개념이 필요하게 되었다. 또한 전후의 불안 심리는 실존주의를 대두시켰다. 이러한 상황에서 현대인들은 전통적인 사고에서 벗어나 새로운 인간상을 추구하였다. 서구 문화에서 부정적 의미를 가진 블랙은 상복이나 성직자의 의복색으로 사용되었다. 특히 14세기 이후 블랙 패션의 유행이 있었고, 신흥 부르주아 계급의 복식에 블랙은 애용되었다. 댄디 이후 블랙은 남성복의 전통색으로 정착하였으며, 20세기에 들어와 아르데코 패션을 계기로 블랙은 고정관념을 타파하고 새로운 아름다움으로 인식되었다. 하이 패션에서는 실루엣의 급격한 변화와 함께 뚜렷한 이미지의 전달을 위해 블랙이 사용되었고, 스트리트 패션에서는 반항의 의미로 블랙이 애용되었다. 팝 모드의 등장으로 강한 원색의 대비가 이루어지면서 블랙은 한층 더 많이 등장하였으며, 이는 민속복에서도 동일한 현상을 보였다. 전통적인 남성복의 색채인 블랙은 여성복에서 새로운 감각으로 수용하였고, 1980년대의 비구축적 디자인의 블랙은 특징적이다. 20세기 후반의 블랙 패션은 여러 가지 양상으로 지속적으로 나타났다. 하이 패션에서의 블랙은 라인 알파벳 시대, 판탈롱 슈트 스타일, 포클로어 스타일, 매니시 룩, 일본 디자이너의 비구축적 디자인에서 나타났다. 스트리트 패션에서의 블랙은 비트 스타일, 모즈와 록커 스타일, 펑크 패션 그리고 페티시 패션에서 많이 나타났다. 1990년대는 레트로 경향과 함께 블랙이 등장하였고, 특히 단순화를 지향하는 패션 동향의 하나로 현재도 블랙은 애용되고 있다. 이와 같은 20세기 후반의 블랙 패션에 나타난 미의식은 미니멀리즘, 댄디즘, 허무주의, 금욕주의, 에로티시즘으로 나타났는데 이를 보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 미니멀리즘(minimalism)은 다른 색상을 배제하고 색이 없는 상태인 블랙만 존재하게 함으로서 순수성을 지향하는 현대 패션의 조형 의지를 잘 나타내었다. 나아가서 면적을 최소화하는 시각 효과에 블랙이 사용되었다. 둘째, 댄디즘(dandyism)은 최고를 지향하는 댄디 복식의 정신성의 발로이다. 이는 상류 사회를 지향하는 정신적인 면의 추구인 동시에 풍자적인 의미를 내포하였다. 셋째, 허무주의(nihilism)는 펑크의 블랙에서 처럼 사회에 대한 실망과 분노, 자신들의 암울한 미래를 상징하였다. 그러나 펑크 스타일의 대중화는 새로운 아름다움을 제공하였다. 넷째, 금욕주의(asceticism)의 블랙은 1980년대 일본 디자이너의 비구축적 디자인과 같이 동양적인 절제의 미학에 바탕을 둔 정신성을 추구하는 금욕적인 이미지를 부여하였다. 다섯째, 에로티시즘(eroticism)은 페티시 패션의 블랙에서와 같이 남성이나 여성으로 구분되지 않는 새로운 성 정체감의 상징으로 사용되었다. 미니멀리즘, 댄디즘, 허무주의, 금욕주의, 에로티시즘을 내포하는 블랙은 현대 사회의 의복에서 추구되는 미의식의 대부분을 내포하고 있어 20세기 패션을 대표하는 색으로 볼 수 있다.
