Ambisyllabification in English phonological processes

Abstract

본 논문은 영어에서 나타나는 양음절성과 관련된 여러가지 사항들을 문헌들을 토대로 하여 살펴보고 궁극적으로는 가장 타당한 양음절화의 기술방법과 어휘음운론의 관점에서 그 적용단계를 찾아, 영어의 음운현상, 예를 들어 탄설음화현상과 구개음화현상들을 설명하는 데 있어 양음절화현상이 가져오는 유용성을 보이고자 한다. 영어에서의 양음절성의 개념은 오래전부터 음성학자와 음운학자들에게 인식되어 온 개념이다. 그러나 1970년대 이전까지의 음운론에서는 음절구조자체에 대한 인식이 체계적으로 정립되지 않은 탓으로 양음절성이 하나의 음성적인 현상으로만 취급되어 왔다. 본고에서는 양음절에 대한 영어 화자의 직관을 보여주는 실험, 양음절성을 설정함으로서 보다 간단히 설명되는 음운 현상들 (예를 들어 탄설음화현상), 그리고 영어의 역사적인 고찰의 세가지 면에서 양음절성이 필요한 개념임을 보이고자 한다. Kahn (1976)은 처음으로 양음절성을 규정하는데 독립분절음적 양식으로 나타내었다. 그는 양음절에 대해 세가지의 규칙을 제시한 반면, Clements and Keyser (1983)는 단일화된 양음절규칙을 찾아내어 간결성을 획득하고 있으나 그들이 제시한 규칙은 구단계(phrase level)에서의 양음절화현상을 설명하지 못한다. 그러므로 양음절화 현상을 나타내는 보다 단일화된 규칙의 필요성이 있음을 지적하고 하나의 단일규칙으로 단어단계와 구단계에서의 양음절화가 적용되는 영역을 각기 달리함으로써 그 해결책을 제시한다. 즉, 단어단계에서의 양음절화는 음보로, 구단계에서는 음운적 발화로 확대되어야 함을 실례를 들어 보이고 있다. 양음절화현상의 형식화는 Hayes (1989)의 음절이론(moraic theory)을 근거로 하였는데 이는 여타 다른 음절이론의 단점들을 극복하고 음운현상들과 양음절현상을 기술하는 데 영어의 음절 특성을 반영한다는 설득력을 갖고 있기 때문이다. 또한 양음절화현상이 언어 보편적인 음절화 원리들과 영어 특정적인 규칙들의 충돌을 해소하는 역할도 할 수 있다는 점을 지적하고 있다. 이러한 양음절화 규칙의 적용위치를 살펴보면, 이는 후어휘부문 음운규칙을 급여하므로 후어휘부문의 비순환규칙으로 본다. 단어단계에서는 양음절화현상이 의무적인데 비해, 구단계에서의 양음절성은 연속발화에서만 허용되는 수의성을 띄고 있다. 이것은 양음절화가 후어휘부문의 규칙임을 입증하는 것이 된다. 영어에서의 탄설음화 및 구개음화 현상은 후어휘부문에서 양음절화가 이들 규칙을 급여하는 관계로 파악할 때 보다 자연스러운 설명을 지니게 된다. 다시 말하면, 음절화과정에서 양음절화 적용여부가 탄설음화와 구개음화의 규칙들이 적용될 수 있는 지 여부를 우선적으로 결정해 주는 선결조건이 됨을 시사하는 것이다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 영어에서의 양음절화현상은 화자의 직관을 반영하고 음절화과정에서 일어나는 문제점들을 해결하므로 반드시 필요한 개념이라고 보고 종전의 양음절화 규칙을 보완하여 단일화된 규칙으로 양음절화 현상을 기술하였다. 또한 양음절화가 후어휘부문의 규칙으로 작용할 때 음절기반적인 음운규칙들인 탄설음화와 구개음화 등의 음운과정을 보다 적절하게 설명할 수 있음을 보여준다.;The purpose of this thesis is to discuss problems of ambisyllabicity in the syllable theories and to seek an integretive representation of ambisyllabification and to find out the position at which point ambisyllabification occurs in syllabification processes. The acceptance of ambisyllabification will lead to consequences which enable to have the resonable descriptions of some phonological rules in English such as flapping and palatalization and to explain speaker's intuition about ambisyllabicity. The necessity of ambisyllabicity has been acknowledged sufficiently by traditional phonologists. The following pieces of evidence prove it in this paper: speakers realize the notion intuitively, some phonological processes can be stated clearly by using ambisyllabicity, and some historical changes from non-overlapping to overlapping provides indirect evidence for ambisyllabicity. Kahn (1976) firstly uses autosegmental design in defining ambisyllabicity with three distinct ambisyllabification rules. On the other hand, Clements and Keyser (1983) suggests a more simplfied rule of ambisyllabification. However, their rule cannot explain the ambisyllabification at the phrase level. In this thesis, the necessity of a unified and inclusive formalization of ambisyllabicity will be claimed. The unified formalization is possible by differentiating the domain of ambisyllabification at the word and the phrase levels. That is, the domain of ambisyllabification at word level will be presented the foot, while at phrase level it should be expanded to the prosodic category, the phonological utterance. The formalization of ambisyllabification in this paper is based on the moraic theory (Hayes, 1989) since it is more explanatory to describe most phonological processes than other syllable theories are and it overcomes the deficiencies which other theories have in describing ambisyllabification. It will be shown that ambisyllabification as well as the general syllabification reflect the characteristics of both language-universal principles and language-specific rules in the whole processes of syllabification. As a sort of resyllabification, the mechanism of ambisyllabification could play a role in solving conflicts between syllabification principles and rules. Thus, ambisyllabification is an important process to explain the syllabification. In lexical approach, ambisyllabification is a post-lexical noncyclic rule since it feeds the post-lexical rules. At the word level, ambisyllabification is obligatory while it occurs optionally in connected speech at the phrase level. It certifies that ambisyllabification is a post-lexical rule. Some phonological processes such as flapping and palatalization in English could have more relevant descriptions if we take the position of ambisyllabification feeds that of the phonological processes in post-lexical level. Thus, I will come to a conclusion that ambisyllabicity is a crucial notion in explaining speakers' intuition and that it can offer a solution to the conflicts between principles and rules in syllabification. The syllable-related phonological processes in English could be reasonably described by admitting the formalization based on the moraic theory and the ambisyllabification as a post-lexical rule.
