Abstract

Les Illuminations, op.18 을 작곡한 Benjamin Britten (1913-1976)은 영국 태생으로 지휘자이며 또한 연주자였다. 그는 성악곡, 관현악곡, 극음악, 합창음악, 발레음악, 실용음악 등 거의 모든 분야에서 많은 작품을 남겼고, Aldeburgh Festival과 영국 오페라 그룹을 창립하는 등 활발한 음악 활동을 보여주었다. 당시 영국의 음악은 Purcell 이후로 최고의 중흥기를 맞았는데, Britten은 이런 부흥기 중에서 절정에 위치한 작곡가라고 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 먼저 Britten의 생애를 통해 그가 접했던 음악들과 교제하였던 사람들, 그리고 그 영향으로 얻어졌던 대표적인 작품들을 살펴보고 있다. 그리고 그의 본능적인 작곡 영역이었던 성악 작품 속에서 그는 어떠한 작곡 기법을 사용하였는지를 연구해 보았다. 그리고 절충주의 작곡가라고 평가 받는 Britten이 어떠한 전통적 요소들을 자신의 음악 속에 적용시키고 있는지도 살펴 보았다. 그의 이런 작곡 기법들은 1939년 프랑스 시인 Rimbaud의 작품에 곡을 붙인 Les Illuminations 속에서도 잘 드러나고 있다. 이 연가곡은 전체적으로 Lydian 선법에서 얻어지는 음들을 중심으로 조성관계가 이루어져 있다. 그리고 Les Illuminations에서는 가사의 내용과 곡이 밀접한 상관관계를 통해서 구성되어 있으며, 곡들 사이에서도 조성과 음형, 동기 등이 연관을 맺으며 작곡되어 있다. 그리고 이 노래들은 프랑스어를 가사로 직접 작곡되었는데, 프랑스어의 미묘함과 Rimbaud 특유의 환상적이고 모호한 이미지를 표현하기 위해서 화성의 충돌, 복합박자의 사용, 리듬의 변형, 반음음계 등을 사용하였다. 그리고 극적인 효과를 가지는 현악 반주를 통하여 그 분위기를 훨씬 더 강조하였다. 그러나 이 작품에서도 Britten은 여전히 전통적인 작곡기법의 틀 안에서 움직이고 있다. 본 논문은 위와 같은 특징들이 어떠한 방법으로 통합되고 있는지 악보와 문헌을 통해서 살펴 보고, Les Illuminations을 현악 반주 대신 피아노 반주 악보로 분석하고 있다.;Benjamin Britten, the composer of “Les Illuminations op. 18” was born in Britain to be a composer, conductor and pianist. He left a large number of works in a huge range including vocal music, orchestral music, stage music, choral, ballet, and film music. His activity in the the Aldeburgh Festival and the foundation of the British Opera Group were also memorable. Britten was the British composer at the peak of music history after Purcell’s prosperity. In this study, Britten’s life, the music he encountered, and His famous works have been his acquaintances were looked into. studied as well. In this study of vocal music, which was Britten’s particularly talented composition area, the author studied his skills . Besides, the traditional features which Britten, as an eclectic composer, chose and applied to his music were also included. Britten’s musical methods are founded in “Les Illuminations Op.18” which was composed to the text of a French poet, Arthur Rimbaud, in 1939. This song cycle is generally centered on the Lydian mode. In this song cycle, the music is closely related to the text, and every song has much to do with the others in tonality, figure, motive, and so on. “Les Illuminations” is written with the text in French. The ambiguity of the language and Rimbaud's authentic images like ecstasy and obscurity were expressed through conflict of chords, multi-meters, modified rhythms, and chromatic scales. In addition, the string accompaniment emphasizes the dramatic atmosphere. However, Britten still remains within the traditional composition techniques with this song cycle. By analyzing the scores of and the literature regarding Britten’s “Les Illuminations”, this study shows the way he synthesized various characteristics in his music.
