John Woods Duke의 연가곡 "Six Poems by Emily Dickinson"에 관한 연구

Abstract

The activity of John Woods Duke (1899~1984) was varied, as a 20th century composer, pianist, and educator. Though he worked mainly as a pianist, his fame as a composer of American art songs was great as well. There are 265 songs, which range from neo-classical music to the use of the twelve-tone scale in terms of style. But each song has the simple and romantic vocal line of John Duke's typical style. In this study, the author examines his "Six poems by Emily Dickinson" , one of his fourteen song cycles. The study is centered on the texts, style, melody, tonality, rhythm, and harmony. Written to the texts of Emily Dickinson (1830~1886), an American female poet, these songs describe enthusiasm for life, fear and sorrow at death, as well as episodes and the world of nature. As a whole, this song cycle is of simple character in melody and tonality. While this song cycle keeps a consistent tonality, there are a number of modulations in this cycle in order to express the texts. In addition, in terms of rhythm, it uses multi-meters to make syncopation effects, and often makes changes to express the poetic ideal in both the vocal line and the piano, which show many characteristics of American music.;John Woods Duke(1899∼1984)는 20세기 미국의 작곡가이자 피아니스트이며 교육자로서 활동하였다. 주로 피아니스트로서 활약하였지만 미국 예술 가곡의 작곡가로서의 명성 또한 높았다. 그의 예술 가곡은 총 265곡이다. 이 곡들은 형식면에서 신고전주의에서 12음기법에 이르기까지 다양하지만 Duke만의 낭만적이고 단순한 성악 선율은 그의 가곡 전반에 흐르고 있다. 본 논문은 그의 14개의 연가곡 중 '에밀리 디킨슨에 의한 6개의 시(Six Poems by Emily Dickinson)'를 연구 분석한 것으로 시의 내용 해석, 곡의 형식과 조성, 화성, 리듬, 선율의 특징을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 이 연가곡은 1968년에 미국의 여류 시인 Emily Dickinson(1830∼1886)의 시에 곡을 부친 작품으로 Dickinson의 삶에 대한 열의, 죽음에 대한 두려움, 슬픔을 다루는 반면 자연 세계의 창조물들과 사건에 대해 묘사하고 있다. 이 연가곡의 전체적인 특징을 살펴보면 곡의 구조에 있어서는 대부분 뚜렷한 형식을 갖추고 있고, 선율과 조성면에 있어서는 서정적이고 단순하며 아름다운 성악 선율이 주를 이루고 있으며, 일관된 조성을 고수하는 반면 시의 내용을 표현하기 위해 전조가 많이 나타나는 것을 볼 수 있다. 그리고 리듬에 있어서는 당김음 구조를 만들어 내기 위해 복합 박자를 사용하는 등 피아노나 성악 선율 모두가 특정한 시적 이상을 표현하기 위해 잦은 리듬의 변화를 주어 미국적인 음악적 특징을 잘 나타내고 있다.
