Francis Poulenc의 "Napoli Suite"에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 필자의 석사과정 졸업 연주 프로그램 중 하나인 Francis Poulenc(1899-1963)의 <Napoli Suite>에 관하여 연구한 것이다. 음악사적 입장에서 Poulenc은 제2차 세계대전 후 파리에서의 새로운 음악경향을 대표하는 Les six의 일원으로서 신고전주의적 특성을 지녔다. 그는 피아노곡, 관현악곡, 실내악곡, 오페라 작품 등 150여곡을 작곡하였으며 대부분의 곡들은 길지 않은 character piece들이다. 미국의 음악학자인 K.W. Daniel은 Poulenc의 전체적인 작품양식을 "야수파의 시기(1917-1922)", "신고전주의의 시기(1923-1935), "로맨티시즘의 시기(1936-1952)", "경건함의 시기(1953-1963)"의 4기로 나누었으며, 피아노 작품은 "로맨티시즘의 시기"와 "경건함의 시기"를 합하여 3기로 나누었다. Poulenc의 피아노 작품들의 음악사적 경향은 신고전주의적인 점이 가장 많이 드러나는데, 화성과 리듬에서는 현대음악의 경향이 두드러지게 나타나고 형식과 구성은 고전 음악의 경향이 많이 나타난다. <Napoli Suite>은 제2기인 "신고전주의의 시기"에 속하는 작품으로, Alfredo Casella를 만나기 위하여 Napoli를 여행하던 중 작곡된 것이며 1922년에 1·2악장이 작곡되었고 1925년에 3악장이 완성됨으로써 1926년에 초연되었다. 제1악장 Barcarolle에는 왼손의 ostinato 반주위에 오른손 주제가 순차적으로 하행하는 B-F^(#) 까지의 4도 음정이 주체가 되는 3부분 형식이고, 제2 악장인 Nocturne도 긴 pedal point위에 선율이 재현되는 3부분 형식의 곡이다. 3악장 Caprice Italien은 tarantella, serenade, waltz, march가 주축을 이루는 다양하고 자유스러운 악장이다. 그 중의 serenade에서는 프랑스 대중음악인 샹송을 주제로 사용한 점이 특이하다. 전체적으로 이 곡은 4도관계 음정을 많이 사용하였으며 잦은 전조, 불협화음 등의 현대적인 기법을 많이 사용하였으며, 동형진행, ostinato가 많이 나타나고 있음으로 보아 신고전주의적인 특성을 그대로 보여준다. 3곡 모두 3부분형식의 단순구조 안에서 리듬의 다양성을 추구하였고, 제3악장에서는 다양한 음색과 넓은 음역으로 낭만적인 성향을 보여준다. 또한 이 곡에서는 Poulenc 스스로 실제적이고 구체적인 나타냄말들을 많이 사용하였다. 우리나라에서도 프랑스 음악에 대한 관심이 커져가는 이때에, 프랑스 현대음악에 지대한 영향을 미친 Poulenc의 음악을 구체적으로 연구해보는 것은 매우 의미있는 일이라고 생각되며, 본 논문에서는 Poulenc의 생애, 음악적 특정들과 함께 <Napoli Suite>에 대하여 형식, 조성 및 화성, 선율, 리듬 등을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다.;In the early 20th century a new attitude came into being in musical circles in France. One aspect of this can be seen in the formation of 'Les Six'. A group of young composers, 'Les Six' which was against the Impressionism of Debussy and the late Romanticism. Poulenc was a member of this group. Light music from the cafe, the music hall and the small salon became the composition ideals of these composers. Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) could be considered the most influential among the composers representing this new musical trend.. - He composed about 150 works, including piano music, orchestral music, opera, and vocal music. Most of his works are known as character pieces. Poulenc was considered a neo-classical composer, so he combined 0th classical factors of form and structure, and modern factors of harmony and rhythm, According to K.W. Daniel who classified the characteristics of Poulenc's works into four styles, "Napoli Suite" falls into the second category. Poulenc composed this suite during his trip to Naples in order to meet the Italian composes, Alfredo Casella. In 1922, the first and the second movements were composed and the third movement in 1925. The first movement, Barcarolle, is in three-part form (ABA'). The motive is based on the descending fourth interval (B to F^(#)). The second movement, Nocturne, also consists of three parts (ABA') with a long pedal point. Caprice Italien is the third movement which has various motives and many special factors like tarantella, serenade, waltz, and march. This piece is also in three-part form (ABC). Poulenc used as one of the subjects a chanson which was the French popular music of the time in the serenade section. "Napoli Suite" is of simple tripartite form characterized by short phrases, definite outline, and lyrical melodies. Repetition of the same melody and additional appearances of new melodies are seen and the typical characteristics of neo-classicism such as the use of ostinatos, sequences, and dissonant chords are also detected in this work. Poulenc sought after frequent modulations, and a variety of the rhythms in the simple three-part forms of "Napoli Suite". He also used many concrete directions in this work which were influenced by Satie's works. It may be a meaningful achievement that by studying such works as "Napoli Suite" by Poulenc at this time, 20th century French music may become the center of public interest in Korean musical circles.
