Abstract
Passacaglia and Fugue on B-A-C-H, Op.150을 분석하였다. Describing the historical circumstances of Sigfrid Karg-Elert(1877-1933) and Organ Reform Movement (Orgelbewegung), this thesis made researches on his life and the features of his works, and analyzed his last masterpiece Passacaglia and Fugue on B-A-C-H, Op.150. This study aims at a full understanding of german organ music in the 20th century and the organ music of Karg-Elert in particular, through the analysis of Passaazglia and Fugue on B-A-C-H, Op.150. German organ music in the 20th century was under the influence of Max Reger (1873-1916). and through imitating and modifying his style, many composers, including Karg-Elert, developed it. In addition, german organ music met with an important turning point through the Organ Reform Movement (Orgelblewegung). First, getting rid of unconditionally romantic performance, it contains the selection of the right stops according to the organ manufacturing principles and musical understanding of that period, and peiformance following the original purpose of the composer. Secondly, there was a restoration of interest in and attention to Baroque music. It also provided the motivation to add a large amount of protestant liturgical music. Whereas many tendencies existed together and organ music was declining due to the flourishing of piano music and the emphasis on secularism, Karg-Elert left many works of organ music, about 250 in number. The form of his works includes traditional style influenced by the Neo-Baroque, while harmonically his works were affected by French Impressionism. Differently from his previous works where simple harmony, strong key-tendency, and historical contrapunctal technique prevail, his Passuazglia and Fugue on B-A-C-H, Op.150 shows a developed musical pattern by widely using harmony exemplifying extreme chromaticism, polytonality, and modem harmony the representative style of the Baroque period in 17th century, namely, Passacaglia and Fugue. Especially, it shows the use of hidden twelve-tone technique, which reveals that he had accepted the leading pattern of that time in his late years. In conclusion, through this work of art, Karg-Elert achieved a successful combination of the traditional style and the new expression of music.
