Abstract

This thesis examines the subject of religion in the poetry of Robert Frost. The poet's attitude toward religion is inconsistent, perhaps reflecting the uncertainty of people in this age. He doesn't seem to have a firm system of religious belief, nor does he present any consistent answers about immortalities. He makes answers sometimes from the viewpoint of religion and sometimes from that of agnosticism. Traditional religious poetry accommodates the viewpoint of a universe which is controlled by God. God in this context is sometimes merciless, or benevolent in other times. And man is described as a fallen being but allowed to be delivered. In poetry which implies the existence of God, the poet deals with the loneliness, and alienation which man feels in nature, as well as the uncertainty or fear which man must cope with. In the poetry of looking at the existence of Cod skeptically, on the other hand, man as a momentary and transient being who tries to escape meaninglessness. In these poems the finiteness of life is emphasized, as well as the uncertainty of religion and accordingly the deficiency of perception toward the world. The poet tries to search for the meaning of life to see the transiency or nihilism which is felt in nature that is continuously changing, as in the seasonal and daily cycles of death and rebirth. In one way, the poet tries to take a journey toward heaven by leaving the earth momentarily in order to get deliverance from the suffering in reality. But he begins a new life by returning to the Earth. He realizes the fact that he has to try to overcome and accept suffering in this life through these processes. Frost wished to create a world of eternity through the visible and incomplete life on Earth, although life on Earth cannot be proved immortal in reality. All existence in this world belongs to the stream of moments named eternity. For Frost, the change of existence is connected with the stream of moments. Also, he thought that world on Earth and world in heaven are not separate from each other, but the pleasure in heaven should be found on earth. Thus, he tried to see the immortality in life on Earth. man searching for a new life on earth accepts suffering in reality, and he realizes that he must struggle to overcome for himself through this process. The place man can be delivered is not the mythical concept of heaven but the world on Earth. So man must take pleasure, happiness and love here on Earth instead of in heaven. Deliverance which the poet desired must be to love the Earth, to overcome challenges which is given to him, and practice a faithful life.;Robert Frost가 시에서 보여준 종교에 대한 태도는 현대인의 불안감을 반영하는 듯 종종 모순적이다. 그는 종교적 믿음에 대한 고정된 체계를 갖거나 일관성 있는 해답을 제시하지는 않는다. 불멸성에 관한 문제에 대해 때로는 종교적 관점으로, 때로는 불가지론적 관점으로 각기 다른 답변을 한다. 전통적 종교시는 절대자에게 통제를 받는 우주관을 수반한다. 여기에서의 절대자는 가혹할 수도 있고, 자비로운 존재이기도 하며, 인간은 타락한 존재지만 구원이 허락된 존재로 그려진다. 절대자의 존재를 느낄 수 있는 시들에서 시인은 가혹한 절대자 앞의 인간이 자연 속에서 느끼는 고독이나 소외감, 인간이 감당해야 하는 불안과 공포감 등을 다룬다. 절대자의 존재를 회의적으로 보는 시에서 일시적, 순간적 존재로서의 인간은 무의미한 상태를 벗어나기 위한 시도를 한다. 주로 이러한 성격을 보여주는 시들은 현재 삶의 유한성, 종교의 불확실성, 그리고 그로 인한 세상에 대한 인식의 부족을 보여주기도 한다. 끊임없이 변화하고 생성과 소멸을 반복하는 자연 속에서 느끼는 무상함이나 허무의식은 시인으로 하여금 인생의 의미를 찾기 위한 노력을 하게 한다. 때로 시인은 현실의 고통에서 벗어나 구원을 얻기 위한 방안으로 잠시 지상을 떠나 천상으로의 여행을 시도하기도 하지만, 지상으로 돌아와 새로운 삶을 시작한다. 이러한 과정에서 현실의 고통을 수용하고 극복의 노력을 해야 함을 깨닫는다. 또한 실제로 불멸을 증명할 수 없음에도 불구하고, 가시적이고 부분적이라 할 수 있는 현재의 삶을 통해 Frost는 불멸의 세계를 창조하려 하였다. Frost에게 현실의 모든 존재는 영원이라는 시간의 흐름에 속하는 것으로, 존재의 변화는 영원한 시간의 흐름과 이어질. 수 있다. 또한 지상의 세계와 천상의 세계는 서로 별개의 것이 아니라, 지상에서 천상의 유희를 찾아야 한다고 느꼈다. 그러므로 시인은 현실의 삶에서 불멸을 보고자 하였다. 지상에서 새로운 삶을 추구하는 모습으로서의 인간은 현실의 고통을 수용하는 것이며, 여기에서 인간은 극복을 위한 투쟁을 해야 하는 것이다. 인간이 구제 받을 수 있는 곳은 불가능의 천국이라기보다는 지상의 세계이다. 그러므로 인간은 천국이 아닌 지상에서 사랑과 행복을 누려야 한다. 땅을 사랑하고, 스스로에게 주어진 도전을 극복하고, 성실한 합의 실천이 시인이 바랬던 구원일 것이다.
