Abstract

This thesis is the analysis of Knoxville : Summer of 1915. op. 14(1947)· by Samuel Barber, one of the great composers in twentieth centry America. Barber is categorized as a neo-romantic composer. He kept a traditional and conservative trend based on romanticism and also united twentieth centry modem forms with this trend. Accordingly, as his works are not only lyrical and easy to understand but also new and unique, they have appealed both to performers and to audiences and have been performed frequently. Barber was a composer and baritone singer, who had the ability to understand both singers and songs. Now he is regarded as one of the musicians who have developed the modern American art song. Barber's lyricisim is well expressed in about 40 songs. When he composed these songs, he prudently chose the words using the poem as the base of each work. Knoxville : Summer of 1915 is one of the best works with coincidence of words and composition. Here, directly and intensively, Barber recreated the very emotion that James Agee created in 「A Death in the Family」's prologue. As this work was composed in Barber's mature period, all of his musical techniques were unified in this composition. This study is aimed at researching Barber's specific techniques by analyzing the forms, melody, structure, rhythm and harmony of the work.;본 논문은 현대 미국음악을 대표하는 주요 작곡가의 한 사람인 Samuel Barber (1910-1981)의 Knoxville : Summer of 1915, op.24 (1947)에 관한 연구이다. Barber늘 일반적으로 신낭만주의(neo-romantic)계열의 작곡가로 분류되어지고 있다. 그의 음악은 낭만주의에 기초하여 전통적이고 다소 보수적인 경향을 유지하면서 그 안에 20세기의 새로운 양식을 적절히 융합하고 있다. 따라서 그의 음악은 서정적이고 이해하기 쉬우면서도 새롭고 독특하여 연주자와 청중 모두에게 큰 호응을 얻고있으며, 그의 작품은 오늘날 미국에서 연주되는 몇 안되는 미국 출신작곡가의 작품들 중의 하나이다. 작곡가이자 그 자신이 bariton가수였던 Barber는 성악가와 성악작품에 대한 이해가 뛰어나 미국 현대가곡발전에 핵심적인 인물로 평가되고 있다. 40여곡에 달하는 가곡은 Barber가 자신의 음악적 서정성을 가장 잘 표현할 수있었던 분야로 그의 모든 작품들중에서도 가장 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 문학적 조예가 깊었던 그는 가곡을 작곡함에 있어 가사선택에 매우 신중을 기했으며, 음악을 만드는 데 있어 가사를 가장 근본적인 기준으로 삼고 있다. 본 논문의 연구대상인 Knoxville : Summer of 1915 은 가사와 음악의 완벽한 일치에 있어 미국 최고의 명작중 하나로 손꼽히는 작품이다. Barber는 작품의 가사로 사용된 소설 『A Death in the Family』 의 prologue에서 느낀 작가 James Agee와의 동일한 정서를 음악을 통해 직접적이고 아주 강렬하게 재창조해 내고 있다. 특히, 이 작품은 Barber의 원숙한 작곡시기에 만들어져 그의 모든 음악적 양식이 집약된 작품으로, 본 논문에서는 작품안에서 사용된 Barber의 전형적인 형식, 선율, 조성, 리듬, 화성의 분석을 통해 그의 독특한 음악양식에 대해 연구해 보았다.
