Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to perform an in depth analysis on rules at a child care center. Therefore I analyzed the different kinds of regulations, characteristics of rules and functions of rules with an ethnographic method. Detailed issues are as follows: 1. What kinds of rules does Mujigea class at Hanul daycare center have? 2. How do rules work on Mujigea class at Hanul daycare center? 3. What are the functions of rules at Mujigea class at Hanul daycare center? Research was performed at Mujigea class at Hanul daycare center, which is located at W-ku in Seoul. Twenty-six children who were 5 years old and two teachers were subjects of this research. I implemented formal interviews with teacher for three times and an informal interview with teachers and children from August 7th, 2006 to September 25th, 2006. I collected data from a field jotting, recording, documentation and photographing. A field jotting and recording data were reconstructed by a transcription. Data were coded and categorized according to the method that Bogdan and Biklen (2006) suggested. Results of this research are as follows: Firstly, ordering, not doing dangerous behaviors, taking turns, keeping quiet, being punctual and staying in one's seat were repeatedly and commonly observed in the class. ‘Ordering' was voluntarily practiced at any finishing stage. Teachers and children considered ‘not doing dangerous behaviors' as a most important rule. ‘Taking turns' was expressed as a waiting-in-line. ‘Keeping quiet' has a purpose of not disturbing others when children are eating, resting and playing in public area. ‘Being punctual' helps children to be stable and control their needs. ‘Staying in one's seat' is that children should be at certain location in certain time, which is used as a way to control children. Second, I was able to figure out that rules in class were applied to two distinctive categories : absolute ones and relative ones. First, absoluteness of rules is applied to prevent accidents and protect justice of society. In class, they stressed it as an ‘absolute rule'. Relativity of rules was applied with daily routine according to children's development level, personal demand and educational necessity. When children play together, they applied rules with flexibility considering each child's development level. Teachers also tried to consider development level of every child when they operated rules. Moreover, flexible rules were enforced since priority was placed on personal interest and physical need of children. Especially, numbers and degree of rules were decreased in all-day classes compared with half-day morning classes. Third, rules in the class have functions such as ‘safety indicator', ‘public morality', ‘mutual consideration' and ‘assisting the teacher'. Rules provide a guideline for safety and play a role for public morality, which is necessary in community activity. Moreover, children can learn how to care for each other and protect their rights from unfair authority and situations. Lastly, rules work as a leader that helps teachers control children to keep rules volunteerly.
