A Special Report on English Study Abroad in East Asia

Abstract

미국, 호주, 캐나다, 뉴질랜드 등 영어사용 국가로 어학연수 목적으로 떠나는 학생들이 점점 증가하고 있다. 이러한 사실은 한국신문뿐만 아니라 한국 영자 신문에 보도 된 바 있는 반면 현재 한국에 불고 있는 동아시아로의 어학연수에 관한 자료는 보도 된 바가 없다. 그러므로 본 논문은 아직 보도 된 바 없는 동아시아로의 어학연수에 대한 기사를 폭 넓게 독자들에게 제공하고자 한다. 본 논문은 focus style 형식으로 4개의 신문 기사와 하나의 잡지기사로 이루어져 있다. 4개의 신문기사는 profile, explanatory story, business story 와 profile and explanatory 기법을 사용했다. 본 논문의 전반부는 논문의 작성법에 대해 기술하였으며 본 논문의 연구 목적과 배경, 정보 수집 방법론, 주제에 대한 연구, 장르에 대한 기술 연구을 포함하고있다.;The purpose of this project is to explore the under-reported topic of English study abroad in East Asia, and to provide complete and accurate information to a broad audience with news articles profiling students in such studies and reporting on the trend. Numerous news stories on language study abroad in America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have been featured in many different newspapers, not only in the Korean media but also in the English newpapers in Korea as well. However, none have featured the current trend on East Asia. This M.A. thesis project consists of a series of four feature stories, a profile, an explanatory story, business story, and story combining profile and explanatory technique based on a focus style and one magazine story. The thesis is prefaced with a theoretical paper discussing an investigative approach to feature story writing which includes the background and purpose of the study, methodology for gathering information, consideration of subject matter, and technical consideration of genre.
