William Faulkner의 Absalom, Absalom! 에 나타난 서술기법 연구

Abstract

This paper aims at understanding why William Faulkner used new technique and exploring what can be learned from his narrative style. His life mainly belongs to the South of America in the former part of the twentieth century. No one is free from her spatio-temporal limits, and to a large degree, its product. Corresponding to the turn of the century, part of the intellectuals got doubtful on what they had received and what they regarded as authoritative. Thus, there were many experiments in various fields. William Faulkner's novels reflect such a spirit. He diagnosed human's position in the modern world through the sufferings and collapse of the stable and traditional South. One cannot return to the past, but she must do something beyond nostalgia. As a way to convey the problems in new conditions and to seek a proper meaning in them, Faulkner found new narrative technique. In all of his novels from 1929 onwards, Faulkner used multiple perspectives and interior monologues. Those techniques call our attnetion to the complexity of truth and reality. Absalom, Absalom! (1936) is one of the best examples of Faulkner's narrative technique. Each of Four character-narrators, Quentin, Shreve, Rosa and Mr. Compson, tells about Thomas Sutpen's story from different vantage points. There is no single, or previleged way to approach 'reality' or 'truth.' Reality is a relational concept. Each character deals with the effects of reality. Each of them has her own 'design' to say the Sutpen story as a narrator and a character. Their design also is working in the framework of Faulkner's narrative design. They achieved their aims more or less what it was by doing narration. Since Faulkner doesn't use a straight explanation, the reader is allowed and forced to participate in the story, that is, to be a narrator. In the process of reconstructing what happened out of characters' narratives and their relationships, the reader learns the meaning of the novel. So the reader has her own 'design' to understand Absalom. Absalom!.;본 논문은 William Faulkner의 서술기법을 연구하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 그가 왜 자신의 소설 속에서 다양한 형식을 가지고 실험했나를 알기 위해서는 먼저 20세기 초의 모더니즘의 기운에 대해서 알아 보아야만 한다. 서구사회는 강력한 종교적 힘에서 나온 통일성의 시기인 19세기에서 변화와 다양성을 추구하는 20세기로 넘어오자, 학문과 사상적으로 많은 변화가 있었다. 많은 사상가들이 안전하게 받아들여졌던 고착된 사상과 관습이 사라지고, 새로운 실험들이 행해질 것이라고 예견했다. 그 새로운 실험은 문학, 특히 소설 분야에서 두드러졌는데, 20세기 초에 등장한 실험적 소설들은 많은 작가들이 세상에 대해서 이야기할 때 자신의 소설에 그 전의 관습을 적용시키는데 실패했음을 의미한다. 따라서 그들은 새롭게 이야기할 방법을 찾을 필요를 느낀 것이다. 특히 William Faulkner는 남부를 배경으로, 미국의 전통적 남부사회의 몰락과 붕괴를 20세기 현대인의 정신적 불모와 붕괴로 확대하고 있다. 그는 복잡한 현대사회의 문제들을 표현하는 방법으로서 복잡한 실험적 서술기법을 사용한 것이다. 따라서 Faulkner 소설의 주제는 그의 기법을 떠나서는 생각할 수 없다. Faulkner는 전 현대사회와 인류가 겪는 보편타당한 문제들을 보여줄때, 작중인물의 의식세계를 통해 직접 형상화하는 기법을 즐겨 사용한다. 이것이 바로 여러 명의 다양한 작중인물인 화자들을 통해 이야기해나가는 그의 서술기법이다. 1929년 부터 1936년에 걸친 7년 동안 Faulkner는 자신의 소설들 속에서 가장 혁신적인 실험들을 많이 행했는데, 그 대표적인 작품이 Absalom, Absalom!(1936)이다. 이 소설에서 그는 다양한 화자들을 통한 복수적 관점과 내면독백을 효과적으로 사용함으로써, 진실이나 실재라는 것이 얼마나 포착되기가 어려운가를 보여준다. Quentin, Shreve, Rosa, 그리고 Mr. Compson의 네명의 화자들은 각각의 관심과 편견에 따라 각기 다른 시각으로 Thomas Sutpen에 관한 이야기를 한다. 그들이 하는 이야기는 궁극적 진실이라고 볼 수도 없지만, 또한 완전히 틀린 해석이라고 볼 수도 없다. 그들의 다양한 해석은 하나의 현상을 보는 다양한 관점일 뿐이다. 이것은 실재란 너무 복잡하고 다면적이어서 단일한 시각으로는 파악될 수 없다는 Faulkner의 관심을 보여주는 것이다. 그런데 각 화자들은 자기 나름대로 Sutpen에 관한 이야기를 서술하는데 있어서 목적이나 계획이 있다. 또한 Absalom, Absalom! 이라는 소설의 전체의 의미를 다양한 화자들의 이야기라는 방법으로 드러내는 작가의 커다란 서술계획이 있다. 따라서 독자는 각 화자들의 서술계획을 통해 나온 여러가지 해석들 중에서 가장 진실같은 것을 골라 자기 나름대로 재구성해서 새로운 해석으로 만들어내야 한다. 그러므로 소설 속에서 궁긍적으로 말하는 목소리는 독자의 것이며, 독자의 관심속에 있는 것이다. 독자는 양식있고 능력있는 최후의 화자로서 작가가 소설 속에서 의미하는 것이 무엇인지를 파악해야 한다. 이러한 독자의 적극적이고 능동적인 참여의 요구가 Faulkner 소설의 서술기법상의 현대성을 상징하는 것이다.
