Aaron Copland의「Piano Variations」에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 20세기 미국의 대표적인 작곡가 아론 코플랜드(Aaron Copland, 1900~1990)의 「피아노 변주곡, (Piano Variations, 1930)」을 연구·분석함으로써 그의 작곡 양식과 기법 및 피아노 음악의 특징을 살펴보아 그의 작품을 이해·감상하고 연주하는데 도움이 되게 하고자 한다. 코플랜드는 미국을 대표하는 작곡가로서 작곡 활동을 활발히 했을 뿐만 아니라 20세기 음악에 대한 많은 강의와 저서를 통해 미국의 현대 음악에 많은 영향을 끼쳤으며 독창적이고 개성 있는 미국적인 경향의 음악을 만들어 낸 작곡가이다. 그는 작곡가와 청중 사이의 거리를 좁히기 위해 영화 음악, 발레 음악, 극음악, 오페라 등 실용 음악을 많이 작곡하였고, 재즈 양식과 미국 및 라틴 아메리카의 민속적 요소를 자신의 음악에 적용시켜 미국적인 음악을 만들어 내는데 공헌했다. 그의 작품은 한 가지 양식으로 일관되어 있지 않고 시기별로 특징과 변화에 따라 스트라빈스키와 재즈의 영향을 많이 받은 프렌치 - 재즈시기, 엄격하고 구성적인 양식을 보여주는 추상음악 시기, 재즈와 민속적 요소를 이용하고 실용음악에 관심을 가진 민속음악 시기, 쇤베르크의 영향을 받은 음렬주의 시기의 4시기로 나눌 수 있다. 그 중 제 2기에 속하는 피아노 변주곡은 단순하면서도 명확한 동기가 전곡에 걸쳐 변형·반복되면서 발전되는 작품으로, 뚜렷한 형식을 갖는 것이 특징이다. 주제와 20개의 변주곡과 코다로 이루어진 이 곡은 에피소드적인 요소가 없고 전체가 쉼 없이 연주된다. 처음 주제의 동기 4개의 음 E - C - D^(#)- C^(#)이 전곡을 통해서 변형·반복되면서 발전한다. 분명한 형식 구조, 불규칙적인 박자와 리듬, 복조성, 재즈 리듬이 그 자신만의 독특한 어법으로 특징적으로 나타나는 이 곡은 미국 피아노 음악의 발전에 큰 역할을 하였다.;The purpose of this study was to analyze 「Piano Variations, 1930」composed by Aaron Copland(1900~1990) who represented the music of the United States in order to determine his composing methods, techniques and characteristics of his piano music to help understand, appreciate and perform his works better. Copland was active enough in compositions of music to represent the United States, while affecting the US modern music through numerous instructions and books, and he created an original and unique US style music. In order to narrow the gap between composers and audience, he attempted to write numerous practical music works for films, ballet, drama and opera, and furthermore, he introduced into his music the jazz mode, US and Latin American folklore elements only to contribute to development of the US style music. His works were not consistent in terms of forms, but diversified over time. His life as composer may be divided into 4 periods: period of the French jazz music influenced much by Stravinsky and jazz, period of the abstract music showing a stern and constructionism mode, period of the folklore music using jazz and folklore elements with high concern about the practical music, and period of the serialism music affected much by Schoenberg. His piano variations belonging to the second period were evolving with the simple and apparent motif varying and repeated throughout the whole piece as well as in a clear form. This piece consisting of a theme, 20 variations and coda has no episodic element, and it can be performed without interruptions. The 4 notes of the first thematic motif or 'E - C - D^(#) - C^(#)' evolve throughout the entire piece, being varied and repeated. This piece characterized by structure of a clear form, irregular beats and rhythms, modulations and jazz rhythm, all of which evolve in his own unique way, would conduce greatly to development of the US piano music.
