Ned Rorem의 「 Four Poems of Tennyson 」연구

Abstract

네드 로렘(Ned Rorem 1923- )은 현존하는 미국의 대표적인 현대 작곡가이다. 가곡, 합창곡, 오페라, 피아노곡, 기악곡, 실내악, 교향곡, 관현악곡, 발레음악, 연극 음악 등 여러 장르의 음악을 작곡하였다. 그 중에서 관현악곡인“Overture in C"와 "Air Music"으로 각각 1948년 거쉰상, 1976년 퓰리처 상을 수상하여 그의 뛰어난 음악적 재능을 인정받았다. 그러나 무엇보다도 로렘은 가곡 장르를 섭렵한 첫 번째 미국 작곡가로 많은 사람들에 의해 미국 가곡 작곡가들의 선두에 있다고 여기질 만큼 뛰어난 가곡을 많이 작곡한 현대 미국 예술 가곡에 있어서 매우 중요한 작곡가이다. 또한 로렘은 수필가이자 음악 평론가로, 다양한 저술 활동을 통해 음악에 대한 그의 생각과 자신의 삶, 비평, 현대 사회와 예술에 관한 독특한 소견 등 여러 가지 주제들에 대해 진솔하게 이야기 한다. 1967년에 발표된 "The Paris Diary"에서부터 1997년 "Dear Paul, Dear Ned"까지 14권의 저서는 감성적이며 섬세하고 우아한 필치로 세련됨이 돋보인다. 본 논문은 영국 시인 알프레드 테니슨(Alfred Tennyson, 1809-1892)의 시에 붙여진 네드 로렘의 연가곡「Four Poems of Tennyson」을 분석, 연구한 논문이다. 연구의 목적은「Four Poems of Tennyson」의 분석, 연구를 통해 로렘의 가곡 특징을 알아보고, 이 작품을 이해하고 연주하는 데에 도움을 주는 것이다. 더 나아가 우리나라에 비교적 잘 알려지지 않은 현대 미국 예술 가곡 역사에서 중요한 작곡가인 로렘을 소개하고자 이 주제를 택하였다. 본 논문의 구성은 다음과 같다. 우선 로렘의 생애와 그의 가곡에서 일반적으로 나타나는 음악적인 경향을 개괄하였다. 이러한 특징들이 시의 내용과 함께 어떻게 표현되었는지 작품 분석을 통해 연구하고, 결론에서 연구한 내용을 정리하여 이 작품에 대한 총체적인 설명으로 논문을 마무리 하였다. 「Four Poems of Tennyson」은 로렘의 많은 가곡 작품들 중 소프라노를 위한 연가곡으로서 자주 연주되어 지고 있는 작품으로 테니슨의 서정시를 우아하고 간결한 음악으로 표현하고 있다. 시에 대한 높은 관심으로 로렘은 가곡 작곡에 있어 시를 매우 중요한 요소로 생각하였기 때문에 작품의 여러 곳에서 시어의 언어적인 표현과 시에 대한 회화적인 표현을 찾아 볼 수 있다. 또한 이 작품은 로렘의 중기에 해당하는 1964년에 발표되었지만, 제1곡~제3곡을 제외한 제4곡은 초기에 해당하는 작품으로, 단순한 초기가곡의 특징을 가지고 있다. 그러나 나머지 세 작품들은 화성, 리듬, 시의 음악적 표현 등 음악적인 내용과 범위가 복잡해진 중기가곡의 특징을 가지고 있어 로렘의 음악이 어떻게 발전되었는지 보여준다.;This thesis analyzed and researched Ned Rorem's(1923- ) song cycle「Four Poems of Tennyson」. Through the background of Rorem's lifetime and musical characteristic, analyzed「Four Poems of Tennyson」and searched the characteristic of the song. Overall, each song is concise and has elegant lyricism. Melody or motive, special interval, basis on rhythm and repeat, imitates or uses sequence. So the whole song unites together. The form of the song uses ternary form and strophic form that divides distinctively. Lyrical and romantic vocal melody flows smoothly, sometimes appear as natural recitative. Sometimes shows 8 degree or 6 degree skiping and treble but normally inside one octave there's many step progression and 3 degree skiping that vocalist comparatively easy to perform. Piano part is not technical or complicated but simple that rather than independent role brings vocal music melody into relief. So performs same interval vocal melody or use imitation and canon technique that sometimes presents the atmosphere of the song. Maintains the Key and through the change of harmony expressed unusual tone. Through chromatic scale, gave the change in harmony. Partially uses bitonality and poly chord, make hollow tone as using incomplete 7th chord and 9th chord. Especially through the influence of French Impressionism, A Quartal chord is used a lot and shows a mode. To express the poem rhythm and the flow of talk, progressed syncopation a lot and often Irregular Time occurred. Sometimes used hemiola and polyrhythm but rhythm is not complicated that makes concise music. Poem's musical expression shows Rorem's sensitive reaction toward the poem. Various tempo change and expression of detailed intensity, use of mode, change of compass, emphasizing the use of poly chord, and through the use of tone painting made it to express the content of the poem. He not just made the music to reconsider the poem but through music purposed to strengthen the poem and composed the song. So not to express the content of the poem deep and discerning but to deliver the content of the poem directly. Like this through the study on his song cycle『 Four Poems of Tennyson 』, we could notice that Rorem was an excellent composer on the song field. Rorem's existing composer who represent and contributed to the 20th century American art song and still composing song. He not just follows the current of the time but through his musical language he built a music world. He was also an excellent writer, so he concentrated on composing the song rather than other genre and left superb result through composing almost 400 songs. Through the thesis, researcher could give a help to perform the song and hope this research helps to understand the music. Moreover through this research, hope Rorem's work perform actively in the country and continue studying on his work.
