Shakespeare의 as you like it에 나타난 제의적 전통(ritual tradition)의 수용과 변용

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 Shakespeare의 희극, As You Like It에 나타난 제의적 전통의 양상을 규명하는 것이다. As You Like It은 제의의 요소들을 수용하여 축제와 환상의 분위기를 극화하고 있지만, 여러 시각 (perspective)을 통하여 제시함으로써 그 요소들을 변용 시키고 있으며, 그 과정을 통하여 탁월한 극적 효과를 창출하고 있음을 알 수가 있다. 이와 같은 AYL의 성취는 극의 주무대인 아든 숲의 복합적인 특성에서 확인된다. 본론 1에서 살펴보았듯이, 아든 숲은 제의적 전통에서 유래한 것이지만, 제의적인 전통에서처럼 일상과 축제, 현실과 환상이라는 이분법으로 규정될 수 있는 공간은 아니다. 오히려 아든 숲은 제의적 전통의 이분법을 해체한 공간으로서 더욱 많은 의미를 내포하고 있으며, 이와 같은 전통적 공간 특성의 수용과 변용을 통하여, AYL은 고급 희극 (high comedy)의 경지로 그 완성도를 높이고 있는 것이다. 본론 2에서 살펴본 fool들 역시 수용과 변용을 거쳐 새로운 성격을 부여받고 있기는 마찬가지이다. fool은 전통적 제의의 중요한 요소이나, AYL의 fool은 제의 행사에서 보는 fool의 한 변종으로 이해할 만큼 그 성격과 역할이 달라지고 있는 것이다. 제의 행사의 fool들은 계급, 또는 자질의 접경적 특성 (liminality)으로 환상과 현실을 매개한다. 그러나, AYL의 Touchstone과 Jaques는 극중 인물들이 품고 있는 환상을 재평가, 혹은 비판한다. 이와 같은 fool의 역할로 해서, 극중에서 벌어지는 현실과 환상의 두 극단은 극적인 균형 속에 교차하게 된다. 이 때의 Touchstone과 Jaques는 이미 제의에서와 같은 단순한 fool이 아니다. 대신, AYL에서의 전형적인 fool의 역할은 여주인공인 Rosalind의 몫이다. 환상과 현실을 넘나드는 전통적인 fool의 역할이 Ganymede로 변장하고서, 다시 Ganymede로 Rosalind를 가장하는 Rosalind에게서 발견되는 것이다. 여기에서도 전통의 수용과 변용을 볼 수가 있는데, 그녀가 아든 숲에서 갖게 되는 자유로운 발언력은 극의 결말에서 화합을 이루지 못하고, 여전히 환상 속에 머물게 된다. 다시 말해 그녀가 극화 되어 가는 과정에서 다시 한번 각 단계의 요소들이 좀 더 복잡하게 중첩되어 나감을 확인한다. 결론적으로 As You Like It에서 Shakespeare는 제의적인 요소를 극화하지만, 동시에 이것을 변용 시키고 있다. As You Like It은 전통의 이러한 수용과 변용을 통해 축제 희극, 혹은 낭만희극으로서의 특성과, 이에 대한 풍자와 재평가라는 고급 희극 (high comedy)으로서의 요소를 모두 갖게 된다. 결국 두 가지 상반되는 요소를 동시에 극화해낼 수 있는 Shakespeare의 특성은 서로 다른 특징과 이해를 갖고 있는 다양한 관객층을 흡수하는 보편성으로 이어진다. 바로 이 점에서 작가의 탁월한 역량이 다시 한번 확인된다 할 것이다.;The purpose of this paper consists in an exploration of the ritual tradition embodied in Shakespeare's festive comedy, As You Like It. In Shakespeare's materialization of ritual tradition lies its uniqueness among the festive comedies which usually move "through release to clarification''. This general characterization of festive comedies, however, is not applicable in As You Like It's case for the realistic elements such as in the forest of Arden, fools and Rosalind runs counter to this tendency. My argument is that As You Like It can not be analyzed in terms of the movement of "release to clarification: as expound in both ritual and festive comedies and that it rejects a mere revelation of conventional happy ending and illusion, thus disagreeing with the conventional festive comedies. For this purpose, I first account for the affinity of ritual with drama that are found in Mummer's play and festive comedies. Then I analyze as to the regard, I first explain the realistic element in the forest of Arden where most of the action takes place, and secondly interprete fool's and Rosalind's function as a deconstructive force of illusion which festive comedies give. Accordingly, the first part of the paper concerns an explication of liminal phase of the forest of Arden. I contend in this part that various elements utilized in describing the Arden aims at creating a realistic place that is intended to destroy conventional place of festive comedies and in doing so, exposes audiences to "reality". The latter part of the paper concerns a reinterpretation of the functions of fools and Rosalind as characters who destroy an illusion of characters and the drama itself. I pay particular attention to the fools, such as Touchstone and Jaques. My argument, here, is that the function of Touchstone and Jaques is different from that of fools participating in Elizabethan calendary festivals. Before conclusion, I shed light on Rosalind's uniqueness in the movement of the play. By doing so I attempt at showing the experiences in Arden are reduced to the very point where they start. My conclusion consists in that the realistic element of ritual tradition in As You Like I t results from representing the close to life. Here lies As You Like It's uniqueness among festive comedies and Shakespeare's significant influences in modem art as easily discernible in Brecht.
