Abstract

부조리극이 나타나기 이전까지 극작품의 중요성은 그 내용과 형식의 두 가지 측면 중 주로 내용에 초점이 맞춰 논의되어왔다. 극의 내용은 채택되는 주제에 따라 다양하게 변화할 수 있었지만 그 형식은 고대 희랍극에서부터 유지되어오던 발단, 전개, (위기), 절정, 결말의 전개 방식을 벗어나지 못하면서 이렇다 할 특징을 갖고 있지 못했기 때문이다. 따라서 20세기에 부조리극의 등장은 무엇보다도 지금껏 개발되지 않았던 연극에 있어서 형식의 중요성을 일깨웠다는 점에서 그 의의가 크다. 부조리극은 기존 관습에 의한 극의 4단계, 또는 5단계의 전개 방식을 파기하고 부조리한 내용을 담아내기 위한 부조리한 형식을 취하면서 연극에서의 내용과 형식의 일치를 이루었던 것이다. 초창기에 부조리 극작가로 불리웠으나 이후에 그보다는 사회 비판작가로 인식되는 Edward Albee역시 이러한 연극의 형식을 그 내용 못지 않게 중요한 요소로 생각하면서 끊임없이 실험적 작품 활동을 해 온다. 그러나 연극 형식의 실험성은 그것이 주제 및 작가의 의도 등 작품을 이루는 다른 요소들과의 필연성을 갖지 못할 때에는 의미 있는 것이 되지 못한다. 따라서 본 논문은 이러한 Albee의 작품 중에서도 가장 실험적이라 평가받는 극 Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung(1968)을 그 연구 대상으로 삼아 극 형식이 작품의 전체적 의미를 형성하는 데에 역할하는 방법을 알아봄으로써 그 필연성을 밝힌다. Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung이 씌어진 1960년대 미국 사회는 자유와 민권 옹호를 위한 움직임이 활발하며 기성 권위에 대한 불신과 저항이 높아가는 사회적 격변의 시기였다. 이러한 사회 분위기에 발맞추어 연극계 역시 당대 사회 문제를 보다 효과적으로 표현하기 위한 많은 실험극들을 생산해 내게 된다. 작가가 그 서문에서 극작가의 사회적 의무를 규정하고 있는 Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung의 실험성도 이러한 60년대 극계에서 이루어졌던, 민감한 현실 반영을 위한 방법의 모색이라는 차원에서 이해되는 것이다. 빈 공간에 울려퍼지는 나레이션만으로 이루어진 Box는 그 황폐한 극적 상황이 내용이 제시하는 황폐한 현대 문명의 현실과 부합하면서 극이 주는 전반적 효과를 높이고 있다. 서로 아무런 관련이 없는 네 인물이 등장해 세 명은 저마다의 독백을 하고 한 명은 시종 침묵하는 Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung에서는 이 세 인물의 대사가 교묘히 분절, 병치되어 대화를 하고 있는 듯한 효과를 내면서 서로 소외되고 고립된 현대인이 그들의 고립된 세계에서 벗어나야 함을 촉구하는 인상을 준다. 또한 이처럼 서로 다른 두 극인 Box와 Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung이 Box-Quotations-Box의 순서로 연결됨으로써 주게 되는 전반적 극적 효과는 처음의 Box에 의해 현대 사회의 피폐상을 고발하고, Quotations에서 그 구체적 모습을 묘사하며, 나중의 Box에 의해 그 종말 상황을 암시함으로써 관객으로 하여금 작가가 서문에서 밝힌 사회 변화의 시급함을 깨닫게 하는 것이다. 중요한 것은 관객이 이러한 깨달음을 얻기까지는 이처럼 생소하고 때로는 혼란스러운 극을 이해하고자 하는 적극적 노력이 필요하다는 점이다. 그래서 작가는 서문에 극 경험에 적극적으로 참여하는 것을 관객의 의무로 규정한다. 이러한 노력을 기울이는 이들에게만 이 작품이 가지는 사회적 메시지는 의미있게 전달된다. 결국 이 작품의 극 형식은 그 의미의 이해를 위해 관객의 적극적 태도를 요구하면서 상당한 정도로 타락이 진행된 현대 사회를 변화시키기 위해서는 먼저 이 현실에의 능동적 참여가 있어야 함을 일깨우는 역할을 하고 있는 것이다.;To whatever genres it belongs, an artistic work can be understood through its two aspects; the form and the content. It is also true of a play. But in the long history of theatre, the meaning of a play has been thought to lie mainly in the content of that play rather than in the form. The emergence of the theatre of the Absurd is important in that it discovered the valuable role of a theatrical form. Edward Albee, who is a social critic rather than an Absurdist, is one of the playwrights who are fully aware of the importance of a theatrical form. Since he started as a playwright, he has continuoulsy experimented with the form of a play to produce better artistic effect. But experimental form is meaningful only when it is necessarily related with the content. Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung(l968) is said to be the most experimental of his works. So this thesis studies the form of this play to reveal the value and meaning which the form has in relation to the content of this play. This play is one of the products of 'New Theatre' movement in America in 1960s. In 196Os, when various social and political problems disillusioned the democritic ideal of the Americans, theatres were looking for a new form to present the current reality effectively. So the form of Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung can be assumed to be closely linked with the realization of that time on the part of the playwirght. Box, in which only disembodied voice describes the corruption of contemporary life, achieves the unity of the form and the content in that both gives the feeling of futility in artistic form, and in human life. Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung is composed of monologues of three characters and silence of one. Their monologues are, however, deliberately cut and juxtaposed to produce new meaning besides their own. By this juxtaposition technique, the playwright indirectly gives the message that the monologues of contemporary human beings must become conversation with others to overcome the futility of their lives. Two separate plays, Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung are also juxtaposed to warn the corruption of contemporary life by the former Box, to descibe the specific example of corruption by Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung, to preview the final stage of that corruption by later Box. To understand this meaning and grasp the message which the playwright tries to communicate through this play, audience's active participation in the theatrical experience is required. Without this effort to understand this play on the part of the audience, the theatrical experience of Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tunge is meaningless. Thus we can conclude that the playwright insinuates that to change the society, active participation in that reality is indispensible just as positive effort to understand is needed to make this play meaningful.
